Valtrex dosing shingles

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosing shingles

valtrex

Avatar n tn t think the rash is going to be gone in 2 days so I am not sure if I would additional dosing of the Valtrex or if the 1 week was enough to alter the course. I am not sure what the protocol would be in that situation. The rash definitly hurts. It hurts to move, sleep, even the air from the fan causes pain. The skin next to the rash is sensitive to the touch and I actually have an on and off pain running down my leg. Not sure if this is normal, but hopefully it will pass.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Shingles on Monday. Although i had only one small red spot, I experienced three days of extremely intense back and uterine pain prior to my doctor visit. On Tuesday, a rash, wrapping around my middrift ,appeared. The pain intensified to the point of no return. (I suffered nerve damage from a botched angiogram in July/09, so I know pain well.) My question is: Would the Valtrex (antiviral) be ineffective because it was administered after the intense pain had begun?
Avatar n tn Actually Grace is spot on about the dosing; even on the GlaxoSmithKline Website (manufacturer of Valtrex), the correct dosing for the initial episode of genital herpes is 1 gram twice daily for 10 days. If your question is, can you get genital herpes via oral sex, the answer is very much yes. How were you diagnosed as having herpes? You didn't mention it.
Avatar f tn ll be one of the unlucky ones who has horrible outbreaks monthly or something. I had shingles once and it was not fun. I reacted badly to the Valtrex, so I fear getting HSV1 and then not being able to tolerate meds. All unlikely scenarios, I'm sure, just nagging "what if"s. To be honest, I'd love to forget the issue, accept the low risk and just have normal, unprotected oral and genital sex in the absence of symptoms - but I can't decide if that's crazy?
Avatar f tn Hi, having a positive swab for shingles you would need to have a separate blood test for shingles as its not hsv. Taking meds would not turn a positive into a negative.
Avatar m tn Since contracting HSV2 in August 2013, I have been in constant nerve pain in my butt, balls, left leg and now my left foot. I have been in this pain since I have been infected but with very limited OB's although it does ebb occasionally, but it's never gone. Since I haven't had any of this pain before August, I am attributing it to HSV2. Has anyone had a Shingles vaccine or thought of that. Would it help with the nerve pain? Aren't Shingles and HSV virtually the same.
233552 tn?1228319699 Aww I'm sorry. Its not all that uncommon to have outbreaks during pregnancy. However, shingles isn't an STD. Its a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, which is a member of the herpes family.
Avatar f tn I have HSV2 and have went on maintenance therapy about a month ago. Normally, one pill of valtrex would knock HSV2 dead in it's tracks. My skin down there is super sensitive to the touch where my underwear and pants rub it's almost unbearable. I've been taking 1000mg of Valtrex daily but it's not making a difference, I did have some sores down there a few weeks ago but there is nothing there but the pain is almost unbearable.
Avatar n tn Actually I'd be suspicious that what they called a shingles ob wasn't hsv2 to be honest. That's an area where genital herpes can occur in. Did they culture it or just give you a visual diagnosis of shingles? If you doubt your hsv2 score, get a herpes western blot sent off. http://depts.washington.edu/rspvirus/herpes.htm has the info you and your provider need to know for sending it.
Avatar n tn Was prescribed Valtrex for about 10 days. All this was taken cared of any shingles eliminated. My question is, would I be a good candidate to have the new vaccine for SHINGLES to prevent it happening again???? I am 74 year old female. Also, doctor, for the past month or so I have been feeling a slight pain on my right side below my rib cage. This pain is not too severe, but it is just an uncomfortable feeling. I have had bouts with I.B.S. causiing loose stools and diarrhea.
Avatar n tn My question is basically has anyone had shingles having hep C?? This is my 2nd time in 2 years.. It starts out like poison ivy.. then i find out out its shingles.. The itchy stuff.. They give u valtrex for it...I know its part of the chicken pox isue that lies dormant in ur body until ur immune system or something gets weak... Iam just curious has anyone experience this???
Avatar m tn Last Friday I woke up in excruciating pain, went to Doctor B) Family Practicioner - Couldnt get an appointment with a dermatologist. I did some research on dermatological conditions and and Shingles fit the description. Doctor B) didn't know what it was. He was perplexed. When I mentioned Shingles, he mentioned ok that is what I think it is. It kind of made sense.
Avatar n tn It is unusual to get zoster every month, especially if u r taking valtrex, Are u immunosuppressed eg taking steroids, chemotherapy or are u very run down?
Avatar f tn Keep in mind that Valtrex might upset your stomach, like it did with me. But, as Shingles is caused by a type of herpes virus, then it makes sense why the antiviral for herpes is used for the initial outbreak to nip it in the bud.
Avatar m tn It was on both sides of my body, especially on the entirety of my hands. I took another Valtrex and by this morning the shingles were all but gone. Could the herpes have triggered the shingles? Or could it have been a weird "last throes" outbreak of herpes? Or just a very strange coincidence? I am going soon to get a more accurate blood test.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed with shingles Wednesday night - went to doctor same day symptoms started as they were significant. Started Valtrex. Have bumps on lower back near sciatic nerve on left side and on left thigh following nerve line. Entire thigh dull to touch but high pain (throbbing, etc). Pain on site at back. Also high pain, burning on left hip, stomach, behind knee. Friday morning noticed third patch of bumps on thigh (more inward) and an increase of bumps on first set of thigh bumps.
Avatar m tn give your provider a call and ask them to call in the acyclovir instead. You take it more often but it works just as well. The cheaper generic price is far worth the pain of taking it more often. acyclovir is way cheaper than valtrex. did you have a recurrence of shingles that you are on medications again? if so, did they confirm that it's shingles with testing or were these just visual diagnosis of shingles?
Avatar f tn ve never had shingles before now. I went to the doctor today and got neurontin and valtrex, but the doctor told me to keep taking the Concerta. I don't know what to do because the Concerta is helping my ADD, but I also believe it at least played a part in my shingles outbreak.
Avatar n tn I am also 23 and I had shingles when I was 19. Its an adult form of the chicken pox and I know it hurts like hell. Unfortunately it will last for a month after you start your meds. You should see another doctor because if in fact you have shingles, it's a virus like the chicken pox, and antibotics won't do anything. You need a viral med. I was prescribed valtrex.
Avatar n tn Husband got a rash two months ago that did not ooze or hurt (just some light itching). Just before Thanksgiving his rheumatologist took a quick look and said it was shingles because of the pattern of the rash, and gave him Valtrex. The rash has not gone away, but has spread. It still does not hurt, so he thinks it is not shingles but has not gone to a dermatologist. ( finally agreed to try to make an appointment, but now can’t get one till after Christmas.
Avatar f tn The facial/head problem probably is herpes simplex (HSV-1), not shingles (herpes zoster). Shingles rarely if ever recurs with the frequency you describe. If your recurrent rash is due to any kind of herpes -- and I believe that it is -- more likely it is herpes simplex, i.e. an HSV-1 infection. The vast majority of HSV-1 infections of the facial area are non-sexually acquired. Therefore, your sexual orientation and the lack of sexual experiences with men is entirely irrelevant.
Avatar n tn Now, I am wondering if it is ok to get the new vaccine for shingles even though I had an outbreak shingles. Would I be a good candidate for the vaccine??? What are my chances of contacting shingles again with or without the new vaccine. Am wondering about this as I don't think I can handle another outbreak of shingles (the pain etc). I thank you in advance for a reply.
Avatar f tn I took Vatlrex 500mg twice daily for 20 days. While on Valtrex I had tingling and itchy sensations on my face. Stopped taking Valtrex because it cause burning patches around my mouth. After I stopped taking the medication I've develop more symptoms. Is this a side effect from the medication or is because of the Herpes Virus? I've had tingling, itching on my face. Twitching in my legs, arms and body, Heat sensations in the lower part of both legs.
