Avatar n tn But know that not everyone is equipped to do well as a vegetarian -- most vegetarians do it for ideological reasons and it is harder to get all your nutrients as a vegetarian, particularly methionine and B12, so you do have to learn how to do it well. Food groups don't differ for vegetarians and meat eaters, just the source of protein does.
Avatar f tn Okay, I'll try again, for the last time. Do whatever you want, just do it healthfully. Many people don't digest beans very well. My wife doesn't. One theory is that your blood type has something to do with it, others say it depends on your ethnicity, others on other things. A food isn't made healthy by being a bean or unhealthy by being an animal product, it's how our individual digestive systems work. Take salads.
Avatar f tn t eat, which is the same as non-vegetarians -- simple carbs, which turn to sugar quickly and are stored as fat if not burned. Many vegetarians around the world have a nice soft middle because they eat so much white flour and potatoes and the like. You need to make sure you get your protein. And then you need to exercise.
Avatar n tn There is very little B12 the body can use in the plant foods we normally eat. I managed health food stores for years, and while vegans are usually doing it for ideological reasons and really don't care about health, vegetarians tend to be different. Note that most "vegetarians" in India use a lot of dairy to get what they can't get in plant food. Dairy is not a great food for humans, but that's what they do.
Avatar f tn Vegetarians who eat dairy products and eggs can obtain enough B-12 through responsible consumption of those foods. For instance, a cup of plain, low-fat yogurt contains 1.37 micrograms of B-12 -- about half your daily requirement. A cup of skim milk contains 1.23 micrograms. A single large egg delivers .45 micrograms of B-12. The ample amount of B-12 in these foods makes it easy for ovo-lacto vegetarians, meaning those who east eggs and dairy products, to consume adequate amounts of B-12.
Avatar n tn And take vitamine B12. Its common for vegetarians to have a B12 deficiency because its excpecially found in meat. B12 is important for the developping brain.
1666434 tn?1325262350 Is it possible for vegetarians to follow a diabetic safe diet? Is the key really with the processed foods because of all the sugar combinations and chemicals? I was trying to look into this last night and was only able to find some brief mentions, saying that legumes are safe because of the balance of carbs and proteins, but that was it. If anyone else has anything to add I would love to hear it.
Avatar f tn The thing he said about soy is still incorrect. It really has nothing to do with thyroid conditions either, because the information Dr. Mercola talks about applies to everyone equally. Avoid soy like the plague. Run away from it. Those soy meat substitutes that vegetarians love? Run far away from them. The majority of soy products on the market are GMO, making an already bad for you product even worse.
Avatar n tn Bread, pasta, rice, cookies and such are caloric foods. You should avoid sugary foods because they may worsen burping and flatulence. If you have iron or B12 deficiency it's not likely you can correct this in short time just with foods, so you'd need to take supplements. So, right now you are not on vegetarian food (chicken nuggets)? If you're prepared for one 4 day elimination diet trial, you can try it, but what are you prepared to eat (or not) rigt now?
1991478 tn?1326901117 While he talks mainly about a Japanese food called nattokinese, there are other appropriately fermented foods, like cheese (not all) that are healthy for you in regards to fermented foods. Definitely not all cheeses. Another tyramine food, though, so it's out for me. Vegans and vegetarians who don't like natto should consider supplementing.
1281181 tn?1271688273 Thank you for the suggestion - unfortunately he is a vegetarian! But for non-vegetarians’ this is good advice - I did go on the website!
Avatar m tn Actually, vegetarian diets don't in and of themselves make you skinny -- if you eat a lot of simple carbs you'll get as fat as anyone else. Meat diets don't make people fat, if you eat lean meat in reasonable portions you'll be thinner than most vegetarians. It's how much and what you eat, not the ideology, that determines weight.
Avatar m tn You say you're eating one small meal a day. Migraines can be triggered by not eating regularly through the day if you're prone to them. Migraines are a vascular problem, meaning they are caused by constricted blood vessels, and nausea is a symptom of migraines. You might want to see a holistic nutritionist to study what you eat -- perhaps you're eating unhealthy foods for you. Just being a vegetarian isn't eating healthy -- you still have to figure out what suits you best.
Avatar f tn She will only recommend supplements for people who absolutely cannot get the nutrient from food. The theory is that foods rich in a certain nutrient also contain other nutrients that boost the power of all. That's why people often take megadoses of supplements, never achieving the desired effect on their health. It's all very complex biochemistry, and nutrition has no clue to most of it at this time (she fully admits).
Avatar m tn B-12 crisis Overdoing the dosage of vitamin B-12 is generally not a problem for vegetarians, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) that carries an important warning about cardiovascular health. A study tested the effects of B vitamin supplements on more than 500 patients who had undergone coronary angioplasty. Half of the group received a supplement of folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12, while the other half received a placebo.
Avatar f tn I get heartburn super bad. During my last pregnancy, Zantac wouldn't work for me. I had to start taking Prilosec. It was awful, but for me, it didn't matter what I ate.
Avatar f tn Hello! Can anyone tell me any foods or snacks that would be a good buy on a limited budget? I'm worried I'm not getting enough food in my new diet. My college cafeteria does its best for vegetarians, but it's really a bit terrible all round. I have to stick to salads and veggie burgers (unless they run out). I'm also exercising a lot now so I'm worried I may not be retaining enough calories let alone nutrients.
Avatar f tn Vitamin B12 deficiency is the most likely cause of your symptoms. Vegetarians and vegans are in the higher risk group for B12 deficiency. Sublingual (under the tongue) B12 is very effective to boost levels. Avatar n tn I have no health problems besides a slightly higher than normal heart rate (100-115bmp) which my cardiologist describes as adequate for me. I recently had blood work done. My GFR was around 58 and my BP was 142/84 (usually 110/76). I've been a vegetarian for about 3 1/2 years now and feel like my diet is better than most. I'm basically wondering if my diet could cause a low GFR and if I should be concerned about this?
1266263 tn?1270153368 What is a food that is SUPER for energy? I am on a gluten-free diet by the way.
Avatar f tn My son is 22 and is taking 7.5 mg abilify in the mornings for past 8 months. He feels sleepy throughout the day on some days. Other days, he is completely fine. Is this possibly caused by abilify? Thanks.
Avatar f tn He's going to know a lot more about this than we do, I hope. Do you supplement with B12? Were your levels of folic acid and B6 low? These three are in balance in a healthy body. It's usually excess b6 that causes neuralgia. And what form was the B12 in? Also, when you see your doctor, get tested again -- if this only was one test, it could have been an anomaly.
6295353 tn?1395241495 Plzz help!!! Ive tried talking a bowel movement for the past three days and I can't :( idk what else to do.!! I'm 38 weeks, what can I do?
Avatar f tn Well, it's a controversial subject (sorry Helen, looks like your thread got off toipic) for many because (just like the pharm companies) the meat industry is so huge. There have been many doctors out there who have spoke out against meat (including Dr. Spock who, in his last book, said children should not eat meat or even milk).
29837 tn?1414534648 Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is not commonly found in other foods. Tomatoes are often seen as a super food because they are loaded with potassium and vitamin C. They are low in cholesterol, sodium, low in calories, are a fat-free food and are extremely high in water content. http://www.ehow.com/list_5779694_foods-low-platelets.
Avatar f tn Low-Carb Flat Breads Low-carb flat breads, including mission tortillas, contain about 30 grams of protein each, making them a great source of protein for vegetarians to choose as part of their diet. 2. Chick Peas Chick peas are a food that is full of protein. These beans have 16 grams of protein per 200 gram serving. This is by far one of the best sources of protein for vegetarians. 3. Kidney Beans Coming in third, kidney beans provide 15 grams of protein per 200 gram serving.
Avatar n tn Animal protein contains all the essential amino acids. It is important for muscle mass and bone health. Studies show that vegetarians are deficient in creatine, which has harmful effects on muscle and brain function. Carnosine protects against various degenerative processes in the body. DHA is the most active form of Omega-3 in the body and primarily found in animal foods. The plant form of Omega-3s, ALA, is inefficiently converted to DHA in the body.
