Common Questions and Answers about Penlac nail treatment

penlac

Avatar m tn Soon after removing the nail tips, I started noticing my nails on my thumbs started to change colors. I went to the dermatologist and they prescribed Penlac to treat the nail fungus. After using Penlac for a while I noticed that it was not working for me. After that, I went back to the dermatologist and they did a culture and they said it was a fungus.
Avatar n tn I was okay trying to control(possibly) the fungus on my toes and my thumb and index fingernails. Now it needs like what my wife is having(black dot on her thumb) now resembles what I had once upon a time. I don't want her to fight with fungus. I did see a dermatolgist yesterday and she said my toes are likely fungus-related but she had I didn't have enough nail for samples. Prescribed me Penlac(sp?) and asked me to go back when the toenails grow out... I am so confused now.
Avatar f tn The preferred conventional oral treatment is Sporanox pulse therapy daily for a week followed by a three week rest, repeated for three months. A clipped nail sample should be sent for culture before treatment. Expect a 60% to 70% cure rate. It’s unsafe for people with heart disease, may damage the liver, and interacts with other drugs. So your doctor has to watch carefully! Consider tea tree oil, a safe natural over the counter remedy. It’s a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent.
Avatar m tn Toenails are affected more often than fingernails and occurs primarily in adults, most commonly after 60 years of age. Treatment for a fungal nail infection includes using medications, taking steps to prevent the infection from returning, and removing the affected nail. However, treatment does not work for 20% to 25% of people with the condition. It is important to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis by potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation, culture or histology.
Avatar m tn I suggest you to get a potassium hydroxide smear of the nail clipping done and if it comes out negative then get a biopsy of the nail done to rule out any psoriatic nail. Treatment is different for both and is dependent on diagnosis. However treatment of both is difficult and takes time. Treatment of onychomycosis is more difficult because the infection is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach. Moreover full removal of symptoms is slow and may take a year or more.
Avatar f tn what is considered earl treatment, if they never diagnose after first bout of symptoms how can you get early treatment? is a 2nd flare considered early? thats when they say they diagnose after 2 episodes or flares, then mri, etc and diagnoses. is that to late to be considered early?
Avatar n tn Hello, Green nails is due to pseudomonas infection of the nails. The treatment is to trim the nail short every four weeks, don't clean it and wait two to three months. It is also advised to avoid soaking the nail in any sort of water (even if inside gloves) and to thoroughly dry the nail after bathing. If the symptoms persist then specific treatment may be needed.

Avatar n tn Then went on line to a vitamin store and bought three different treatmnts for toe nail fungus. The one thing I used 2-3 times a day was nail repair tea tree oil and I bought oreagano oil caps and opened one of themand put the oil in the nail repair. It worked really well. I have been able to keep it under control. I use this 1 -2 times everyday! I apply it after every shower.
407029 tn?1253992623 have any of you ladies been a lil apprehensive about getting nails done since treatment
Avatar m tn Some blood gushed out and instantly, no pressure, no pain, eventually the nail will fall off and the blackness will fade away - probably take about 6 weeks - the nail is toast anyway, so don't worry about the hole - it will drain for a day or two, then put a bandaid on it.

Avatar f tn and Ketoconazole), as well as an anti-fungal nail polish (Ciclopriox), and also a nail film (Umecta). My nails are still deteriorating (see pictures, taken today...5 months of this). I am fairly certain this began from a bag of pistachios which must have been coated with a dust containing the fungus. Is anyone else suffering this? Does anyone have any advice? Thank you in advance for any help you can send!
Avatar n tn It appears as though both of my big toes have a new nail growing in underneath the old nail. The old Nail is raised up quite a bit compared to the new growth, which is about 1/4". I also can see a line on both nails that appears to be where the new nail is at, and that is about 75% to the end of my toe. The new nail looks totally fine. I'm 25 years old. None of my other toenails are affected. No pain or other symptoms of any kind.
Avatar m tn It is near the location where the pus was oozing and it looks like the nail is detaching from the nail bed.I haven;t seen a dr then i had put some antibiotic powder over it and in about 3 days the infection was gone. Now what has caused this yelow-brown discoloration? Is it like an effect of the infection?Should i see a doctor? Will my nail fall?
483814 tn?1214311480 During TX, four of my nails began to turn dark grey from the outside of the nail in. I was concerned about it but since TX was almost over, thought it better to wait and see if it cleared itself up. It did, however, after three months past TX, I see it springing up on my thumb. At the most, I will, use tea tree oil topically or an herb internally, with antigungal properties. Not much for meds.
Avatar m tn Fungal infection in toe nail needs long term treatment. The nail is the most difficult from where the fungus can be eradicated. You need take anti fungal tablet for at least 9-12 months. The entire nail plate takes 9-12 months to be replaced so you need to take this tablet for long time. No topical drugs only will be effective. Please talk to your physician for this. Wishing you good health.
Avatar m tn I just completed my 12 week Harvoni treatment. One thing that is happening to me, is both big toes are discolored and there is a small amount of pain associated with the toes. This could be totally unrelated to the Harvoni. I am following it up with a pediatrist. Anyone else have anything like this?
