Common Questions and Answers about Morphine and the elderly

Avatar n tn I have heard that Suboxone could be used for pain in the elderly population to take the place of the many pain medications they may be on. such as morphine and Oxycodone Does anyone do this and how would I approach my Mother's Doctor about this. .
Avatar n tn t understand is when you recieve the medication, the Pharmacist goes over the drug with you and you should have spoke up at that point. Somebody knew when picking up the medication that the dose was wrong. I guess it was an error on both ends. I don't mean to sound harsh but that's the reality of it. It is in my opinion that you take action on the Pharmacy where the problem started and then to the person responsible for picking up and giving her the meds.
Avatar f tn I've been tapering down my medications (and made some great progress.) So far got off the Fentanyl 75 mcg., oxycodone 40 to 60 mg. every four hours. I had some pretty moderate withdrawals going off the Fentanyl and oxycodone. Nothing like cold turkey, but difficult nonetheless. I was switched over to morphine ER 30 mg. in the morning and 30 mg. at night. I already dropped to 15 mg. at night. I'm also supposed to take 15 mg.
Avatar f tn We took him to the hospital and they gave him morphine and the hallucinations were back. I swore that the morphine was making him hallucinate but the doctors said it was dementia. We took him home and hospice kept upping the dose of the morphine. Finally he got so bad we couldn't take care of him at home. He went to the hospital and finally a nursing facility for 11 days. He died there after his body shutdown. He wouldn't eat or drink anything.
Avatar f tn It is not uncommon for patients to develop an obstruction that requires a bowel resection and a temporary colostomy. This can be very dangerous in the elderly. Naltrexone will restore movement, but will cause immediate painful withdrawal symptoms. Fibre may make this worse. Drinking more fluids helps, but the answer is to have a hiatus nor lower the dose of opiates.
Avatar f tn I have been prescribed opiates since 2002. For severe neuropathy, 9 back surgery and then in 08 hubby and I were in a horrific car accident back in 08... I crushed my ankle, punctured a lung and broke 11 ribs...... I was on 100 mcg fentanyl patches for over 4 years ... they were working Any more, then I was put on 200 mgs morphine sulfate daily... ( 100 mgs every 12 hours). I did that for about 6 months and then had to become sole caregiver to my elderly father who had Alzheimer's...
Avatar f tn m not going back on the percs- just tapering from the morph right now and will be done with this sh*$ after that. So the question is- is it all about the same as far as w/d time or are some more difficult and last longer? I know when I've taken vic's- they were (for me), like taking an advil. So weak- I guess because my DOC was so much stronger and my tolerance was higher than many peoples. But I'm just curious if ther's some sort of order (difficult to most difficult)?
Avatar m tn You might get some better information on this issue from the Ask a Pharmacist board here at Med Help. Just click on the Forums icon at the top of the page and look on the right side of the new screen under the "A"s to post your question. Certainly you need to make your dad's doctor(s) aware of what is happening.
Avatar f tn My Mom has serious back pain and is prescribed 60 15 mg morphine pills and 30 100 mg morphine pills each month yet she still suffers from chronic back pain. A Nurse told me she would probably be better off taking 2 20 mg pills and 1 80 mg pill of oxycontin each day instead. Is oxycontin a more effective pain reliever than morphine? My Mom isn't an addict and does not abuse them beyond what is prescribed to her. Please advise me.
557111 tn?1219712047 I suspect your Dr is right, though about the morphine. When your surgery is done and the initial pain subsides, then attack this problem.
Avatar f tn Hi. 5'10" Gent, and brand spankin newbie to this site. i just turned 56 in April. In my journal August. 12, 2013, I recorded wgt. 247.5 lb, BP 157/101, severe depression & anxiety with heaart palpitations and mid-nightime panic attacks. Also using CPAP setting of 14cm for severe sleep apnea, and suffered almost daily migraines. Plus my triglicerides were, as my dr put it, "through the roof!
Avatar m tn The answer, is yes. The elderly can be very sensitive to psychotropic medications, causing all kinds of side effects and adverse reactions. If the "screaming" you are observing is new since the med(s) were started, then a call to the prescribing doc is in order ASAP.
Avatar m tn A home health nurse visited for 2 weeks and stopped. She was given the Diltiazem, Lasix and Seroquel while in the hospital and has been on them about 2 months. Her doctor wants her to stay on the Seroquel indefinitely and hasn't really been concerned about monitoring her. I plan to take her to another doctor soon.
Avatar n tn My mother lives in Florida she takes Morphine as well as other pain meds. Her Morphine was stolen. She is on Medicaid and states away from me. She took 5 pills a day.
Avatar f tn If a person is young (ish) and otherwise healthy and gets a UTI, that person will feel the normal symptoms of it, but someone who is elderly (although someone does not necessarily have to be 'elderly' to have Alzheimers), and suffers from dementia or Alzheimers, will have a much different experience. I went through this with my mother and currently, my MIL, and it is absolutely true. Below is a short excerpt taken from the link I will share below...
Avatar m tn hi you all,.ibkleen, i was just a bit frustrated about some of the things you said about my last post.i just didn't (&don't) feel you know enough about me,my history&goals to say what you said.NOW, the point of the matter is that ihooked up with some methadone to ween off oc's & morphine. i am now taking 10-20mg. of m-done and want to also detox from the m-done.i went a little over 36hrs.
Avatar f tn I have been taking a 50 mcg patch every 3 days for about a year...unfortunately, we got new insurance...I was paying $15 before, but the past few months its been like $350 each time, which we obviously can't afford. 3 days ago I took my last patch and I'm scared to death...I have to work the next few days! My dr. gave me some morphine to help with the transition...will that help? I'm worried about my pain levels, obviously, but even more worried about the withdrawal symptoms...
Avatar f tn t familiar with my conditions at all! Oh, and to top off all the stress? The morphine given to me bottomed out my blood pressure and I was within minutes of coding before they gave me Narcan to reverse the Morphine!
Avatar f tn If the oxy stopped working as well, i switched to morphine at the same strength and vice versa. I have been only on MSContin and Dilaudid for 5 years now. I lowered my pain medications drastically over a matter of about 10 years.
Avatar m tn Normally the anxiety resolves itself within a few weeks but this time it has persisted and continues on. Could it be caused by the morphine? This is my thought but the pharmacist said he didn't think it was. Also my doctor is suggesting 8 tylenol a day to replace the morphine. I am so skeptical of it being adequate though I know I can manage less than the 60 mg of morphine now. What are your thoughts?
Avatar f tn 00am. I never heard of a person sleeping like this, he will get up and go to the bath room but go right back to bed. He has mild parkinson's disease, and sick sinus syndrome with a pacemaker, mild to moderate dementia, and other than that no other problems. No renal failure.
Avatar m tn My Mother is 92 slim 126 pounds she feels lightheaded and dizzy in the Mornings after taking her metformin but fells better as the day wears on . I believe the metformin lowers her blood sugars in the morning causing her to feel dizzy and spacy.
Avatar f tn I posted earlier explaining my situation, but I am having a hard time figuring out what the withdrawals from morphine are. If you are reading this and you know about morphine or have been on it please help me. You can read my other post to find out the doses I have been on and why I am having to go off the meds.
Avatar n tn and work with stroke victims , Look up water shed strokes...
Avatar f tn After the 2nd time my Nurse called the Anethetist and this time as the Nurse administered the Morphine before it was even half in I was vomiting. He asked me what I'd had before for my other surgeries (Hip implant) and I told him Demerol and he immediately pulled me off of it and told me to NEVER have it again as I am quite allergic to it. He ordered Demerol for me for the rest of my stay. If I were you I'd be asking for something OTHER than Morphine.
709686 tn?1277432159 On Friday I began to get the cold sweats and pounding heart beat and today they come and go. I can be sitting in the bed and all of a sudden I begin to sweat for no reason. I'm also extremely constipated. I asked the doctor if my sweats and heart beat could be some kind of detox symptom and he said absolutely not. What do you think? Could these symptoms be my body detoxing from the dilauded and morphine?
