Valacyclovir daily dose

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir daily dose

valtrex

Avatar m tn I'm on daily 1 gram valacyclovir for suppressive therapy. I can feel a new outbreak coming. Would it help if a take the valacyclovir twice daily for a couple of days to help with the OB?
Avatar m tn you can either split your pills in half and take 500mg 2x/day for 3 days or you can just take the 2gm 2x/day for 1 day dose and then go back to your 1gm daily suppressive dose - totally up to you.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn I am on 500mg daily suppressive treatment for HSV-2. Had it since 2007 and been taking daily meds for about 12-18 months. Don't get any symptoms or outbreaks. My question is, can I cut each tablet in half and have the equivalent of 250mg everyday? Is that how tablets generally work? i.e. half the tablet halves the active component? If that works then a 6 month script will last a year and I'm not taking as much medication over the same time period.
Avatar f tn I have had several outbreaks since then, but they were all pretty minor (1-2 sores). I was taking Valtrex daily for about a month and a half, but I developed what appeared to be cystic acne the whole time I was on it. As soon as I stopped, my skin cleared up, but I had another outbreak, so I went back on it and my skin started to break out again. I've never read anything about that being a side effect, but it was the only explanation.
Avatar f tn But is 500mg of valacyclovir a day a good dose for suppression?
Avatar m tn (Acyclovir probably is effective, but you might consider getting a prescription for valacyclovir instead. It need be taken only once daily and is better documented to prevent transmission to partners.) If you do not take continuous anti-herpetic therapy, you should plan on consistent condom use for vaginal or anal sex. Asymptomatic viral shedding -- i.e. potential transmissibility -- can occur at any time.
Avatar f tn Ask about valacyclovir in a dose of 1 gram twice daily (one of the main CDC recommendations for initial genital herpes).
Avatar m tn Acyclovir probably works at a dose of 400 mg twice daily, but has not been specifically studied for prevention of transmission. Once daily (800 mg) probably is OK, but I wouldn't recommend relying on it. Time of day of single dose therapy shouldn't make any difference. All these drugs are extremely safe with no known long term side effects. LIke you, I hope some of the newer approaches to HSV vaccines will be productive, but I am not highly optimistic.
Avatar f tn The official prescribing information for valacyclovir indicates a 1% chance of minor abnormalities of liver function in people taking valacyclovir, which was slightly higher than 0.5% for placebo. That difference was not statistically significant and there is no suggestion even for routine liver tests in people taking the drug. Here is a link to the official prescribing information about the drug, as approved by the US Food and Drug Administration: http://us.gsk.
Avatar n tn my question is that herpes remained silent with ocasional outbreaks for three years .but now it has become violent and am on valacyclovir daily .if i miss single dose it erupts.can you please tell me sir why this is happening and what should i do to allieviete this//2 weeks back hiv elisa came negative for hiv 1 and 2.
Avatar m tn the problem is, his symptoms keep disappearring and reoccurring, despite taking a very high amount of Valtrex (1-2 grams twice daily while having symptoms) and even a maintenance dose in between (1 gram daily). This last time, he had prostatitis in addition, which I read can also be a secondary infection with Herpes. He saw his urologist for that and was put on antibiotics which seemed to work. he hasn't been officially diagnosed yet for HSV2 because he never had sores present.
Avatar m tn m getting mixed messages in eagards to Valtrex dosages during an outbreak. I currently take 500 mg of Valacyclovir daily as a suppressant. But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression?
Avatar f tn Maybe the once daily valacyclovir will help alleviate some of this anxiety. Any knew opinions on taking 500mg daily vs.1 gm daily? Thanks!
Avatar m tn Finally, with regard to valacyclovir, I think your question meant to distinguish between 1000 mg twice daily for therapy and once daily for suppression is this correct?
Avatar m tn I agree with you on the protective effects, including that you are currently taking daily valacyclovir, all combine to reduce your risk for transmission of infection. I should also point out that while we DO know that each of these variables acts independently to reduce risk, how they all work together at the same time is not possible to estimate.
Avatar n tn By the way, the currently recommended treatment for recurrent oral herpes is only 2 large doses of valacyclovir (2 grams), 12 hours apart. In fact, you probably could even skip the second dose; just one 2 gram dose probably would do it.
Avatar f tn Yesterday, a recent outbreak had just about healed (the source of my autoinnoculation question) and yesterday was the forth day of 1000mg valacyclovir daily. However, yesterday afternoon I noticed what I thought were prodrome symptoms, which I didn't worry about (and thought I was wrong) because I had been on the larger dose of medication.
Avatar n tn As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar m tn 1) There is a school of thought that the standard suppressive dose of valacyclovir (500 mg once daily) might be on the low side, i.e. that double that dose (1 gram) would be more effective. Since the higher dose hasn't been studied for its prevention effect, there is no way to know with certainty, hence a modicum of debate among the experts. Personally, I would take the higher dose and often recommend it to my patients.
Avatar f tn I wanted to know in percentages please what are the odds that I could transmit my infection to an uninflected male if we do not use condoms but I am put on a daily antiviral? Also, I have heard that hsv1 is less susceptible to valacyclovir therefore a higher dose might be needed. Is it okay for me to take 1g everyday? I am just concerned about how taking this dose everyday would affect my body as in my liver/kidneys. Please Dr Handsfield I would greatly appreciate your advice! Thank you!
Avatar m tn re on a daily suppressant regimen of taking Valtrex(Valacyclovir-500mg) and L-Lysine-1000mg, what is the risk of possibly spreading infection of herpes 2 when having unprotected oral sex given to you by a non-infected person and also having intercourse with a non-herpes person if you are not showing or feeling symptoms?
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar f tn I have simplex one and I've been on the generic for Valtrex for probably a year now. My symptoms have of course completely cleared up although I was getting OB's about every 2 to 3 weeks. I also take 1000mg of lysine daily. I try to stay away from the things that I know trigger OB's for me. However I want to get off of the med's because I don't want to become dependent on them. But i'm worried that ill get constant OB's like I used to get. What should I do?
