Sorry this is such a late response, but no, Humilin R (regular insulin) is not a substitue for Novolog, which is a fast acting insulin. However, her insulin supply is still good for up to 30 days after taking it out of refrigeration. Hope she made it there OK and you had a nice visit.

I am a type one and have been on novalog for 5 years. For the last 6 months sometime my novolog works and sometimes it don't. For example tonight four hours after meal I was at 280 so I tryed to correct with 5 units of novolog. Normally this should have brought my numbers down but, tonight and here laity 3 hours later i was still at 259...It's like i never tryed to correct.

I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. If things have been up and down and the BG readings have fluctuated greatly (as you say) for the past 5 years, I am surprised his Doc has not made any significant changes to his insulin schedule and / or type of insulin. I was just started on insulin 3 days ago. The doctor had me take 5 units of novolog 3 times a day with 1 unit for every 50 points above 150, and then I take 15 units of Lantus at bedtime. Sliding scale is quite an old approach to dosing insulin. Another approach is to dose insulin based on the amount of carbs, protein, and fat in any single meal. This gives a much more accurate dosing (and control of blood sugars) than sliding scale. Your requirements are individual - please talk to your doctor as well.

I am currently using Lantus and Novolog. Drs. advice is to start with 40 units of Lantus and up it 2 units every third day until I get a fasting BG of less then 130. Is it more important to get to my Lantus goal on a consistant basis before I try to adjust my Novolog?
