Avatar f tn My sister went through a period of time when her tongue kept swelling and she thought it was b/c of an allergic reaction to something in her diet, which ended up not being the case. It remains a mystery why this happened. She does have hypothyroid and I am wondering if lip and/or tongue swelling can be a symptom of thyroid issues.
Avatar n tn what might be the cause of waking up suddenly from sleep during night because of a choking sensation due to severe swelling of tongue (so much swelling that I was unable to fit in my dentures) .This was associated with extremely garbled speech. I didn't call 911 because i couldn't speak. I checked in mirror and my smile was not distorted. I am a 63 yr. old female who is on medication for hypertension and have a strong family history for stroke and heart disease.
441506 tn?1267533765 t get a rash, but most of the swellings are itchy, and hot. I racked my brain after the tongue swelling trying to think of what would of caused it. I did nothing new. I have been tested in the past. Dust mites were the worst thing that raised up. I was working in a clean kitchen when it started. If you could give me a sense of timing, how long from contacting an allergen, and the swelling? I did not know how far back into the day I should go. I have been very stressed, tho.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm sorry I have no answers regarding this matter but am very curious to see the answers from others - because my grandfather's tongue is swelling as well. It's not to the point of protruding out of his mouth, but it looks bigger than usual. I was thinking maybe perhaps it's because there's no ability to control the tongue like before, or probably an allergic reaction to his medications.
Avatar n tn I have recently noticed that the area under my tongue is swollen. whenever I lift my tongue, I experience pain that goes through thr extending part under the tongue. Then about two days ago, I discovered little small bumbs on top of the swollen part. Now it hurts even worst. Can you help me at all? what is this called and how can I treat it.
Avatar m tn In any case I had a lot of pain in that area, but also there was swelling under the right side of my tongue, which was also painful. I told my uncle (who is a physician) and he told me to use Listerine when I brush my teeth, that it works as an antibiotic and the gland would go down and the pain would go away. I decided to take him up on his advice.
Avatar f tn Symptoms did not go away and progessed the beginning of November into severe pain in my mouth, a feeling of severe swelling under the front and back of the tongue (although still no swelling actually seen), extreme pain in the jaw that was relieved by heat, and swelling in the nasopharynx. Bloodwork at this time showed high white count (left shift), high IgE and high eosinophil.
Avatar n tn I have a student who tongue actually gets stuck to the roof of his mouth. The doctor ordered Valium 2 mg because he thought it was seizure related, but the Valium does not help. He was in the ER for 5 hours during the weekend. Believe it or not Benadryl helped him. This might occur 2-3 times per day while in school. He cannot swallow. He does not drool and not having body movements or anything else that resembles a seizure. No pain involved and no spasm of the tongue.
Avatar m tn About a year ago I began waking up about 4 or 5 AM with a swollen tongue. After spending time in the emergency ward receiving injection and steroids my tongue became normal. It was believed to be caused by my BP medicine which at that time was Lisinopril which I had been taking for 20 years. Since January I have gone through 4 or 5 different families of BP medicine, but still have the problem. I am currently recording all my food in a diary hoping to find some connection.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, things have gotten worse on my end. I was having intermittent swelling under my tongue, the back of my tongue, the back of my throat/roof of my mouth and my jaw. At first it was alot of swelling and discomfort. The swelling in my tongue became very intense and I was put on a 5 day course of prednisone while beginning daily claritin and a nasal spray. I felt great on the prednisone, all of the swelling went away and I could eat again.
Avatar n tn Hello- I am 21 and was diagnosed and treated for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. I have none of the known risk factors except for being in the small rare group of otherwise healthy young people with oral cancer. I had a hemiglossectomy (they removed about 1/6 of the tongue - right lateral), a flap was taken from my left and a partial neck dissection. The lymph nodes came back clean as did the margins around my tumor. My surgery was 19 days ago.
Avatar n tn My gums are swelling inside on the top portion above tongue I just want to know what might be the cause of this one and is their any cure because it's hard to eat
Avatar n tn I am unsure if this is a dental or medical concern. I have an ever increasing amount of pain and tongue swelling. The pain is so bad I must force myself to eat. I generally don't complete eating becasue the stimulation pain to my tongue becomes unbarable. I wear a dental appliance that is several years old and I clean it in boiling water often. Recently, the swelling affects my speech because touching in the mouth sends pains through my tongue that are unbearable.
Avatar m tn Is there any swelling in the neck region? Can he breathe and swallow normally?
Avatar n tn I haven't heard of specific "tongue swelling" as an issue with either kidney disease or diabetes, but in general fluid retention is an issue with kidney disease. Tongue swelling can also be indicative of specific allergies. She should talk to her doctor about this symptom because it can be scary if her whole tongue swells enough to block proper swallowing. Do encourage her to talk to her doc.
Avatar n tn Yesterday I noticed what seems to be a lump(swelling) on the right lateral side of the tongue, very deep inside(right where the portion of the tongue that you can move ends). The thing is composed of 3-4 little things(folliate papillae?). It is of the same colour as is the tongue on the lateral and you can easy move it around and even separate the 3-4 components. My question is: does this resemble tongue cancer in any way, or it could be foliate papillitis:inflamation of the foliate papillae.
Avatar m tn When I had my surgery, my tongue was so swollen that I couldn't even drink water. They said it was caused by the tube cutting my tongue. Is your tongue just sore or swollen?
773987 tn?1247079815 I have Hashimitos but my thyroid labs come back normal every time, despite having classical symptoms (cold intolerance, fatigue, muscle weakness etc...). How long did it take for the tongue swelling/scalloping to go away once on the medication? Did your tongue feel uncomfortable as well making it hard to speak?
338416 tn?1420045702 Ah, the tongue swelling is finally going down. I really have to wonder if maybe I bit my tongue or something.

487969 tn?1249313291 I had a CT done 6/4 that showed shotty nodes, opacification (patchy) of the mastoid air cells, enlarged thyroid with right side predominance. Now I woke up with this swelling tongue. I does not seem as swollen now, but this a.m. you could see the teeth impressions on the sides. I have one spot on it that is kind of sore, like a taste bud irritation on the side. I take 25 mcg levothyroxine. My last blood level (TSH only b/c endo is a jerk) was 0.557.
Avatar m tn I don't know what you can use for it. You should see your doctor. It could be allergies or something else. You don't want the tongue swelling up on you, it could be dangerous one day by preventing you from breathing or swallowing.
