High blood pressure does not cause glaucoma. It is unusual that xalatan alone would lower your IOP that much. Only your Eye Md that can look at your visual fields, corneal thickness, OCT, visual fields, gonioscopy, and optic nerve structure can tell you if your IOP is satisfactor or needs to be lowered by going to a stronger drop like Lumigan or Travatan Z or selective laser trabeculoplasty.
The retinal specialist gave 2 very strong drops to reduce the IOP. Subsequent to using the drops he went for a check for IOP and it was 15. Three weeks after continuously using the drops on his next checkup the IOP was back at 27.
The retinal specialist seemed to be a loss. He is now recommending a glaucoma specialist. We are not sure what to do.
I was diagnosed with glaucoma four years ago and was immediately put on Xalatan once a day both eyes. Two years later was taken off Xalatan and put on Cosopt & Alphagan, twice a day, Lumigan once a day, both eyes. For the past two years my diopter went from -4.00 both eyes, to -9.50 left eye, -7.00 right eye, as of today, in steady progression. I can already tell I'm probably not seeing 20/40 presently and need stronger contacts.
t check IOP at 30-45 minutes the way we used to because these drops are so effective.
If Glaucoma is caught very early, and the pressure (before treatment) is 18-19, is hoping for it to progress so slowly as to not lose visual function an unreasonable expectation?
The specifics are: 42 year old male, IOP (both eyes) 18-19 (treatment with Xalatan just begun). No field loss in left eye, very minor field loss in right eye.
I would like to know if I am suffering from chronic closed angle glaucoma ( I understand that open angle glaucoma is the more common form) and if so is the ache in the eyelids due to that? Or is it more possible that this is a symptom of dry eyes?
In addition, I have been using Xalatan for a week now. It seems to make my eyes itchy. The itchiness seems to be transient meaning it isn't persistent but fluctuates.
As a result, I was prescribed Xalatan by an Opthamologist. I took the drops for about a year, I stopped taking them after I lost my health insurance, and couldn't afford the prescription.
It's now years later, I'm doing well, vision hasn't changed (in my opinion). I've scheduled an appointment with an Opthamologist for next week. I'm nervous, is there a high likeliness that damaged has occurred?
Now for the second part of your question a laser trabeculoplasty will not lower the pressure 19-20 points but it is much less risky and much less expensive than a gel stent. PLEASE LIST WHAT EYE DROPS YOU ARE ON AND WHICH ONES YOU HAVE TRIED THAT DIDN'T WORK.
Also the decision to do laser first or gel stent depends on how much damage there is to your eye.
Lumigan is a glaucoma medication that is put directly on the eye. Latisse is the same medication, different packaging for eyelash growth and it is painted on the eyelashes with a brush.
I suppose the study that was completed 12/31/09 for growing eyelashes was only done on upper lid eyelashes.
Then that's all that the FDA will allow them to say.
Hair loss is not a problem with glaucoma drops and in fact one group of drops (prostaglandin antilogs-Xalatan, Lumigan, Travitan-Z) actually grown hair. About 70% of people on these medications exhibit thicker longer lashes. The makers of Lumigan recently started to market the very same drops under the name Latisse for eyelash growth. I understand that they also looked into using it as a treatment for baldness but its too expensive to cover a large area like the scalp.
