560501 tn?1383612740 Earlier Phase 2 studies showed that treatment with alemtuzumab reduced the accumulation of disability and the frequency of relapses in people with early relapsing-remitting MS, compared to Rebif® (interferon-beta-1a-rebif/index.aspx, interferon beta-1a, EMD Serono, Inc. and Pfizer, Inc.). (New England Journal of Medicine 2008 359;17:30-45) Rebif is a registered trademark of EMD Serono, Inc. and Pfizer, Inc. http://www.nationalmssociety.org/news/news-detail/index.aspx?
Avatar f tn ) Pharmacokinetics The pharmacokinetics of Rebif® (interferon beta-1a) in people with multiple sclerosis have not been evaluated. In healthy volunteer subjects, a single subcutaneous (sc) injection of 60 mcg of Rebif® (liquid formulation) resulted in a peak serum concentration (Cmax) of 5.1 ± 1.7 IU/mL (mean ± SD), with a median time of peak serum concentration (Tmax) of 16 hours.
Avatar n tn You are taking rebif, which is interferon beta-1a used for relapsing MS. you could be suffering from jaw muscle spasms causing tongue and lip bites. You may be experiencing numbness in the tongue, a common symptom of multiple sclerosis per se. Review with your neurologist if your disease spectrum has changed and for these newer symptoms. He might like to add some muscle relaxant like tizanidine, baclofen or carbamazepine. You are welcome with any further clarifications. God bless.
2112931 tn?1335098402 News article confused me, because interferon beta-1a is available in the U.S. (as Avonex and Rebif). However, the official release clarifies that "the trial was conducted with the human serum albumin-free formulation of interferon beta-1a," and that isn't available in the U.S. So while I don't know the difference, it's not really a new drug they're using here. Nevertheless, the study's approach to treatment, and its positive results, is interesting.
198419 tn?1360242356 I am no expert, but since three of the CRAB drugs are interferon beta (either 1a or 1b), they should all have the similar benefits/risks.
198419 tn?1360242356 Morning! I'm looking for a little help researching anaphylaxis reaction with recombinant interferon beta 1a. I don't need the amount of cases in the reporting or if it has happened. I'm more-so seeking clinical/scientific case reports that discuss various testing mechanisms when hypersensitive or anaphylaxis reactions were though to be cause by the interferon.

Avatar n tn It is produced by recombinant DNA technology using genetically engineered Chinese Hamster Ovary cells into which the human interferon beta gene has been introduced. The amino acid sequence of AVONEX® is identical to that of natural human interferon beta.
198419 tn?1360242356 In another study, called TENERE, Aubagio was compared with Rebif® (interferon beta-1a, EMD Serono and Pfizer) in relapsing MS, and did not reach its primary endpoint (the main question posed by the study) -- the “risk of failure,” meaning the first occurrence of a relapse, or permanent discontinuation of the study treatment, whichever came first.
572651 tn?1530999357 The Comparison of Alemtuzumab and Rebif® Efficacy in Multiple Sclerosis (CARE-MSSM) I and II studies are designed to determine the safety and effectiveness of the investigational drug alemtuzumab as compared to the FDA-approved therapy Rebif (interferon beta-1a), in adults with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The studies will look for differences between these drugs on the progression of disability and in the number of relapses (flare-ups) and brain lesions caused by MS.

675058 tn?1226445723 Are you facing a decision about choosing a med? Of the four approved for use in MS, three are Interferons (specifically beta-1a) and one, Copaxone is not. They are all about equally effective in RRMS. Do you have concerns about being on an interferon?
Avatar f tn I was taking Avonex (another interferon beta 1a) and my MS specialist said I could quit cold turkey. My neurologist suggested waiting three months but my MS specialist said only one month was necessary. I ended up stopping my Avonex in mid-August and was lucky to get pregnant exactly one month later. I'm 10 weeks and have seen a strong heartbeat. I wish you the best and hope you have a blissful pregnancy and healthy baby!!
470613 tn?1207312671 Avonex and Rebif are Interferon-beta-1a. The difference is in their dosage, their frequency of administration and the route of administration. Avonex is 33mcg given once weekly into the muscle. It has the lowest frequency of side effects and of developing neutralizing antibodies. Rebif is 44mcg given three times a week subcutaneously. It has a higher frequency of side effects and antibodies. This is due to the dose. Betaseron is Interferon-beta-1b.
4455840 tn?1354842183 Hi Jane & LuLu. Currently on Rebif (Interferon beta 1a) with autoinjector for a year. It's a round lump one 1 side of the tummy & one small area with hardening sensation upon pressing down. It hurts on & off. Already tried massaging after the injection as advised by the nurse. Trying to analyze & wonder if the medicine had been absorbed by the body or already hardened & become the lump. Trying to ignore the lump but subconsciously, know that it's still present.
Avatar f tn I took Avonex for three years and unfortunately I was one of those that always had side effects, so I gave up. With Rebif you are taking an even higher dose of Interferon Beta 1-A than Avonex users. I have heard that Rebif users start to notice a reduction in side effects after more time on the drug. There is that chance that could happen for you. I would talk things over with your doctor.
1755625 tn?1421447637 I got mixed advice when I was taking interferon. The pharmacist and the injection nurse at the clinic I attend both told me to wear a face mask around people, because they were sure I was taking something that would lower my immune system. But when the Rebif nurse visited me at home, she explained that the type of interferon we take (interferon beta 1a or 1b) affect T cells, and don't have a seriously averse affect on our immune systems.
Avatar f tn In all of my reading of the professional medical literature I have never heard anything about Interferon-beta-1a or 1b causing a true arthritis. This makes me think that the swollen and painful fingers are due to something else and NOT MS. This raises the question of the presence of another condition like Rheumatoid Arthritis, RA, which can happen concurrently with MS in really unlucky people. Also, garden variety Osteoarthritis can occur and come on quite rapidly.
