Avatar f tn For some people, Metformin can cause glucose [blood sugar] levels to drop too low [hypoglycemia]. This often times happens when Metformin is combined with other diabetes medications, and is more common in elderly folks or folks with internal organ issues. Low glucose also can happen when fasting before surgery or a blood test/s and after lengthy exercise. You should notify your doctor of your low glucose experiences ASAP. Ask your doctor how to adjust your Metformin dose if needed.
Avatar n tn Probably as soon add you get up and before eating. Remember to eat low carb and avoid Sugars, which will also help in blood sugar management.
Avatar n tn I tested my blood sugar this morning and it was 105. Would you say this is out of the normal range. I had blood work done about a month ago when I had my annual physical and my sugar level came back at 109. My doctor didn't seem to alarmed.
Avatar n tn Hello, Definitely your blood sugar levels are raised. First of you need to start exercising and do brisk wals for atleast 45 min per day. A diet that includes fruits, vegetables, fiber-containing foods, and low-fat milk is advised. Consumption of foods with a low glucose levels appears to reduce postprandial glucose rise and improve glycemic control. Reduced calorie and nonnutritive sweeteners are useful.
Avatar n tn I also have insulin resistance, but showing signs of low blood sugar. When my blood sugar was lasted tested 20minutes after eating protein and carbs by blood sugar level was 112. I get very bad headaches if I do not eat every 2.5hrs and suffer from blurred vision and dry mouth and feel like passing out. Once I eat or drink (nonwater) anything I feel better for about 15minutes then I feel very tired and get a pressure type headache with dizziness.
325405 tn?1262290178 Haven't yet been in to see an endocrinologist or a dietary person to talk blood sugar levels and diet. Am having problems dealing with my insurance company who won't even cover my stupid testing strips. They basically are $1 a strip. Expensive. I had gestational diabetes several years ago (gestational diabetes was covered 100% for supplies and visits), so I am aware of how to do all the blood testing and have been doign fine about that.
Avatar n tn Good afternoon. I have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes for about 5 years now...I think I had the problem well before that but I had a doctor who would never run the test (just lose some weight, etc). I'm not very good about keeping my levels under control because I get so discouraged that I just give up from time to time.

944631 tn?1246280052 if you are NOT a diabetic, ask the doctor why he has put you on metformin!! Metformin will lower your blood sugar and you need to be informed about possible hypoglycemic events...call your doctor now! Please let us know what he says...
Avatar n tn I think the sugar is stimulating an overagressive insulin response, which in turn drives your blood sugar low. Metformin doesn't work directly on insulin levels, instead it makes your blood cells more senstive to the insulin that is circulating. I think best approach is reguar healthy (fat, protein, and small amoutn of carbs) meals and snacks and continuing to avoid sugar. What are your 2 hours post eating levels?
Avatar n tn Hi, Normal blood sugar levels are in the 70 - 120 range. This is not low. It would mean that metformin is working. I assume that the result from your Dr at 6.3 was before the metformin. Now, with the metformin, your levels have become closer to normal. Note: totally normal hba1c will be < 5.0.
714128 tn?1249136386 Well after I got off the phone with the nurse I called the pharmacy who said my symptoms do sound like low blood sugar and that metformin can definitly effect your blood sugar. Of course the pharmacy told me they couldnt tell me not to take the medicine or even what I should do and my doctor wasnt going to be back until Monday. Well I took the medice on Friday as always and felt awful and then Saturday I didnt take it at all and felt amazing!
Avatar n tn About two weeks ago I had another blood sugar test and the test indicated my sugar went down with taking a quarter of the Metformin so I do not know if at times my blood sugar just spikes or if that small dose had any effect. The Enalapril is to regulate liver enzymes but I'm not sure. I wish I'd pay more attention to my health information. Anyway I really did not take the Enalapril because I wanted to see what the Metformin alone would do.
Avatar f tn According to the MedHelp drug page on metformin, alcohol lowers blood sugar and may increase the risk of lactic acidosis while you are taking this medicine. Here's the link: http://www.medhelp.org/drugs/metformin/show/4596 You'll see this under interactions.
Avatar f tn Decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver. Increasing the amount of sugar absorbed by muscle cells and decreasing the body's resistance to insulin (insulin resistance). When blood sugar is lower, less insulin is needed, so the body makes less insulin. And when insulin is lower, the body produces a lower level of androgens.
Avatar f tn salad, grilled fajita chicken, small amounts of cheese and sour cream, 3 oz guacamole, 2 chicken flautas. Took my blood sugar and it was 67. What does this mean?
Avatar n tn t have the HBP (borderline), but with weight loss, I was able to put my C-PAP in the closet, get off oxygen 24/7 (I also have COPD), reduce my daily puffs on my inhalers, and reduce my diabetes meds from 2000 mg metformin and 20 mg gliburide daily to 500 mg metformin and no gliburide, and get my BP to very acceptable rates for my age (61). When you decide to get started, ask your doc to set you up for a diabetes education class or a session with a diabetes educator.
Avatar n tn m no doctor but I have never heard of multi dosage of Metformin ER, as the ER stands for Extended Release, works for 24 hrs.Too much can cause dangerously low blood sugar [hypoglycemia]. It also depends on your doctor. If he/she Rx'd 1000mg in AM and 1000 mg in PM that is the dose to follow as he/she has knowledge of your medical history/records, not us or anyone on the Internet. Splitting and/or adjusting dosage without first discussing with your doctor is ill advised.
Avatar f tn When you first begin taking metformin, your blood glucose will begin to lower below what your accustomed to. Your body may be reacting as if you have low blood sugar symptoms. If this is the case, you will begin feeling much better in a few days.
Avatar n tn My blood sugar is very high. I was taking Medformin but it started to give trouble. My blood sugar is higher before i eat then it is 20 minutes after. today it was 482 before and 299 after?
Avatar m tn 5 all normal and they get better if I drink more sugar drinks OR if I am on metformin. Metformin doesnt lower them any further. It just helps with the resistance. Thanks for answering. I will check with the doctor.
Icecream The regimen may be aggressive, but not uncommon for a newly diagnosed patient. I do not know what your baseline lab values were (A1c, fasting blood sugars, etc..) But nearly all newly diagnosed patients start oral medications right away and some physicians are more aggressive than others because it is important to get diabetes under control as soon as possible to reduce risk of long term complications.
Avatar m tn Cereals are high in simple carbohydrates. Carbs raise blood sugar levels like sugar does. No sugar added ice cream means no sugar added to the existing sugar which is pretty high in the first place. Read all nutrition labels carefully. Carb sugars are listed in grams, a cooking measure. Every 7 grams equals one HEAPING Tablespoon of sugar.
225237 tn?1333138999 I do take a low dose of lisinopril which keeps my bp regulated, Metformin Er for the pre-diabetic which is under control and I have not taken anything for the cholesterol (it scares me to death) My cholesterol was total 227; tri 163; hdl 38; ldl 161 and vldl 33. My problem is I don't think my cholesterol is that bad and she didn't give me a chance to get it down with exercise before prescribing me medication!
