Avatar n tn Okay, we're now about 5 days into learning that our daughter is diabetic. So really any info at this time is going to be greatly appreciated. Some of our most immediate concerns revolve around diet. We fully understand how to do the calculations we need, how to check labels, really most of the basics. But we are also trying to find resources that are a little more specific as to snacks that are no-carb, low-carb.
Avatar n tn Dear winkster, Actually a diabetic diet is really only what a healthy diet would be for people without diabetes. And fruits are a part of that even though they have sugar it get metabolized like any other carbohydrates.

Also, avoid starchy foods like potatoes, rice, and any foods made with white flour - white bread, crackers, pasta/noodles - as these turn quickly into sugar after eating. Avatar n tn I agree with the girls above.. low carb diet has been shown to help fertility- even in people without PCOS or prediabetes.. also drinking milk that isn't nonfat, like 2% and cheese and almonds "healthy fats" is shown to improve hormones that can help with getting pregnant.. here is a great article that cameout in newsweek ealrier this year! http://www.newsweek.
Avatar f tn I had that with my first, I haven't been tested yet with my second. The specialist will help you figure out diet, but the biggest thing was to watch your carbohydrates. They are what converts into sugars. Eat small meals throughout the day instead of 3. Pasta, breads, ice cream, sodas, juices, anything like that will have a high carb count. Take a look at the nutritional information and see how much carbs are in each.
5536886 tn?1455827346 Well our doctor said not to do a low carb diet as young children need the carbs to help them grow and to help develop the brain. And yes fats can be used for energy but it is not as good a source as carbs. Also burning fats instead of carbs is what produces keytones in the blood. Our son was just in keytoacidosis (which is how we got the diagnosis) so the possibility of adding more keytones is not something we will be trying to do.

This is the beginning of ketosis caused by the body switching from burning carbohydrates to only fat. It is telling you that your carb intake is way too low. Ketosis can be hard on your kidneys so don't eliminate carbs altogether.

It crept up slowly on me, but when my A1C broke through 7.0, I was given 90 days to see a significant drift downward, or begin a drug therapy. I immediately began a paleo style diet. I refused to eat anything containing "white"; bread, sugar, rice, potatoes, pasta...PASTA!!. I also shunned grains of any kind like rolled oats, wheat. Also out were honey, most fruits, lots of types of beans, peas, and corn.

(like increased cardiovascular risk, gall bladder disease, kidney disease - all false). 'Nough said. I believe it as a scientist. I will probably need to delete this.

Avatar n tn Eating a low carb diet is the best option. Eat lean protien sources like fish, chicken, beef. For essential fats eat salmon, olive oil, almonds. the only carbs should come from fruit and vegetables. Drink only water not juice.
