Avatar f tn Hmmm, that's a reaction I've not seen. My doctor told me that I was getting leg cramps at night (possibly) because of low potassium levels. I take potassium tabs twice a day (to balance out the sodium in my diet, (even though I've been good and cut way back on prepared n fast foods). As was suggested, look for foods your mom likes, which are good sources of potassium. Here's one list I found: http://www.weightlossforall.com/potassium-rich-food.
1135275 tn?1586565652 I wouldn't use metamucil because of the additives, and I would never use it regularly because the body gets used to laxatives and doesn't digest well anymore on its own. Gymdandee gave better advice with cholesterol by suggesting oat bran, because for cholesterol what you want is soluble fiber -- metamucil and psyllium are mostly insoluble, for digestion, not for cholesterol reduction. Other good sources of this fiber are beans and rice bran.

Avatar n tn It turns out that two thirds of the cholesterol is made in the liver from saturated fats, and trans fats, So take away animal foods and you are still at risk to produce large amounts of cholesterol These fats are found in many of the vegetarian foods. They contain coconut milk, and other highly satureted fats, which will drive cholesterol levels way up.

Avatar f tn It isn't just about HDL levels. It has become apparent that there is more than one type of LDL. There's a dense heavy tiny LDL, and a larger light LDL. The small dense ones are the ones which get into the artery lining and cause the disease. Looking at diets with high levels of heart disease around the world, the common factor doesn't appear to be fat. It appears to be processed sugars. Soda drinks etc are packed with it, so are ready made meals etc.

Both the niacin and the arginine will help the blood vessels relax and distend, rather than rupturing. Generally the basic dietary adult vitamin supplements have 25% of the daily minimum of K.
