Avatar m tn My mom is dying from anapalastic thyroid cancer. She has been on a morphine pump for a little over a week. She stopped food and water intake a couple of days ago. Her kidneys and liver have started to fail. (this we know from information from our wonderful hospice nurse) I was wondering how long on average a person will survive once their food and water intake stops?

Avatar n tn Most of the bile acids are then reabsorbed in the intestine and go back to the liver for reprocessing and recycling. In cholestasis, therefore, the bile acids back up from the liver, accumulate in the blood, and, for some years, were presumed to be the cause of the itching. Modern studies, however, have just about refuted the notion that the itching in PBC and other cholestatic liver diseases is caused by bile acids.
Avatar f tn Morphine must be okay for the liver because that's what they used when I was in the ICU following my liver transplant. Be VERY careful with morphine. I was on it for 7 days and went wacky with hallucinations of all kinds.
Avatar n tn He is also on a internal pain pump which dispenses morphine for the original malady of chronic pain. He is really out of it. Like he has dementia. We dont know what to do. He is too weak for interferon and will probably need a liver sooner or later. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing or know what I am talking about.
Avatar n tn He is scheduled for an ultrasound of the thyroid to check for cancer but the doctor told him that his thyroid was not producing anything. He had colon cancer in 1993 and 1/3 of is colon was removed and there has been no reoccurance so hopefully there are no other gastro-intestinal problems. I will ask the doctor to check his cortisol levels. You did not mention the morphine, so do you not see that as a possible reason for the weight loss?
Avatar n tn ( ) sorry for the daft description, but that is how she describes the pain, like something munching away. C. She has been diagnosed with scirrosis of the liver (to extent of ehich is yet to be determined) but does this mean my mother will have a suffer a prolonged, painful decline without the help of any pain relief (as morphine and codiene etc...are damaging to an already damaged liver) this is a question for my knowledge only as i need preparing for what is to come.
Avatar f tn My mother has been diagnosed with liver cancer from hepatitis C. Hospice has come in and she is now sleeping a lot and a cathereter put in. Her appetite has detirioated and her urine is still normal color. She is not jaundice as of yet but does slur her words occasionally and gets confused. How long do I have? I know there is no real answer but are we talking months, weeks or days?
Avatar f tn My mother died of liver cancer due to Hepatitis C and cirrhosis. The biggest thing we were able to do for her was to be there and to make sure she was comfortable. Her doctor gave her morphine as needed to where she was the one who decided how much to take and how often. She was able to stay home because she had a directive in place stating that she only wanted comfort measures. After a fall, she was moved to hospice where she was able to die in peace.
Avatar n tn if a patient is presecribed 15 mg but is given 30 mg of morphine sulfate IR tablets, would this cause an earlier death in a liver cancer patient? My aunt was given 8 - 10 months and the pharmacy gave the wrong dosage, she died in 5 days. Should I question this?
557111 tn?1219712047 butit is very addictive...most people on morphine are on it for pain and not for the high...of course exceptions to every rule...but it is a strong narcotic and this does not seem like a step forward in getting u clean from opiates...like avis asked...what is the pain and surgery related to? if it is lefe threatening cancer or something then choices may be different..
Avatar f tn Anti-inflammatorys are bad for your liver. I take hyrocodone with ibf for my back pain. My friends dr. sent her to a pain management specialist.
Avatar n tn I am trying to get her to have her lithium levels checked but she thinks she is fine (part of the disease), she is not sleeping well and not resting, physically pushing herself which makes swelling and pain from RA worse (had to stop Enbrel, Arava and Methotrexate to begin chemo). Still using patch and morphine tabs for pain, ambien for sleep and there are more meds.
Avatar f tn Hi my motherinlaw has finished chemo in August and they are not giving anymore she is receiving pallative care and the district nurses are going to see her once a month waiting on Marie Curie nurses getting back to us.
Avatar m tn He said I tested positive for morphine and negative for xanax. I take 1-2 ,25mg xanax a day-prescribed by him for anxiety. He referred me to pain management and that Dr prescribed me 15 mg Amrix and 50 mg Nucynta ER a day. He said the morphine is not from the Nucynta and that I must not be taking the Xanax or Nucynta that neither one of them showed up. I am not taking Morphine of any kind. I took a Xanax and a Nucynta 3 hours before this appointment.
Avatar n tn I recently completed chemotherapy and radiotherapy for stage 4 breast cancer that had spread to my lung. The chemotherapy cleared the tumour from my lung and shrunk the original tumour considerably. Now my prognosis is very good. The chemotherapy was no where near as bad as I thought and the radiotherapy was a walk in the park and just like having a bit of sunburn. Although the chemotherapy is not pleasant , I think my positive outlook did not let me get very sick from it.
Avatar f tn But a hepatologist can help her manage her serious symptoms and assess her for the possibility of a liver transplant. Your mom will need a lot of support right now, as she is probably too weak and confused to make sure that she eats properly, has enough bowel movements, and takes her meds. Keep us posted on how your mom is doing.
Avatar n tn Another question for you guys..The liver cancer issue. If these numbers stay low and never go back to antigen positive and never skyrocket (viral load) should liver cancer always be in the back of my mind like it is all the time??
Avatar f tn Thanks! I have read that thread before but my doc tells me ibprofen and codine are bad for the liver? Idk. And no I have not had a liver biopsy yet. I'm going to bring that up to him at my next appt this week. I'm just so confused on what to bring up to him?
Avatar f tn Drugs should not be used, sometimes morphine is used in cancer patients with severe pain to relieve the pain, which is given on the basis of a prescription. Drug dependence, tolerance and gross nervous system side effects are the common reasons why drugs are not used. Take care!

Avatar m tn Hi all... my mom was diagnosed the Thanksgiving before last with colon cancer that had spread to her liver. They gave her 6 - 12 months to live. We were devastated. She had already battled breast cancer twice. Needless to say, the cancer spread to her bones. Around the beginning of this past November, the doctors told her they were discontinuing treatment because it was no longer doing anything for her.
Avatar m tn He is a member of AACR-American Association for Cancer Research, CRI-Cancer Research Institute and WCR-Worldwide Cancer Research which is a charity that funds research projects into any type of cancer, anywhere in the world. Some of their recent research projects are focused on herbal therapy, less of chemo and some recent developments have been discovered. I'm sure your case would fit in perfectly cos my mom was a beneficiary. Do not be discouraged by the negatives.
