Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin nerve pain

neurontin

Avatar f tn When I just touch very gently, it feels like fiberglass or hundreds of metal splinters or something is in there. My neuro has me on neurontin, 400mg, and I am having carpal tunnel surgery on one hand. The pain is not controlled. What is it and what can I do for relief?
630344 tn?1280104983 I'm taking the generic form, just recently resumed but have used it in the past. Neurontin is Rx-ed for nerve pain as an "off label" use, that it, treating nerve pain is not the function for which it was designed so it's not listed as a use on the manufacturer's label. It is actually an anti-seizure med, but it was found to also reduce neuropathy in patients. It is my understanding that Lyrica works much in the same way, and is a newer medication by the same company.
1146870 tn?1261519635 Check with your doctor, they should be able to give you something for it. Often with nerve pain they'll prescribe something like neurontin or other medications depending on what the cause of the pain is and the type of pain. Accupunture is an alternative for drugs as well.
1310035 tn?1305621642 Neurontin (brand name for gabapentin) helps with nerve pain. It is very commonly used in MS. Another med for this purpose is Lyrica. If one doesn't work or the side efffects are too much, then the other can be tried, but the two are very similar. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Neurotin is chemically similar to the drug Lyrica. Neurontin is also used to treat nerve pain caused by herpes virus or shingles. It can interact with hydrocodone, morphine or naproxen and others. I have taken it but it was not successful in treating my sciatic pain. However others have had relief. I hope this bit of information helps you. If you have additional questions please continue to post. Take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.
1855076 tn?1337115303 I'm just curious if anyone is hearing that Neurontin is being abused? I was given this for nerve pain but couldn't tolerate it as it caused serious slurring of my words to the point people thought I was intoxicated. I also had trouble word-finding on it. But I didn't think it was something anyone abused. (Though I slurred my words, I didn't feel high or intoxicated with it; I sort of felt locked in ... I knew in my head what word I wanted but couldn't get it out.
700212 tn?1240760820 My docter just prescribed me neurontin for what they are calling "nerve" pain. Have any of you ever taken it?...is it good or bad?...Ive heard both and Ive been trying to look it up...but I just started treatment also and I already take enough pills...but if its going to help I willtake it...My right leg has alot of nerve damage and deep scar tissue and it bothers me pretty bad...but for some reason they wont prescribe me pain meds that I can just take when Im in pain...
Avatar m tn I have used Neurontin in the past for nerve pain. But until you find the cause of what is making that nerve pinched, Neurontin will just sort of mask it.
Avatar m tn Hi well I have the same problem too. Is your pain actually from a damaged nerve or a neuropathy ? Or is it that you get pain from turning slightly or almost any wrong move? That is what I call Tweeks, you get tweeked and more pain for about three days to a week. I was on Neurontin and actually have myofascial pain but they thought it may have been a nerve at first. The neurontin didn't do a thing for me.
689327 tn?1240229164 The first thing is to make absolutely certain that the nerve has been decompressed-- if this was an open procedure I guess I should assume the nerve was visualized and there is nothing pinching or pushing against the nerve. Beyond that the only thing I know of would be the 'usual anticonvulsants'-- neurontin in high doses, lyrica, tegretol... sometimes a small amount of an opiate makes a big difference.
Avatar m tn What could you recommend to use for nerve pain other than Lidocaine patches. I have been using the patches with wonderful relief for 2 years and now Aetna says they will only cover them for post hepatice neuralgia. They even denied my doctor's appeal. Two years ago I had laminectomies of L2,L3,L4,L5,S1 after many ESIs and SJIs. I also have my sciatic nerve running through my piraformis muscle. The surgery got rid of most of my back and sciatic pain and I no longer use a walker or wheelchair.
772218 tn?1249131067 I'm not sure what's causing the pain but I have nerve damage in my legs the doc has me on gabapentin (neurontin) I can't say that it helps a lot but it takes some of the pain away. Maybe you should consult your doc and see if it would help you.
Avatar n tn it will feel like a vise grip is on there...and twisting it...I take Neurontin...just started a week ago.. no help with this type of pain though.... I will try a heating bead pad...that you put in the micro wave...and warm it up..it helps temp... and my hubby will massage my legs for me.. sorry, my Dr says he doesn't know what else to try... Tyl 3s don't seem to help...but they do put me to sleep easier.. take care and let us know how your doing.
Avatar f tn I was on neurontin for nerve pain following a spinal injury and prior to surgery. It relieved my nerve pain and the side effects lessened after a few days. I didn't take the full dose though, and I stopped taking it after the surgery.
Avatar f tn I took Neurontin for nerve problems also but it made me nutty so the doctor gave me Gabitril. I don't know if it can help in your situation but it would be worth asking a doctor about. Hope that helps.
Avatar f tn News top ten neurology hospitals in the country, which includes the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Methodist Hospital in Houston, UCLA, and Boston Mass. Neurontin and Lyrica help nerve pain, I take the latter, but it's awfully potent.
Avatar n tn Traumatic brachial neuropathy is a painful condition and in some patients even after painkiller medicines pain is present. You should consult a pain management clinic with anaesthesiologist for TCNS therapy and epidural analgesia.visit this website also : http://www.drnathbrachialplexus.
Avatar f tn I have had many of your experiences. Dizziness with some falls. (My dizziness was not the spinning type, but more of "rocking on a boat in a hurricane" type.) There was a thought that I might have MS, but there were no plaques on my brain. Did have some neuropathies, but they were a small patch on my right side of my face near my hairline and a larger area on my leg. Now that I have gotten and stayed in the normal range with the VDD.
1943759 tn?1324045251 If he doesnt want opiates but can get scripts then neurontin might help. It helps with nerve pain. I take it as I have nerve damage in my spine. I also take oxycodone and the 2 of them work well together for me.
Avatar f tn I think every one reacts differently to medications. What works very well for one person may not work at all for another. I beleive every post here. I too Neurontin for awhile also. It didn't make me sleepy. In fact it did nothing at all for me. My mother takes it with good relief from nerve entrapment, although it effect her memory. I had to play with the dose for sometime (with MD's approval) to get it right. She does very well on it now.
Avatar f tn I have persistent, severe nerve pain. It's left-side burning, electric-like pain, mostly from shoulder down left arm, but can be on face, head, hip, leg. Also deep stabbing pain around left shoulder blade and under left ribs. Sometimes it's a 10+. Ranges from 4 to 10. Dx with RRMS in '97, very active 10+ years after, but on disability since 2008. Take Rebif, on brk from Tysabri.
Avatar n tn Have you tried asking for Neurontin or Lyrica? These are anticonvulsants frequently prescribed for nerve pain. Otherwise perhaps a visit to a doctor specializing in Pain Management will be helpful.. I too have doctors that won't prescribe pain killers but will prescribe the above mentioned meds. Good Luck.
