Avatar n tn Also, if you notice any changes in your blood pressure, pulse or other symptoms related to enhanced action of Propranolol, you can always adjust the dose to achieve the best possible outcome (again, with your psychiatrist's review). I hope that helps with the first part of your question. Sertraline can be taken any time of the day provided you take it the same time each day. Similarly, you can take Clonazepam at fixed time of the day.
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar m tn I used to take a slow-release Propranolol 80 mg every day, which caused severe tiredness and extreme fatigue, to the point that I was not able to think straight and sometimes could not even get out of bed. Apparently, Propranolol also inhibits the ability for you to burn fat, not to mention gastrointestinal issues. Depression is also significantly higher when taking Propranolol.
Avatar f tn Oops...forgot to elaborate. Clonidine's mechanism of action suppresses sweating...so when discontinued, excessive sweating is not uncommon. The vomiting may or may not be related to the Clonidine as well. Typical average dose of Clonidine is 0.1-0.2 mg. Sounds like you may have been on a significantly higher dose. What was the Clonidine Rx'd for?
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of CampralĀ® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar m tn Thank you so much for your help - we have just read up on CVS and it does hit alot of the markers. We have finally got a course of action we might be able to look at. Your our hero.

212161 tn?1599427282 Equally difficult to elucidate is the trigger for the afferent loop of the reflex leading to the tachycardia. One proposed mechanism is that of direct mechanical stimulation of the left atrium by the distended oesophagus on swallowing a bolus of food. This is supported by the observation that in these patients, inflation of a balloon in the oesophagus at the level of the left atrium leads to tachyarrhythmias that disappear on deflation.

Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
Avatar m tn people taking propranolol go to a dentist, get an injection of local anestethics containing adrenaline, and get a heart rate of 40 with blood pressure 200/110. If you on occations get a blood pressure of 210/110 without any obvious cause, you should consider ruling out conditions inappropriately increasing your stress hormones. A blood pressure of 210/110 is dangerous and should not be ignored.

Avatar m tn In those suffering with PACs and PVCs, I rarely see anyone mention the use of calcium channel blocker to help with these. I can usually control my PACs/PVCs through diet but when I stray and they flare up, calcium channel blockers (diltiazem) work like a charm. It makes them completely go away until it wears off which is about 24 hours (extended release 240), Just curious if anyone knows why doctors do not prescribe these to more patients for PAC/PVC because they seem to work.
Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
Avatar f tn I've taken either omeprazole or propranolol for gas and prevention of variceal bleeding due to portal hypertension on and off for the last couple of years with no ill effects. I had not taken the omeprazole for awhile but when I started treatment with sovaldi and olysio I started taking it again because I was having a huge problem with gas and pressure. It helps me enormously.

Avatar f tn Beta-blockers have been shown to significantly suppress large hemangiomas, although the exact mechanism remains unclear. The use of beta blockers currently requires initial ICU monitoring, and is generally restricted to significant steroid-resistant hemangiomas that are life or vision threatening, or likely to otherwise cause severe facial deformity. As more experience is gained with this therapy, therapeutic indications and protocols will evolve appropriately.
Avatar n tn Some medications are actually derived from plants. The mechanism of action and effect on the body determines the classification, therefore, laxatives can be synthetic or natural.
Avatar n tn "Mechanism of Action Oxomemazine, a phenothiazine derivative, is a sedating antihistamine" The above information is about all I could find on this drug. If it is used in the US, I have no idea what label it's under. Even if I had been able to find more information, I am not qualified to tell you to either stop or start or change any medications. You need to speak with your doctor or chemist for an answer to your question.
Avatar f tn Hello and welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question. It is always wise when you have an issue that you feel or wonder if it might be heart related to visit your doctor to be examined and discuss. That's the prudent course of action to take. However, heart fluttery feelings are typically medically called palpitations. They are fairly common. They have triggers and it usually is something like stress. Are you under a bit of stress? You also mention Inderal which is a beta blocker.
Avatar f tn , duloxetine) has a combination mechanism of action involving serotonin and norepinephrine making it useful in depression and also neuropathic pain. When a peripheral nerve is injured there is an increase in pain sensitive fibers leading to increase pain recognition. This causes a change in central (i.e., brain/spinal cord) recognition of pain. One major neurotransmitter involved in this is norepinephrine. Cymbalta works to modulate this change.
Avatar f tn I still do get headaches, but they are less frequent and of a markedly lower intensity when I do get them. Instead of 4-5 headaches a week, half of which are of medium intensity, I get about 2 headaches a week which are low intensity. In other words, I can stand it even if the OTC pain reliever doesn't do much. I'm still at a modest dose and can't go up any further.
