Propranolol for akathisia

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for akathisia

inderal

2010625 tn?1329372056 I have akathisia from Abilify but it works for me most of the time so I didn't want to go off it. My pdoc added propranolol, a beta blocker, 60mg a day, that stopped the akathisia almost completely. Propranolol is actually mainly for high blood pressure but has "side effects" that takes care of akathisia and anxiety. The only problem I have from it is orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing) but all I have to do is stop and lean over for a few seconds and it passes.
3122467 tn?1342138836 To deal with it, I take a beta blocker, propranolol, and it works beautifully. Not only does it take care of the akathisia it also treats anxiety. Once i ran out of propranolol because it hadn't arrived from the mail order pharmacy and the akathisia came back so I know two things... I still have it and propranolol stops it.
Avatar n tn Hi- I developed severe akathisia after taking risperdal at night for sleep- it has been over 3 months since I have been off the meds and am suffering terribly. The neurologist I saw put me on xanax and I am up to 2 mg a day- divided throughout the day. As soon as the dose wears off I begin feeling horribly, anxious, more restless. I have been taking the xanax since May- and origionally was on a dose anywhere between .75 a day to maximum 1.
Avatar f tn What's akathisia?
Avatar f tn Then my psychiatrist with experience for 46 years in the mental health field told me to take Benadryl for the akathisia attacks. This worked great for a long time; however eventually it did not work anymore either. Then I discovered from an answer to prayer to take Queen's Delight. Queen's Delight is Royal Jelly, Propolis and Bee Pollen that is freeze dried to have the maximum potency. I get it from www.DurhamsBeeFarm.com. The more you buy the cheaper the price.
Avatar f tn I take propranolol for akathisia. Its primary use is for high blood pressure but it also works for akathisia and anxiety. I haven't found anything that states it causes memory problems. I would suspect the sleeping pills. Memory problems can also be caused by depression. The best thing you can do about it is to tell your psychiatrist was is happening with side effects.
1134609 tn?1269272200 Well, the unfortunate fact of the matter is that the akathisia side effect isn't manageable for me.... Yesterday, I had to use a hefty dose of benzos just to calm down. And believe me, I don't like taking my PRN benzos. I had to take ALL of my PRN medications (in the correct dosages) to finally get back to normal. The akathisia also manifests itself with a bad manic episode as well; this combination has sent me to the hospital three times.
Avatar n tn A med I take for anxiety is propranolol. It is a beta blocker used for high blood pressure, anxiety and akathisia.
Avatar f tn gain and titrating up on Lamictal for obvious mood swings. Idk, Abilify worked well for me with Zoloft for approx 8 years. Good luck to you!
Avatar f tn I take Abilify and have for more than two years. I developed akathisia, a movement disorder that stops when you stop the med. I take propranolol, which is primarily used for high blood pressure and anxiety and also takes care of akathisia. I have no other side effects from Abilify. It has worked well for me in dealing with depression.
1700643 tn?1464846682 Right now I take 15 mg but I have taken as much as 30mg. I did get akathisia from it (restlessness ) but added propranolol which stopped it. Akathisia is a common side effect.
712802 tn?1274645485 My pdoc added propranolol, a beta blocker that lowers blood pressure, decreases anxiety AND takes care of akathisia. The combination of propranolol with the Abilify allows me to continue with the Abilify. We have to remember that every medication has possible side effects and everyone reacts differently regarding side effects. What you experience may be quite different from what everyone has posted.
Avatar n tn m going to see what steps I can get taken in order for it to be mandatory for doctors to tell patients about the possibility of akathisia as well as physical side effects before administering the medicine. Thanks so much for replying to me. I am going to try to do something about this. I had never known what depression feels like but due to this medicine my heart goes out to everyone that has taken it or that has just have issues with akathisia that's not drug induced.
Avatar f tn I take propranolol, a beta blocker, for akathisia and anxiety. It works very well for anxiety. I think you may be having break-through depression and anxiety meaning it is working in spite of the drugs, not because of the drugs.
Avatar n tn The seroquel and risperdal were given for sleeping problems and the prozac for anxiety. Anyhow, about 4 months after the addition of the Risperdal I started feeling extremly restless and like I was having constant abdominal spasms. I stopped all 3 of the meds and have been off of them 2 months now. I saw a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders and she is not sure if I have akathisia or dyskinisia, based on the strange location of the symptom.
Avatar n tn I have suffered from the symptoms of Akathisia for as long as I can remember. This would include childhood to around the age of 8. I am now a 40 year old male. The symptoms have always interfered with my ability to lead a normal life in that I am constantly in a state of agitation.
Avatar n tn sometimes Tenex is also used in conjunction with stimulants to help control ADHD symptoms....first I have heard of inderal (brand name for propranolol) being used but makes sense...Always to remember to ask your doctor any questions about your meds and health care...the only stupid questions are the ones not asked....Also beta blockers are also given to help control migraines to regulate fluxs in BP...not because too high but slight changes can trigger migraines...
574118 tn?1305135284 Hi Colleagues Lately my akathisia increased. I tried to see whether it's due to the AD (stablon) or the seroquel. I found out that all atypical antipsychotics do it. Here a paragraph from the web """ I have schizoaffective disorder. After having taken clozapine/Clozaril for two years, I started to have akathisia. Akathisia makes me feel like I can't sit still, I have to walk around, and I feel like I want to jump out of my skin.
Avatar f tn I have been having this very annoying and scary behavior for the past few days. It all started with me waking up in the middle of the night and as I was trying to fall back asleep, there were words and visions (sometimes scary) just constantly flashing in my head and racing. I don't hear anything. It's just thoughts. Ever since then, when I watch TV, I repeat in my head everything they say.
1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
Avatar m tn I too have had such a bad experience with akathisia that I am unwilling to get treatment for the long-lasting panic attacks I now suffer from. I was given Reglan for nausea and Inapsine for my migraine (why an antipsychotic med should help a migraine I don't understand) during 2 visits 4 days apart to the ER. I felt like God had completely abandoned me and I was going to die and go straight to hell, as well as jump out of my skin! You're not alone.
Avatar f tn I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years. Shrink says very occasional and use of propranolol on top of pindolol should not be a problem but I still have concerns which I will run by my GP. I actually did receive a call from my pharmacy pointing out the risk of a low BP problem. So...I am wondering if anyone has used propranolol or has an educated opinion on both its use in ED and possible interactions.
Avatar m tn I have akathisia and am wondering from the group if the group knows any drug remedies for it -- I have tried quite a few -- please help.
Avatar f tn I know propranolol is used for PTSD...but what should I ask for in the pharmacy and what is the dosage? Are there any serious effect if taken without proper knowledge?
Avatar f tn is there a cure for akathisia as well among others?
Avatar n tn Along with research it is been read that Clonazepam is a treatment for Akathisia (which is obviously another benzodiazepine). I have a doctors appointment soon, whom prescribes me the valium and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to bring this up to him and suggest the switch to this benzo from the valium. The valium is for my spasms (which it works great). The GABA action I get from it must be good due to my lack there of spasms, I hope Klonopin does the same.
Avatar n tn Hi, Thank you for your question. Usually, propranolol (beta blocker) is suggested for prophylactic treatment of migraine. Acute or prompt treatment require over the counter pain killers and triptans. Avoiding the triggering factors of cluster headache might help you in order to prevent its recurrence. Hope it helps.
