Common Questions and Answers about Insulin glargine and cancer

lantus

Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
4812794 tn?1359497146 Richard Bernstein as it explains well how to use insulin, and also alow carb diet to help reduce how much insulin you actually need.
Avatar n tn After giving birth, the gestational diabetes took a respite for 6 months and then my sugars shot up and I lost 30 pounds hoping to avoid insulin but I ended up on insulin anyway. I kept off those 30 pounds and was at an average weight until I started Lantus and now I gained back all that weight. While doctors will tell you it's not the insulin as they don't want you to stop taking it, I do believe some insulins (like any medication) have side effects.
Avatar f tn She complained of polidypsia, dry mouth, weight loss. Insulinotherapy was initiated with glargine, ten units at bedtime (glycemic value before aministration was 169) after reiceiving 6 units of aspart imediately (7 pm). Next day a fasting value of 140 mg/dl. Bedtime value (2 hours postprandial ) 269. After 10 U glargine, fasting value 120 mg/dl. Glycemic variation are very important and depend on the thyroid status. What is your opnion?
Avatar f tn Examples are insulin zinc suspension, protamine zinc insulin, and the insulin analogues insulin glargine and insulin detemir. The latter two insulins are now the most widely used long-acting insulins. * Biphasic insulins: mixtures of short-acting and intermediate-acting insulins in different proportions, such as 30/70, 50/50. Examples are NovoMix 30, Humulin M3, Insuman comb and Humalog Mix25.
Avatar n tn I am curious as why you do not mention that Glargine(lantus) does NOT have a license for twice daily usage ,levemir has a licensce for OD and BD and has weight benefits for type 2 patients???? or are you heavily sponsored/involved with the manufactureres of glargine? I am interested.
726890 tn?1231163286 I have recently been commenced on lantus 30 units at night but have found that i am awake all night with severe chest pain and palpatations. Also I experience incredible burning when injecting myself as well as numbness around my lips, general fatigue and muscle soreness, especially in the legs. My GP states this is normal and will eventually pass. As these symptoms have been going on for nearly 3 months should I change my GP and the Endo who prescribed "the insulin from hell".
Avatar n tn Steve, here is what I know about insulins and insulin pumps. Please consult your doctor for more details: Insulins: Novolog (aspart),onset 5-10 mins, peak 1-3 hrs, duration 3-5 hrs Humalog (lispro), onset <15 mins, peak .5-1.5 hrs, duration 2-4 Regular, onset .
Avatar m tn The doctor thinks it is too high and gave Recombinant Insulin Glargine Injection and my mother does 15 unit injection every night. But blood sugar is still like 7.3~8.3 mmol/L before meal and 9-10 mmol/L after meal. Is this often to see among diabetes type 2 patients? Can some one give me any advice about how to improve my mother's condition? Sincerely thanks.
Avatar n tn Cinnabon, It's another good question that you ask. We're not physicians here, so please do run our opinions by your endo. Assuming that you're having dinner at normal dinner time (somewhere 5pm -9pm) and that you're bolusing correctly for your carbos (do you know your insulin/carbo ratios?), then my best guess is that it's the shot of N that's causing it.
Avatar f tn The only reason i changed doctors in the first place is bc he moved and closed his office. Him nor my baby doctor have said anything about me getting off the Lantus and all of a sudden it seems like a big concern to this new one. I have been eating right and taking the amount of insulin she suggested and it still won't regulate and personally i believe they go hand in hand and the reason i need both is bc they work together to bring my sugar down. Thanks for your advice.
Avatar f tn Lantus (insulin Glargine) is a very SLOW release insulin, a so-called "24-hour" insulin. Because it does not rapidly alter glucose levels it is safe to use when driving. It isn't adviseable to increase the dose of Metformin. Other insulins have the tendency to rapidly (comparatively) alter levels of conscious and situational awareness. It is often prescribed together with Metformin and Glipozide. I would also hazard a guess that weight control is an issue.
915277 tn?1252573113 Anyone out there on Lantus, and have you heard about this and will you stop using Lantus due to this news?? What bothers me about this news is that the study seems a bit shaky...but, I also feel, where there is smoke, can fire be far behind?? I, myself, am thinking of changing to Levemir, at least until the experts decide what to do. Only because, I have enough health problems, if I can save myself some anguish, I think I will...What's your take on this issue??
233382 tn?1193658141 My 17-year-old type-1 daughter is a competitive swimmer, and I know that during her swim season she has to reduce her insulin by a fair amount, and still she sometimes gets lows that can really take it out of her. She's also on the pen system, which has worked well for her. Is your son on Lantus (glargine) at night? When she switched to that, with Novolog at mealtimes, her numbers stablized and she has since then had fewer lows during workouts.
979080 tn?1323433639 It is true that cancer cells thrive on sugar-just like any other cells or bacteria they love glucose. Because cancer cells grow and multiply very fast, they need a lot of energy that is obtained from sugar. I did see information that hepatitis C virus needs iron to replicate. That is why patients with HCV should avoid iron supplements. But I don't think that sugar can boost hepatitis C virus in any way. Viruses don't need nutrition of any kind.
Avatar n tn I would check out that link to make sure there is some hard science to back it up, because cancer does like estrogen and a large load of blood glucose does cause a temporary insulin surge. I would guess unrefined sugar and most carbohydrate foods probably cause a bit less of a glucose load in the bloodstream and therefore less of an insulin surge than refined sugar products, and my guess is that there should be a lot of information out there in the diabetes literature.
Avatar m tn I have been a diabetic 40 years (Type 1), and started on Lantis about a year ago, replacing NPH for my basal insulin (I also take Humalog with a pen). I injected Lantis with a syringe, and as I never had a problem with NPH when it sometimes entered a vessel, I did not draw back before injecting. The result, when I hit a vessel in my leg, was a drop in blood suger from 180 to 30 in 1/2 hour!
Avatar m tn I had a diabetic cat for years. Controlling the diet and making sure the eat right after giving insulin, and mine took human insulin, was of utmost importance. I am wondering if he doesn't also have a urinary tract infection going on at the same time causing the mishaps and urinating all over the place. I had several vets that wanted to put my cat Koa down immediately because of the diabetes, and many would not even give me the time of day without a $2000.00 deposit.
Avatar m tn Although insulin levels were never extraordinarily high, the increase between the 2nd and 3rd hours seems to be abnormal and indicative of delayed insulin response, a pattern associated with insulin resistance. Several years ago I had elevated cortisol throughout the day. Last year, is was below range for most of the day. It seems to have flip flopped, while DHEA has stayed consistently borderline high (but still in range) and testosterone is elevated.
Avatar n tn My 16 year old son has had high hbA1c (14 in Nov., 11 in Feb.), and high blood pressure. He is not overweight (105 lbs). He has 1 or 2 high blood sugar readings a month. Nothing over 300. His Dr. is having a difficult time with this. She keeps sending him for blood tests, and has not been able to tell me what might be going on. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn that must be a huge relief, i know its rough about the insulin, but not having cancer is the best news , i do really wish you well, god bless.
Avatar n tn I have type 2 diabetes, and take metformin, gabapentin, and simvastatin How often should i be testing my blood glucose? This discussion is related to upper leg pain and lower back pain.
