Avatar f tn DGL stands for deglycyrrhizinated licorice (don't quote me on spelling here). It removes the part of licorice, long known for its antibiotic properties but also for repairing the colon lining, that can elevate blood pressure in susceptible individuals. It's usually sold in chewed tablets, which is how I would take it. The pharmaceutical products for IBS as well as for most digestive problems tend to work at first but then produce a rebound effect.
446049 tn?1649005835 Cholestyramine is indeed used to treat chronic diarrhea. Cholestyramine is a bile acid sequestrant and does work on IBS-D as well. Sometimes in medicine, they stumble upon things that just work. This is the case here. https://www.verywellhealth.com/cholestyramine-overview-1944663 How is your friend doing now?
Avatar m tn I was going to say much the same thing as what that link is referring to. Many of us actually have Celiac, even though we might test negative for Celiac. I test negative for it, but there is absolutely no doubt that I still don't tolerate gluten and casein. Obviously, I do not live my life according to the negative blood test. I would be so much sicker if I did that. Another thing to look at is Leaky Gut Syndrome. Natural medicine is better suited for this one.
409410 tn?1251072712 I am an IBS sufferer for many years. It seems like yours is IBS-D and not C-constipation. Doctors didn't try any medications? IBS is a tough one to treat but there are ways to address them. I tried the medicine DICETEL when I was in Canada and still take it when I need. It is not available in U.S and a prescription medicine. You can get the prescription from any doctor and get it from an online store in Canada.
Avatar m tn Try to look for integrative medicine whenever you can when you have to see a conventional doctor, because natural medicine is key for helping things like IBS even more than conventional medicine. One kind of medicine is not necessarily better than the other in all things, and the thing is both have their place. This is why integrative medicine is a helpful meld of the two.
Avatar n tn ⁃ Not followed by any chiropractic nor professional healthcare ⁃ No recent surgery The study would include one free osteopathic treatment per week for one month followed by one treatment every 2 weeks for 2 months in aim to decrease the symptoms caused by IBS. The study will take place in 2 different clinics (one in Ewell east and the other one in Kingston university Penrhyn Road campus) regarding your location and facilities.

Avatar n tn Hi - I have been unwell for 5 years, been diagnosed with various things just wondering if all related. Symtoms are abdominal pain (moderate to severe), nausea, diarrea, joint pain, headaches, weight loss, chronic fatigue, heart burn, chest pain to name a few. Diagnosed with raynaud's, sponylolysis, arthritis, rosacea, hiatal hernia. Have a history or ovarian cysts. Still going through testing for chron's colitis.
Avatar f tn Hi, Bloating is one of the worst symptoms for ibs and conventional medicine doesn't have any great drugs to treat this symptom, at least yet. But, there's something called Enteric coated peppermint oil that has been gaining some decent evidence and can really help with the bloating and especially the pain. It's important to get the enteric coated stuff, not the peppermint oil, so it doesn't get destroyed by your stomach acid. let me know if it helps!
Avatar f tn I'm 19 and have had IBS for atleast 2 years now, all started when my Anxiety got worse. The last couple of months i've been suffering from on and off constipation, which is obviously not very plesant. But i've started to notice when i am constipated i get left lower spasm type pain where my colon/rectum is. I had it really bad for a while last night, i hadn't been to the toilet for atleast 3-4 days, fortunately i had a bowel movement today.
2300915 tn?1339578207 So, when I got off the medicine, the symptoms of IBS went away, altho I still have problems with IBS on occasion. Recently I have had to cut in half a capsule with medicine powder in it, and it'll create a similar situation as the other one did, as it too is a harsh drug. But this is all just my experience.
787768 tn?1236565876 t have psyllium, which will often produce gas and irritates GERD for me and for other people, too. Benefiber is supposed to be good for some people. I've been using flaxseed meal for my fiber and it has proven to be a good source. So, I would definitely stop the yogurt, because it seems to be causing you distress, rather than helping. It isn't for everyone. Too bad, because I like yogurt, too, but I'm one of those that would be affected the same way as you are.
Avatar m tn I have had IBS for many, many years. I have found that when I have diarrhea, the most useful over the counter drug is Immodian AD. When I'm constipated, I use fiber additives to protein drinks and that usually gets things moving. Chron's disease can be diagnosed after years of suffering from IBS. Not all IBS patient's develop Chron's, but the dietary suggestions for Chron's patients can be very helpful for those of us with IBS.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the gastroenterology community! I would say that you do have IBS. Just because you tried a medicine for IBS and it didn't work doesn't mean it isn't IBS. I don't know what medication you tried, but most medications you need to try for longer than 14 days to know if they work. Also, IBS can be affected by anxiety/nervousness. I would recommend talking to your doctor and maybe trying some anti-anxiety medicines or seeing a therapist.
Avatar f tn Does IBS cause hair loss? I've had IBS for about 1 year 1/2 and have been loosing a lot of hair for the past year. I lost about 30 pounds quickly due to sudden diet change. Is it due to my diet? weight loss? IBS? How can i find out what the exact problem is so I can fix it? i've had test done with a dermatoligist & they are all normal.
Avatar n tn I was given a medicine, hyoscyamine, which was very good for my IBS. I still take it occasionally, for it still acts up sometimes. I am sorry she has had to deal with this for so long. I think perhaps the people who ordered her hemorrhoid surgery should be contacted, to find out if perhaps one of the risks of that procedure could cause an IBS type problem, and maybe they will know what to do about it.
270554 tn?1289511647 I been off it for 2 days but only took it for 3 will these symptoms go away soon? I also take protonix for gerd and ibs. I need some input I never felt so miserable before and I was in the hospital a lot in september. Please comment....
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with IBS-D for two and half yrs. Have seen a GI doctor and had all the blood tests, stool smaples, CT scan, colonoscopy, and upper GI scope. I have frequent flair ups even on a bland diet and doing yoga and on amitropoline 20mlg. a bedtime. I think after researching- I got my symtoms from several courses of Accutane medicine. Which they have pulled from the market.
Avatar f tn You're absolutely right that it's not helpful for doctors to be so dismissive of IBS. I've had the same experience myself. This is why I tell people that the integrative approach to problems like IBS are the most helpful. I didn't get a lot of help with conventional medicine with my IBS. I found naturopathic medicine to be the most helpful approach to IBS. I don't write off conventional medicine entirely, like some people do, though.
Avatar f tn I have found that integrative medicine works best for IBS. I still have to take the antispasmodic medication, which is the conventional medicine, but I've gotten more help by combining this with the natural medicine. Gastro doctors always say to use Metamucil or Citracel or Benefiber. Well, Metamucil and Citracel are both based on flavored psyllium powder. I can't take these fibers because they irritate my GERD.
Avatar f tn Here we go. I have been diagnosed with IBS, but the only time I have had problems for 20 years were after certain meals I would dump and if I was up and active after 2am without eating anything then I would wake up at 4-5am having stomach spasms and bowel movements. Sometime diarrhea, sometimes normal. Now for the past 3 months I have been waking up at 4-5am 6 night of every week with spasms and having to have a bowel movement-diarrhea or normal-that lasts for at least 2 hours.
