Novolog insulin peak

Common Questions and Answers about Novolog insulin peak

novolog

Avatar n tn t afford the novolog so while have to buy regular insulin to replace the rapid acting insulin. My doseage of novolog is 4 units before meals so is that how much regular insulin I should take?
Avatar n tn I agree with you that slow digestion would probably cause a low at first, followed by high sugars hours later. I have noticed that if I eat a meal that is heavy in fats (fats slow digestion time of the carbs in a meal), such as french fries (NO, I do NOT make a habit of eating stuff like this!), I have to wait until about a half hour AFTER I eat to take my Novalog so the insulin doesn't peak before the carbs digest.
Avatar n tn I had to go on county insurance because I lost my job, and they wont cover Humalog or Novolog. The only fast acting insulin they cover is Novolin R. The problem is that I am on an insulin pump. I know this stuff is different than what I was taking (Humalog, or the equivelent Novolog), but I don't know what it is going to do to me. My doctor isn't knowledgable and I'm stuck with her. I can't go anywhere else.
Avatar n tn Most diabetics in America who take injections rather than using a pump use Lantus once or twice a day and a quick-acting insulin like Novolog before meals. We do not normally take NPH with the Lantus, for they do similar things. Once the Lantus dose is right, NPH becomes unnecessary. I would suggest that you discuss this with her endo.
Avatar n tn MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED LANTUS INSULIN TO REPLACE THE HUMULIN L INSULIN THAT I HAD TAKEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I TAKE THE LANTUS INSULIN PRESCRIBED DOSAGE(S) THAT APPROXIMATELY 15-30 MINUTES LATER I START TO SWEAT PROFUSELY. IS THIS A NORMAL REACTION TO THE LANTUS INSULIN? I VOICED MY CONCERNS TO MY DOCTOR AND HE HAD NO COMMENT. I AM ALSO TAKING SEVERAL DOSES OF HUMULIN R AND HAVE GAINED WEIGHT SINCE I STARTED TAKING THE LANTUS. PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU.
Avatar n tn Lantus, Humalog, and Novolog ALL require prescrptions because 1) they have not been out on the market as long as the conventional porcine/bovine insulins (Humulin N, R, L, 50/50, 70/30, etc), 2) The onset of actions for Humalog, Novolog, and Lantus are quite fast (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes), and although these insulins generally do NOT cause hypoglycemia episodes (low blood sugar), if patients do not know how to use them properly, they can lapse into a hypoglycemia episode and this can
Avatar n tn My father was recently discharged from a nursing home and he takes 2 different kinds of insulin. Novolog 70/30 and Novolog Aspart (Sliding Scale). I've heard about sliding scale before but when i brought it up to his pharmacist she did not know much about it (got me concerned). I found this one sliding scale online, listings of how much units to give depending on what his blood sugar level is.
Avatar n tn I am having issues with the Novolog pen too...the disc in the pen that acts as a lever pushing insulin out slips. I have had this in more than four pens now. Sometimes, the pen does not dispense at all, seems to function fine till I have to flush out 6-10 units of insulin at a time to make it work again. I have had severe highs with this - when I thought I injected myself with insulin and the pen did not function like it should.
Avatar m tn Normally your care provider would have provided you with instructions. Didn't instructional paperwork accompany the pen? Contact your care provider for the proper amount [units] designated for you. Then Google search "how to use novolog flex pen" [w/o the " " [quotes]], scroll down and click the link to [PDF] NovoLog Flex Pen. You'll need a .pdf reader to read it. If you don't have one, go to Adobe and download and install the free pdf file reader.
Avatar m tn Sorry this is such a late response, but no, Humilin R (regular insulin) is not a substitue for Novolog, which is a fast acting insulin. However, her insulin supply is still good for up to 30 days after taking it out of refrigeration. Hope she made it there OK and you had a nice visit.
Avatar m tn I am a type one and have been on novalog for 5 years. For the last 6 months sometime my novolog works and sometimes it don't. For example tonight four hours after meal I was at 280 so I tryed to correct with 5 units of novolog. Normally this should have brought my numbers down but, tonight and here laity 3 hours later i was still at 259...It's like i never tryed to correct.
Avatar n tn For the past year, I have been taking Novolog Insulin in combination with Lantus. I have noticed the beginning stages of cellulite around the areas where I give the Novolog injection. I am a 27 year old, juvenile onset diabetic. I am thin for my height and have never had a problem with cellulite until the change in medication. Can this be linked to either of the new insulins that I am taking?
Avatar n tn I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat?
Avatar n tn 12. He goes to school all day, and sometimes gets hungry and I am wondering if it is necessary always for him to take insuling even for snacks? Any ideas/input would be appreciated.
704262 tn?1247674638 I take Novolog and Lantus insulin in the pen forms. I just started taking them like this about 6 weeks ago. I really like them!!! I take the Novolog 5 units in the morning and 5 units in the evenings, with meals. I also use a sliding scale with it. The Lantus I take just before bedtime. Right now, I'm at 25 units, from 45 units 3 weeks ago!!! I've found that when I take both just before bed, my morning fasting blood sugars are really low...like below 80.
Avatar f tn I have been using Novolog insulin for a month now and will run out before I can get my next supply. I do have some Humulin R on hand. Can I substitute that for 2 days?
Avatar n tn Are you sure they told you your child has to eat 30-45 grams of food or did they tell you your child had to have so many units of insulin per 30-45 grams of food? My son has to have 1 unit of insulin (novolog) per every 45 grams of carbs he eats. IF he does not eat the full 45 grams he does not need the unit. I usually wait until after he eats before giving him insulin because toddlers are so finicky they may not eat all of what you have measured out. HE is also on a slinding scale.
Avatar f tn Ask your dr to prescribe you the new insulin Tresiba. This is an ultralong acting insulin and seems to help many people with avoiding high morning sugars. 5. Take your breakfast soon after you wake up (you will need to dose Novolog to provide both a correction and to cover the food). it will be best if your breakfast is very low carb ie. eggs or meat and some veges, to avoid further increasing blood sugars too much.
Avatar n tn It sounds like you need a specialist that can help you with both carb counting and your insulin intake. Any changes in your insulin intake can take time to adjust. The fact that you are testing so much shows that you are trying to take care of your diabetes. Have you talked to your doctor about the highs and lows? Has your doctor talked to you about going to the pump? There are so many varibles that come into play here. I would suggest speaking to your doctor.
Avatar f tn Hello, I was wondering if anyone might know if there is any illness that can cause a rapid drop in blood sugars. I have gone from 20 units of novolog before meals to 6 units of novolog before meals in 3 weeks. What can cause this? Still eating same as always. Thank you for your time!!
Avatar n tn I am wondering if anyone else has to change sites so often, and whether it could be the insulin (humalog)? We love the flexibility and precision of the pump, but this has been difficult.
1367276 tn?1278801812 I was just started on insulin 3 days ago. The doctor had me take 5 units of novolog 3 times a day with 1 unit for every 50 points above 150, and then I take 15 units of Lantus at bedtime. For the past 3 days I have been checking my levels 6 to 7 times a day and they have been between 167 and 297 and I can't seem to get them below. What can I do without taking more insulin?
Avatar n tn Sliding scale is quite an old approach to dosing insulin. Another approach is to dose insulin based on the amount of carbs, protein, and fat in any single meal. This gives a much more accurate dosing (and control of blood sugars) than sliding scale. Your requirements are individual - please talk to your doctor as well.
12861759 tn?1432917955 I am currently using Lantus and Novolog. Drs. advice is to start with 40 units of Lantus and up it 2 units every third day until I get a fasting BG of less then 130. Is it more important to get to my Lantus goal on a consistant basis before I try to adjust my Novolog?
Avatar n tn I use a short-acting insulin, Novolog, and a 24-period insulin, Lantis. I give Novolog with each meal, and Lantus when I go to bed. I am having troubles with my sugars in the morning. I wake up at 7am, and eat breakfast. I give my shot immediately after eating breakfast, around 7:20. I test my sugar before I eat breakfast and it is normally good. Then at 8am, I head to school. When I arrive at school around 9am, I test my sugar, which is usually pretty high (200-300).
Avatar n tn Has anyone out there gotten any skin reactions with using the Minimed pump or Novolog insulin? My wife has started getting awful welts on her stomach and even her leg and we were wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The welt is terrible swelling at the injection site and I've done some research and it looks like the Novolog is the problem, but it could also be the pump. Anyone else had this happen? Thanks.
Avatar f tn This has never happened to me, sorry I cant relate. you could try actrapid instead of novolog. Its old school but it might be worth trying a different short acting insulin. It drives me mad when DR's don't listen or hear you out and just assume things. If your feeling like crap only when you use novolog, its obviously whats causing the problem.
