Valacyclovir valtrex dose

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir valtrex dose

valtrex

Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn Valtrex is the dominant brand name, valacylcovir the generic name. Do not take both; it would be an overdose. (Probably not harmful, but not recommended.) You get maximum effectiveness against oral herpes with the 2 g (2000 mg) dose taken twice a day apart; higher, more frequent, or more prolonged treatment will make no difference. 2) You are typical in not having an identifed trigger of your outbreaks. Most people cannot pinpoint particular events.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
Avatar f tn If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir. The benefit of valtrex is that it can be given at a higher dose and only once per day. However, all studies with acyclovir that have had similar outcomes to valtrex have been with twice daily dosing.
Avatar f tn Okay but is one dose of 500mg of valacyclovir the same as valtrex? Or is it even effective?
Avatar m tn the problem is, his symptoms keep disappearring and reoccurring, despite taking a very high amount of Valtrex (1-2 grams twice daily while having symptoms) and even a maintenance dose in between (1 gram daily). This last time, he had prostatitis in addition, which I read can also be a secondary infection with Herpes. He saw his urologist for that and was put on antibiotics which seemed to work. he hasn't been officially diagnosed yet for HSV2 because he never had sores present.
Avatar m tn how were you originally diagnosed? what are your symptoms now?
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar m tn re on the right side of the base of the penis and start as 3-4+ small red bumps that eventually turn into blisters that break open, scab over, and disappear within a week or so without any intervention on my part (save for the upping of the Valtrex dose). In the longer episode about two months back, another set of red bumps started and finished the same way concurrently with the others that were in the same location, just a few days apart.
Avatar m tn It seems that sine I'm getting mixed messages in eagards to Valtrex dosages during an outbreak. I currently take 500 mg of Valacyclovir daily as a suppressant. But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression?
Avatar n tn Generic valacyclovir is equally effective as the Valtrex brand. If it isn't working, it suggests that the problem isn't herpes. Probably the best approach at this point is to promptly (within a couple of days) get professionally examined to confirm the diagnosis of the current problem. I'm not necessarily doubting that you have genital herpes, just questioning this particular episode. Alternatively, is there any possibility you have newly acquired herpes?
Avatar n tn Do report back to your doctor that the prescription is not helping, and that you may need to (a) double your dose, (b) try the brand name itself (Valtrex, rather than the generic valacyclovir) or (c) try an entirely different antiviral. Acyclovir works best for me and for many others, for example. I hope you find relief soon. There may be over-the-counter topicals that will help with the discomfort. I've heard that folks sometimes use the oral herpes ointments with success.
Avatar n tn If 3 docs say its zoster then its pretty definitely zoster. The valtrex dose given by Londres is correct for the time when the outbreak is present. In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex.
Avatar f tn Famvir and famciclovir are the same thing, as are Valtrex and Valacyclovir. One is the brand name, one is the generic. I'd stay on the valacyclovir. The last thing you need right now is another outbreak, and stopping antivirals can trigger an ob. I can't advise you on the amiltriptiline. If it's not working, maybe you shouldn't continue it, but PLEASE talk to your doctor before stopping it.
Avatar f tn Welcome to the STD forum. MedHelp encourages forum moderators to avoid overt disagreement with questioners' own doctors. However, I'm afraid your doctor is mistaken. Valacyclovir (Valtrex) does not cause significant liver damage. In fact, it is one of the most nontoxic drugs there is; many patients have taken it for several years without difficulty. Of course any drug can cause very rare or atypical toxicity. Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) are similarly nontoxic.
Avatar f tn That's what my Dr gave me and I'm sure it's valtrex. It's valacyclovir hcl 1 gram tablet. I went to get a second opinion at an std clinic and they confirmed I have herpes type 2. I plan on going back to the std clinic next Wednesday so I can ask more questions b/c my primary Dr seems to not be on her A game when it comes to this situation.
Avatar f tn So now that i found out that i have hsv-1 do i need to take valtrex everyday for the rest of my life if i dont want to get my partner infected?
Avatar m tn In any event, my inital symptoms were quite severe-- fever, groin lymphadenopathy, introtial burning and small red lesions. I started on the inital course of 1000mg Valtrex BID immediately on 10/5-- about two days after my inital symptoms began. I finished the ten day course, but was still experiencing burning as well as neuropathic pain in my feet and buttocks, so I started an additional 10 day course, which finished on 10/25.
Avatar n tn my question is that herpes remained silent with ocasional outbreaks for three years .but now it has become violent and am on valacyclovir daily .if i miss single dose it erupts.can you please tell me sir why this is happening and what should i do to allieviete this//2 weeks back hiv elisa came negative for hiv 1 and 2.
Avatar m tn I have taking both Valtrex & Acyclovir in the past and for me, Valtrex seems to work a lot better for clearing up an ob quicker. Since moving back to the U.S. from Europe, I cannot believe how expensive Valtrex is here in the U.S.! I just want to get confirmation that there is a Generic Valtrex that is NOT Acyclovir - it that correct? My online pharmacy is offering me Valcyclovir which is a lot cheaper than Valtrex but I just want to make sure it isn't Acyclovir before I purchase it.
