Avatar f tn I forgot to add that I have never had a breakout/rash. There is one cut that always appears and goes away with medication. I get it every month, since being diagnosed 4 months ago :( Not too bad, but I have a partner and want to do everything in my power to stop risk of spreading.
Avatar n tn You may take the medications however, you need to be closely supervised by your doctor as acyclovir may have side effects considering that you need to take the medications several times a day. Avatar f tn Hello, Shingles can show autoinoculation which will cause the virus to spread from one part of the body to another such as the transfer of the viral particles from the face to the eye area. Shingles mostly effects a particular dermatome on the trunk or eyes. Hence the virus shows predilection for these sites mostly. It can even be spread to others. Hence keep the rash covered and avoid scratching or touching the rash. If accidental touch is there then you can wash your hands with soap and water.
Avatar n tn I am also using a natural progesterone cream. I have my shingles pain back because of coming off the valtrex, I am having heart issues and not sure what to do about hormones. I have been told today to bump up my neurontin to 3X a day and they already upped my amiltriptylene to 100mg at bedtime. I am taking lunesta for sleep. I was not really having hot flashes or night sweats. It just seems the hormone changes have changed the way my body reacts to everything!
Avatar f tn m taking one loratab 10 in the morning around 7 and then one around 12 or 1 in the afternoon , I also take valtrex for the shingles and lysine to help with the shingles also. I take ambien at night to help me sleep. I just don't want to take the pain meds anymore, but ever time I try and quit I can feel my body go into the freaked out shut down mode and I break out in the worst case of shingles.
Avatar n tn The severity and duration of an attack of shingles can be significantly reduced by immediate treatment with antiviral drugs, which include acyclovir, valcyclovir, or famcyclovir. Antiviral drugs may also prevent the reduce or prevent painful after-effects of shingles known as postherpetic neuralgia. I hope this helps. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn It is good that the CT scan and blood test result were fine. Can you elaborate the symptoms you had? Valacyclovir or Valtrex may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, stomach pain, and rarely, mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, hallucinations), confusion, speech problems, unsteady movement, or vision changes. A healthy lifestyle including proper diet, regular exercise and prescription medications for this may help. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Was prescribed Valtrex for about 10 days. All this was taken cared of any shingles eliminated. My question is, would I be a good candidate to have the new vaccine for SHINGLES to prevent it happening again???? I am 74 year old female. Also, doctor, for the past month or so I have been feeling a slight pain on my right side below my rib cage. This pain is not too severe, but it is just an uncomfortable feeling. I have had bouts with I.B.S. causiing loose stools and diarrhea.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed with shingles Wednesday night - went to doctor same day symptoms started as they were significant. Started Valtrex. Have bumps on lower back near sciatic nerve on left side and on left thigh following nerve line. Entire thigh dull to touch but high pain (throbbing, etc). Pain on site at back. Also high pain, burning on left hip, stomach, behind knee. Friday morning noticed third patch of bumps on thigh (more inward) and an increase of bumps on first set of thigh bumps.
Avatar n tn It is unusual to get zoster every month, especially if u r taking valtrex, Are u immunosuppressed eg taking steroids, chemotherapy or are u very run down?
Avatar n tn It may be managed with pain relievers as antivirals like acyclovir are only effective once initiated early on. These medications also have some side effects. Shingles may resolve spontaneously after 3 weeks and they usually present with crusts and tingling pain. Another differential for your friend is folliculitis. This may recur and may be contagious. It can spread through direct skin to skin contact.
Avatar f tn valtrex and acyclovir have the same basic side effects. Valtrex is turned into acyclovir inside the body.
Avatar n tn Three days later I went to minor care where they told me that I had Shingles. They started me on Valtrex and sent me home. Three hours later I was on my bed vomiting for 14 hours. I had Vertigo from hell! I could not move my head or the room would spin violently. Finally I asked my husband to call an ambulance- I couldn’t take anymore. I remember screaming when they pulled me from the bed and on to the stretcher. They gave me Zofran in the IV and it did nothing to stop the vomiting.
Avatar n tn Shingles itself is not contagious. If you come into contact with (or I should say if the blisters come into contact) with another person who HAS NOT had the chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine they will most likely develop/ acquire chickenpox. Someone that has had chickenpox or the vaccine CANNOT acquire shingles from you. Because, they already have the virus living inside of their body in hibernation.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Shingles on Monday. Although i had only one small red spot, I experienced three days of extremely intense back and uterine pain prior to my doctor visit. On Tuesday, a rash, wrapping around my middrift ,appeared. The pain intensified to the point of no return. (I suffered nerve damage from a botched angiogram in July/09, so I know pain well.) My question is: Would the Valtrex (antiviral) be ineffective because it was administered after the intense pain had begun?
Avatar m tn Are you having side effects? Or you just want to know if side effects are possible? Side effects are possible with any drug.
Avatar n tn It does sound like shingles, though you are correct, not a common site for shingles but not unheard of by any means. The way the distinction would be made is through a swab test (preferrably PCR) that would look for varicella Zoster and herpes simplex virus. Only that test is going to be able to distinguish between the two for you. My guess is zoster, but if you are concerned, this swab test can be performed.
Avatar f tn Hi, having a positive swab for shingles you would need to have a separate blood test for shingles as its not hsv. Taking meds would not turn a positive into a negative.
Avatar n tn A month in he got what the doctors thought could be shingles and gave him a script for Valtrex. For the past 3 months his penis has been very sensitive and he couldnt last more then a few minutes during sex. After he added the Valtrex to the mix he cant even last a few minutes at all! We never had these problem before he started taking these medications. Is this a side effect of the medications? Is it common?
