Prometrium is the same progesterone as that which the ovary makes - so it is 'natural'. It is probably safe to take throughout the first trimester. There are some researchers who believe that there might be a very small increase in the risk of a birth defect in boy babies called hypospadias - with hypospadias the urethral opening is on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip or end.
My friend mhv ported this earlier. Any thoughts on that. I have always wondered if the suppositories affect the eggs and she thinks that prometrium caps are better. Any thoughts about this ladies?
Hey girls ~ was told yesterday that having Prometrium prescribed as a suppository was ludicrous ~ that Crinone Gel is mega better and sticks as opposed to the Prometrium which just drips out "because it was made to be taken orally ~ not vaginally ~ and anyone who suggests it is just playing with being a Fertilization Specialist"....
I was on crinone (vaginal) and prometrium during my first pregnancy (IVF), and on prometrium only the second time around (natural pregnancy). Best wishes for the remainder of your pregnancy!
Progesterone above 20 is great! Your levels will fluctuate throughout the day so it is possible that the "drop" was just that your progesterone was low at that particular time of the blood draw.
There's no harm in taking the supplements (I'd do oral supplements, aka Prometrium, as opposed to suppositories since your prog. is above 20) if it helps to ease your mind. You'll have to stop taking them by week 10-12.
The pattern was the same in all three case, lower progesterone levels. After the first miscarriage , I was asked to take baby aspirin and prometrium with the subsequent pregnancy. I anyway miscarried. I was referred to a reproductive endocrinologist. He checked for genetic disorders in both me and my husband. He did the clomid challenge test , checked for abnormalities in the uterine wall , checked thyroid level , blood sugar. Everything came back normal.
ve been taking prometrium vaginally twice daily for 13 days now (started the day after my IUI) and on day 10, I started noticing a headache, a dull gnawing sensation on both sides of my head. It is day 14 of prometrium now (CD32) and I am still feeling this. If I bend over to pick up something it hurts even more.

She just says that the doctor is going to proscribe me prometrium.. So I research the medicine and I have mix feelings about it because it has only been used on a few pregnant humans but they have tested it on animals and there fetus had no problems. OK 1. IM 6 WEEKS 2. THOSE ANSWERS ABOUT THE MEDICINE WAS NOT reassuring. .. Has anyone had low progesterone and what did you do?
What I read was that synthetic progesterone is what is not safe during pregnancy but prometrium is the natural form and it is safe for pregnant women. (My dh is a pharmacist and thinks they just put those stickers on the bottle to cover themselves) My RE said I could quit the prometrium at 8 weeks but I was paranoid and kept taking it until 10 weeks with no problems whatsoever. I have 3 frozen embryos. I am scheduled for FET this month. I have done 2 IVF's in the past resulting in a singleton and twins. I also have one child with no ART (my youngest). I REALLY do not want to take any meds if possible, as I know that my body will sustain a pregnancy with no assistance. I've already refused the water u/s because my insurance will not pay for these things, and my RE is getting kind of testy with me.
Tabatha- definitely concerning! And I would definitely give the doctor a call again because something is going on. I am not a doctor so I can only take a guess but they might have to actually get in there (maybe vaginal sonogram first, maybe laproscopy, maybe even a D&C in case tissue is leftover causing infection which can lead to sepsis and is life-threatening). So I would call first thing Monday or Tuesday if they're closed on Monday due to the holiday. You definitely should be seen.
her instructions for the prometrium is to take on cycle day 16 and continue to take until a cycle comes. I stopped taking the prometrium th week before I called her. On th 23, I was told that I didn't ovulated at all. Could you explain your intake on the prometrium process to me so I could have a better understanding how it works. Thank you.
Also, I am going to try this month adding natural progesterone cream to the mix starting 2 days post ovulation. There is alot of information about that on the net. My RE also jump started follicle growthy for me (which for me didn't work, but might for you) with either menopur/clomid or menopur/femara, and I got as many as four follicles in a month.
