Valtrex dosing for outbreak

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosing for outbreak

valtrex

Avatar n tn I get cold sores and was recently prescribed valtrex for outbreaks. Trouble is, it isn't always obvious that I'm going to have an outbreak. I'd rather be safe than sorry - but don't want to take valtrex too often if it isn't safe. Would it be a problem if I took the one day 2,000 mg maybe twice per month when I thought an outbreak might be coming on?
Avatar f tn I have it on hand should I increase my dosing to head this off, I work for a doctor and we usually prescribe 5qd for 5/days..... any advice?
Avatar m tn And how long should the oral outbreak last if Valtrex is taken immediately upon noticing the first signs of the outbreak?
Avatar f tn m going to go to a new doctor and ask for the acyclovir twice daily dosing. Good thing for the internet...
Avatar f tn s 2x/day dosing for suppressive therapy. I really recommend stopping the valtrex for a month now, letting your body get a break and then trying one of the other antivirals.
Avatar m tn Is the risk of transmission still 4-5% even if we are having sex as frequently as we are? And does the fact that I’ve had the virus for 7 years and have never experienced an outbreak have any effect on the risk of transmission? Also, I read that in the Valtrex study, a significant portion of the infected partners forgot to take the medication everyday like they were supposed to.
Avatar n tn What if i have an outbreak while im on it? Do i start taking Valtrex, 3 times a day and then continue my 1 a day after 7 days of the 3 a day? Im just a wreck about all this, it makes you so paranoid!
Avatar m tn What would you recommend I do as far as dosing the Valtrex? Do you think this is still the inital outbreak manifesting itself? Is there anything you can suggest as far as relief from the neuropathic pain? I have found NSAIDs and narcotics to be largely ineffective. Thank you!
Avatar m tn Since then I have had 2 minor outbreaks, both on my waist near the navel. I currently use Valtrex when I feel an outbreak coming on and it seems to suppress the symptoms. I'm recently in a new relationship and need to discuss with my new partner before we become sexually active, but before I do I had a couple of questions. Since my outbreaks are on the waist a condom will obviously not cover that area.
Avatar f tn I am trying to figure out how to minimize outbreaks (I seem to get one after every infusion) I am currently on generic valtrex which I had only been taking for outbreaks. I looked up the standard dosing for prevention of outbreaks but that doesnt seem to keep them at bay either. I cant stop getting th remicade so are there any suggestions as to what I can do?
Avatar f tn OK. So its been nearly 2 months since I've been diagnosed with this inconvenience. Since I never had a "noticeable outbreak", every little itch or tingling that I get spooks me (The reason why I say that is because the time I had sex with my ex, I did have some tingling and 5 days later he had small blisters on his penis, so I know he contracted it from me).
Avatar f tn Hello, i had a hsv 1 genital outbreak about a month ago, i have had this for six years and only one outbreak since the first time, my question is, do i really need to stay on the valtrex for surpresive therapy, or would it be smarter to stay on it to avoid giving it to someone else
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
Avatar f tn I know of someone who was on Valtrex 500 one pill per day and never had an outbreak for years. Couldn't afford them myself so didn't go for it.
Avatar m tn My problem is I am having monthly to twice monthly breakouts of hsv sores on the margin of my lip. I have taken 1000mg Valtrex daily for a few months now and I am still getting very frequent outbreaks. This is becoming mentally and physically taxing. Anxiety levels never get a chance to subside which creates a viscous cycle I am sure. Do you have any thoughts for me? Do I bump up to 2000mg Valtrex daily to get this under control? IS this normal? Is there any hope of this subsiding with time?
Avatar f tn Also, does Valtrex or Lysine cause yeast? Can too much Lysine cause an outbreak? If 500 mg of Valtrex reduces transmission by 50%, then does 1 mg per day suppressive reduce it more? I have HSV2.
Avatar n tn I have not had any outbreaks at all, I occasionally have burning and itching, but beyond that nothing else. I have been on supressive therapy w/ Valtrex since the end of may. I have had pain on lower right abdomen, under my ribcage it feels, and pain on my right lower back. Is this a symptom of Herpes, or can this be a reaction to the Valtrex?
Avatar n tn ( they gave you the wrong dose of valtrex too. It should be 1gm 2x/day for 7-10 days since this is a newly acquired infection for you we assume. Give them a call monday and tell them to check the PDR to see that they prescribed you the wrong medication and get them to correct their mistake and give you the proper prescription.
Avatar m tn My valacyclovir dosing was 1000mg twice a day for 5 days (3 courses total over 3 month period)
Avatar n tn The rate of resistance to valtrex is about 1% in otherwise healthy folks. It really isn't going to be an issue for you. did you ever follow up on your other issues?
Avatar f tn i had my first outbreak two months ago and i had a fever and several sores. the doctor said i have hsv1 genital. i am now trying to figure out if i am having a second outbreak. i have a small "pimple" down there that i noticed a few hours ago. i have a perscription for valtrex.. my question is should i wait until i am sure that i am having an outbreak (formation of sores) to take valtrex or should i go ahead and take it now?
Avatar f tn I read that outbreaks and shedding decrease over time. Will my shedding decrease even if I stay on Valtrex and never have an outbreak? (Does somethign about actually having an outbreak cause the shedding to decrease) 2. If a partner touches my vagina and then touches himself, is this a likely way of him becoming infected given that I am on Valtrex and that the type is type 1? 3. If i miss a dose of Valtrex am I making myself more contagious and more susceptible to an outbreak? 4.
Avatar n tn t think the rash is going to be gone in 2 days so I am not sure if I would additional dosing of the Valtrex or if the 1 week was enough to alter the course. I am not sure what the protocol would be in that situation. The rash definitly hurts. It hurts to move, sleep, even the air from the fan causes pain. The skin next to the rash is sensitive to the touch and I actually have an on and off pain running down my leg. Not sure if this is normal, but hopefully it will pass.
Avatar m tn d try acyclovir suppressively instead of the valtrex and see if that works better for you. Even though valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug, some folks just do better on the acyclovir than they do the valtrex. My guess would be because you get less active acyclovir in your body with plain ole acyclovir than you do valtrex but we have no studies to back this assumption.
Avatar n tn I can say that my second outbreak was in fact on outbreak. Lesions exactly like the first, only fewer of them and less severe, and the Valtrex nipped it in the bud within a few days. I don't take Valtrex suppressively, and don't plan to at this point. The virus sheds very little and statistically most folks have 1 or 2 OBs the first year, and then maybe 1 every other year after that. However, if you are in a relationship you may want to - it really depends on the big picture.
Avatar m tn Then in 2009 she contracted herpes (hsv2). She is now having an outbreak of herpes (starting to get under control after 2 rounds of valtrex, back on acyclovir for 2 days) and a flare of Behcet's. Prednisone will make the painful vaginal Behcet's lesions go away but will cause another outbreak of herpes. Does anyone have any suggestions? She's about to leave for a required college trip. Thanks.
Avatar f tn I had another outbreak so I went to my GP, I had them blood test me and they prescribed valtrex for the outbreak which again helped and healed the outbreak. The blood test came back negative but it was only one month since I had the original outbreak. I went to a new OB finally and I had probably had had 6 outbreaks at that point. My last one is current, it started worse than my primary and at this point I'm on suppressive and on meds to take when currently on an outbreak.
Avatar f tn I was recently diagnosed with HSV-2. My first outbreak was bad but in comparison to most, not so terrible. It's been two months since my initial outbreak and I have a feeling that I'm about to experience another. I have a sensative area in my vagina and it's tender to the touch. This is different than my initial but have read that the symptoms may differ in response to medicine.
Avatar f tn Then last year after giving birth I started to have frequent outbreaks, so my doctor put me on daily Valtrex. A few days ago I felt like I was going to get an outbreak, so I doubled up on my Valtrex and took 500mg twice a day. Today I noticed that my outbreak was certainly there. Is the Valtrex not helping me? I am very confused why I am getting an outbreak since I am on Valtrex and it is GHSV1 which shouldn't have frequent outbreaks.
