Common Questions and Answers about Insulin glargine mechanism of action

lantus

Avatar f tn Examples are insulin zinc suspension, protamine zinc insulin, and the insulin analogues insulin glargine and insulin detemir. The latter two insulins are now the most widely used long-acting insulins. * Biphasic insulins: mixtures of short-acting and intermediate-acting insulins in different proportions, such as 30/70, 50/50. Examples are NovoMix 30, Humulin M3, Insuman comb and Humalog Mix25.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Insulin glargine is also known as Lantus. Lantus, just like all insulins, can stimulate the body into causing fat production, so it is possible to gain weight on Lantus.
Avatar n tn She ate one small piece of pizza, small piece of cake and 1/4 cup of ice cream and ran around playing hard for 5 hours. Before dinner(6:00 p.m.) 234 bg; had 7 units of novolog; at 10:00 p.m. reading was 231; we did not give insulin because we thought it might be adrenaline. At 1:00 a.m. the bg was 298; gave 2 units of novolog. At 7:00 a.m. bg was at 266.
Avatar n tn LANTUS is not intended for intravenous administration. The prolonged duration of activity of insulin glargine is dependent on injection into subcutaneous tissue. Intravenous administration of the usual subcutaneous dose could result in severe hypoglycemia." This is because the effect described below, of forming microprecipitates below the skin, cannot happen in the blood stream. All the insulin in the blood is available immediately to the body.
Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Avatar f tn The visit to the diabetologist revealed a glycemic value of 369 mg/dl (7 pm), in the afternoon. She complained of polidypsia, dry mouth, weight loss. Insulinotherapy was initiated with glargine, ten units at bedtime (glycemic value before aministration was 169) after reiceiving 6 units of aspart imediately (7 pm). Next day a fasting value of 140 mg/dl. Bedtime value (2 hours postprandial ) 269. After 10 U glargine, fasting value 120 mg/dl.
Avatar m tn The doctor thinks it is too high and gave Recombinant Insulin Glargine Injection and my mother does 15 unit injection every night. But blood sugar is still like 7.3~8.3 mmol/L before meal and 9-10 mmol/L after meal. Is this often to see among diabetes type 2 patients? Can some one give me any advice about how to improve my mother's condition? Sincerely thanks.

726890 tn?1231163286 "My GP states this is normal and will eventually pass." It appears you are experiencing well known severe sides effects of Lantus. Have you spoken with your endo about your discomfort and other options? Go here and read "before taking insulin Glargine (Lantus)" http***www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a600027.html See if this applies to you.
Avatar f tn Lantus (insulin Glargine) is a very SLOW release insulin, a so-called "24-hour" insulin. Because it does not rapidly alter glucose levels it is safe to use when driving. It isn't adviseable to increase the dose of Metformin. Other insulins have the tendency to rapidly (comparatively) alter levels of conscious and situational awareness. It is often prescribed together with Metformin and Glipozide. I would also hazard a guess that weight control is an issue.
Avatar n tn One way to find out what is causing the lows is to change the timing of your long acting insulin injection. If you are injecting NPH before bed, you can expect it to cause a low at about 3am. Try having this injection in the morning instead. If the night time lows stop, you have solved the problem. If they don't stop, it could be because of the combined effect of exercise and the dinner time short-acting shot.
Avatar f tn Montefiori Medical Center (Bronx, New York) performed an in-depth study of 240 women receiveing Lantus (insulin glargine) during pregnancy. The results were published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, April, 2009 (4) 208-10. They found the drug to be well-tolerated and advised continuing the use of Lantus during pregnancy. PubMed has no studies whatsoever that substantiate an adverse affect on pregnancy.
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar n tn Have you asked your doctors about the insulin pump. It allows you to set a basal rate of insulin using fast acting insulins (Humalog) for very specific time periods. This will allow you to adjust dosages based on your very specific needs. I have had great success using it. Prior to using the pump I also had difficult time with overnight and morning blood glucose levels. My last A1C was 5.9 it really workds!!!
Avatar m tn suggests the presence of what are called Kusmal respirations, which are a result of the body attempting to blow off carbon dioxide to return the level to normal. With people having insulin utilization problems this is often due to a low level of insulin, which forces the body to utilize an alternative mechanism to use the glucose. When you visit your physician ask to have what is called an hba1c test.
Avatar n tn There is a big difference in the action of humalog 50/50 compared to regular. You should really only change your medication with the supervision and guidance of your doctor. Please do discuss this with your doctor.
Avatar f tn can anyone explain the sentence with detailed mechanism (how hypercatabolic and insulin resistance relate to each other)??
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of CampralĀ® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar n tn YOu should also know about how much carbs you are eating in any one meal (and protein) because the correct dose of insulin also depends on how much carb you eat. For example, I need 2 units of insulin for 15 g of carbohydrate, and 1 unit of insulin for 30 g of protein. YOu may be different. But you will need to work out what is correct for you.
Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar n tn Alcohol (beer) will raise levels consistent with any grain carbs and will not lower levels significantly with minimal levels of insulin in your system. I find that on a full or empty stomach, a small shot of quick acting insulin (4-5 units) for 6 or 7 beers will be perfect. It is important to remember that you will not feel lows (I already am desensitized so I dont feel anything till low 60's) and you must check very very often.
Avatar m tn Underlying glucose intolerance may be exacerbated in hyperthyroidism because overweight individuals display higher levels of insulin resistance by homeostasis modeling assessments of insulin resistance than do thinner counterparts.[20,23] In patients with Graves disease or toxic nodules, the level of elevation of T3 correlates directly to the degree of peripheral insulin resistance by homeostasis modeling assessments of insulin resistance.
