Avatar m tn older insulin Humalin-N has an onset of 15 - 30 minutes compared to the modern insulins such as Aspart (novorapid for me) and Humalog, which have an onset of about 10 - 15 minutes. Moderate acting insulins are the ones we use for basal (background) insulin. Examples are Humalin-R (older insulin), levemir, lantus etc. Then we have the action profile: whether there is a peak or not. The older insulins, particularly humalin-R do not have a flat action profile.

So your blood sugar rises because of the immediate release into your system of the carbs in the ice cream, flooding your bloodstream with carbs, and the insulin takes a bit to get working.

"Less common or rare Depression of the skin at place of injection; thickening of the skin at place of injection; ..." This doesn't mention cellulite directly, but it sounds similar. The site also has a clear caution to discuss these or any other changes with your doc.

Avatar n tn 5 hours so at two hours would probably drop a little more. From the ADA website Humalog onset less than 15 minutes, peak .5 to 1.5 hours duration 2-4 hours and maximum duration 4-6 hours. And then throw the fat content of the food in the mix which slows digestion and we almost have to be a rocket scientist. Also from the www.diabetes.org website: "Hypoglycemia unawareness tends to happen to people who have had diabetes for many years.

Avatar f tn Examples are insulin zinc suspension, protamine zinc insulin, and the insulin analogues insulin glargine and insulin detemir. The latter two insulins are now the most widely used long-acting insulins. * Biphasic insulins: mixtures of short-acting and intermediate-acting insulins in different proportions, such as 30/70, 50/50. Examples are NovoMix 30, Humulin M3, Insuman comb and Humalog Mix25.
Avatar f tn Insulinotherapy was initiated with glargine, ten units at bedtime (glycemic value before aministration was 169) after reiceiving 6 units of aspart imediately (7 pm). Next day a fasting value of 140 mg/dl. Bedtime value (2 hours postprandial ) 269. After 10 U glargine, fasting value 120 mg/dl. Glycemic variation are very important and depend on the thyroid status. Avatar f tn I have been diabetic fro 12 years but found out his information about insulins. You need to know the onset and peak times. The article i read is Levemir onset is 3-4 hour after initial injection and then peaks at 6-8 hours after injection. I do not see a 24 hours effect when taking Levemir.
Avatar f tn Or is there any other medicine which can be taken to maintain a normal blood sugar level...Right now, I am taking Novomix 30 (biphasic insulin aspart) and Volibo 0.2 (twice in a day-breakfast and Dinner time)...
Avatar n tn I, like you, have noticed a definite peak between 4-5 hours after taking the Lantus, so taking it in the morning makes this peak mean that i require less morning quick-acting insulin to cover my breakfast. Like you, also, I noticed elevated morning sugars, and I have fixed this problem by doing the spilt dose. so some insulin is working well through the night. In my case, I take my larger dose (2/3 of my total) in the morning, and I take 1/3 of my total daily dose at bedtime.
Avatar n tn LANTUS is not intended for intravenous administration. The prolonged duration of activity of insulin glargine is dependent on injection into subcutaneous tissue. Intravenous administration of the usual subcutaneous dose could result in severe hypoglycemia." This is because the effect described below, of forming microprecipitates below the skin, cannot happen in the blood stream. All the insulin in the blood is available immediately to the body.

Avatar n tn I had to go on county insurance because I lost my job, and they wont cover Humalog or Novolog. The only fast acting insulin they cover is Novolin R. The problem is that I am on an insulin pump. I know this stuff is different than what I was taking (Humalog, or the equivelent Novolog), but I don't know what it is going to do to me. My doctor isn't knowledgable and I'm stuck with her. I can't go anywhere else.
Avatar n tn I dont know whether to inject, i know her sugars will rise without insulin, but dont know how much to inject either (she has a morning and evening 10/90 mix).Should i give her a small amount of fast acting insulin when she eats or gets higher blood sugar, and then normal this evening?
Avatar n tn ” This means that enzymes that replenish muscle carbs are at their highest levels. Plus, insulin, which rebuilds protein stores, is at peak levels. So eating a carb-and-protein mix (peanut butter sandwich, yogurt with fruit, bagel with cream cheese, or a handful of nuts) at this point will maintain muscle, replenish glycogen stores and reduce the amount of fat your body stores. Even a sport drink or a piece fruit are a good idea if you don’t have something more complex available.
Avatar f tn Good for you! Your symptoms should peak (be a the worst) and then each day after start getting better. It's amazing how something that makes you feel good can eventually turn on you physically and mentally. Learning to live each day without the pills is the hardest part, even if you don't want them. It's become such a part of us and our routines. Keep yourself busy and force yourself to do things and the time will pass more quickly.
Avatar n tn Also understand what your insulin duration setting is. Insulin duration is the time that insulin is effective in your body. Normal duration for fast acting insulins is 4 hours, after that the effectiveness is almost nothing. If you have it set to longer than that, it's possible that your pump thinks you have more insulin on board than you really do, so it doesn't dose you enough. Then if your correction factors are wrong, you get dosed the wrong amounts of insulin, and you go low.
