If 3 docs say its zoster then its pretty definitely zoster. The valtrex dose given by Londres is correct for the time when the outbreak is present. In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex.
How were you diagnosed as having shingles? Shingles very rarely reoccurs. I'd be questioning the diagnosis of shingles at this point if I were you.
m taking one loratab 10 in the morning around 7 and then one around 12 or 1 in the afternoon , I also take valtrex for the shingles and lysine to help with the shingles also. I take ambien at night to help me sleep. I just don't want to take the pain meds anymore, but ever time I try and quit I can feel my body go into the freaked out shut down mode and I break out in the worst case of shingles.
I've on acyclovir for shingles prevention and had a one night stand 14 weeks ago. I had a blood test at the 7 week mark and it was negative. When should I have my next blood test to be sure I'm negative.
Is there anything I can do at this point to determine if I had shingles vs herpes? My primary doc suggested taking another blood test for antibodies in two months. If the conclusion is to be to tested in a few months, when is the earliest date I could/should test for the antibodies to get an accurate result?
Is hand holding, hugging, sleeping together (non-sexually or sexually minus kissing) safe?
What would be your prognosis?

Hi Grace does not pop in often but i will try to help. The recommended dosage for valtrex per terry warren is below:
1. first time outbreaks 1000 mg twice a day for ten days.
2. recurrent outbreaks is 2 grams, twice in one day, 12 hours apart or 500 mg twice a day for 3 days.
3. suppression is 1000 mg once a day for people wheo have 10 or more outbreaks per year. 500 mg once a day for people who have 9 or fewer per year. Doses are taken every day.
Was prescribed Valtrex for about 10 days. All this was taken cared of any shingles eliminated. My question is, would I be a good candidate to have the new vaccine for SHINGLES to prevent it happening again???? I am 74 year old female.
Also, doctor, for the past month or so I have been feeling a slight pain on my right side below my rib cage. This pain is not too severe, but it is just an uncomfortable feeling. I have had bouts with I.B.S. causiing loose stools and diarrhea.

they gave you the wrong dose of valtrex too. It should be 1gm 2x/day for 7-10 days since this is a newly acquired infection for you we assume. Give them a call monday and tell them to check the PDR to see that they prescribed you the wrong medication and get them to correct their mistake and give you the proper prescription.
He perscribed Valtrex and Clomitrizole Topical Ointment. He also drew blood for an IGM test to see there is an active infection however he did not swab the blisters/bumps. Doctor C) A dermatologist I called that had a cancellation, this was today. He looked at it, doesn't think it's Shingles and told me to STOP taking the topical ointment but keep taking the Valtrex.
I realize I have another thread but I would like to know if valtrex or any other med would fix this. To rehash my situation I have tested positive for hsv1 via blood test score was 30. I have had a burn tip of penis for 10 weeks since the incident. I don't need to hear that this is not a symptom of herpes or its anxiety related. All I want to know is would herpes meds cure burn in tip of penis regardless of length of time with no blisters?
It does sound like shingles, though you are correct, not a common site for shingles but not unheard of by any means. The way the distinction would be made is through a swab test (preferrably PCR) that would look for varicella Zoster and herpes simplex virus. Only that test is going to be able to distinguish between the two for you. My guess is zoster, but if you are concerned, this swab test can be performed.
You should've gone back to the ER. I've actually had Shingles without rash at all. I also had it the first time with just the smallest start of a burning rash. The doctor took one look at it and I was told that it was a good thing I noticed this in the shower like I did. He told me that if I had waited just one day, the rash would've been more than just that isolated patch I found as soon as the water hit me. I was put on antiviral and antibiotics, which is the usual protocol.
I recently went to a clinic for lesions and pain while urinating and they did a culture. It came back positive for herpes, but they didn't test whether it was HSV-1 or HSV-2. They put me on Valtrex which I've been taking for nine days, and yesterday I was symptom free when I went to bed. I was awoken around midnight with an intense outbreak of what I I'm fairly sure is shingles, which I have had only one time before and that was years ago.
There are other medications out there to manage your shingles - have you tried valtrex or acyclovir? There are medications for nerve pain. I think you should speak to your doctor about a plan to get off if you feel you can, there are meds that will help.
For me personally, I've lived with chronic pain for years and the fear of how I would feel without the pills was worse than what I am actually experiencing.
