Is novolog regular insulin

Common Questions and Answers about Is novolog regular insulin

novolog

Avatar n tn My doseage of novolog is 4 units before meals so is that how much regular insulin I should take?
Avatar m tn Sorry this is such a late response, but no, Humilin R (regular insulin) is not a substitue for Novolog, which is a fast acting insulin. However, her insulin supply is still good for up to 30 days after taking it out of refrigeration. Hope she made it there OK and you had a nice visit.
Avatar n tn I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat?
Avatar n tn My pharmacist is telling me that most diabetics use Humalog (and Novolog use is rare). Has anyone else had problems or switched from Novolog to Humalog? Are there Novolog users out there? Thanks....
Avatar n tn I had to go on county insurance because I lost my job, and they wont cover Humalog or Novolog. The only fast acting insulin they cover is Novolin R. The problem is that I am on an insulin pump. I know this stuff is different than what I was taking (Humalog, or the equivelent Novolog), but I don't know what it is going to do to me. My doctor isn't knowledgable and I'm stuck with her. I can't go anywhere else.
Avatar n tn Novolog and Humalog are what we call *designer insulins* - not quite the same as Regular Insulin, but derived from it. Which is obvious since they act within 15 minutes or less. The main difference I've found between the two is in the preservative used .... some people have an allergic reaction to to the Humalog preservative and Novolog works better (and vice versa).
Avatar n tn "So I was wondering if that sliding scale is a standard one for all patients or different for each patient." It is best to consult with your father's doctor to identify the exact amount he/she recommends. A sliding scale can be used on most patients when only using ONE insulin type, not two as in your father's case. The 30 in Novolog 70/30 is short/fast acting [70 intermediate/all day] and Novolog Aspart is entirely short/fast acting. Too much can induce hypoglycemia.
Avatar m tn One thing to make sure of is that your insulin is not more than a month old. The effectiveness of insulin can go down after a month. We've run across that a few times. Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes your body will adapt to insulins/regimine. My husband has changed his insulin dosages several times over the 24 yrs of being diabetic. He also switched from short acting to 1 long acting shot. His body is reacting better to this than it was to the Novolin. Good luck.
Avatar n tn For the past year, I have been taking Novolog Insulin in combination with Lantus. I have noticed the beginning stages of cellulite around the areas where I give the Novolog injection. I am a 27 year old, juvenile onset diabetic. I am thin for my height and have never had a problem with cellulite until the change in medication. Can this be linked to either of the new insulins that I am taking?
Avatar n tn Cristophe, It sounds like skipping meals is working for you. And, as long as your blood sugars remain within the target range, thats great. But the insulin you are using was not really designed to be used that way. Mixtard is pre-mixed insulin containing 30% rapid-acting and 70% NPH insulin. It's maximum action is at 2-8 hours after injection. And meals should be timed to coincide with this.
Avatar n tn If your total daily dose of insulin were 30, then 1500 divided by 30 = 50, meaning that 1 unit of Regular insulin would drop your blood glucose approximately 50 mg/dl. If you use Humalog (and likely the same would apply for Novolog): If your total daily dose of insulin were 30, then 1800 divided by 30 = 60, meaning that 1 unit of Humalog or Novolog would drop your blood glucose approximately 60 mg/dl.
Avatar n tn 12. He goes to school all day, and sometimes gets hungry and I am wondering if it is necessary always for him to take insuling even for snacks? Any ideas/input would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn I asked about a 30 day supply of Novolog and it is $299.00 which is impossible for me to get since I am on a strict budget due to not working anymore.
704262 tn?1247674638 I take Novolog and Lantus insulin in the pen forms. I just started taking them like this about 6 weeks ago. I really like them!!! I take the Novolog 5 units in the morning and 5 units in the evenings, with meals. I also use a sliding scale with it. The Lantus I take just before bedtime. Right now, I'm at 25 units, from 45 units 3 weeks ago!!! I've found that when I take both just before bed, my morning fasting blood sugars are really low...like below 80.
Avatar f tn Ask your dr to prescribe you the new insulin Tresiba. This is an ultralong acting insulin and seems to help many people with avoiding high morning sugars. 5. Take your breakfast soon after you wake up (you will need to dose Novolog to provide both a correction and to cover the food). it will be best if your breakfast is very low carb ie. eggs or meat and some veges, to avoid further increasing blood sugars too much.
Avatar f tn Is there any possibility you could be pregnant? It is quite unusual to have insulin requirements change so quickly. Though a drop in insulin requirement can happen in early pregnancy. Another thought is that if your thyroid function is fluctuating (for the better), there could also be corresponding fluctuations in your blood sugar control, with less insulin requirement as a result?
Avatar n tn Sliding scale is quite an old approach to dosing insulin. Another approach is to dose insulin based on the amount of carbs, protein, and fat in any single meal. This gives a much more accurate dosing (and control of blood sugars) than sliding scale. Your requirements are individual - please talk to your doctor as well.
12861759 tn?1432917955 when your 4 hour PP BG is the same as your pre-meal BG then you took the correct amount of novolog for the carbs you eat. WHen your Pre-meal is under 130 and your fasting is under 130 your Lantus is correct.
Avatar n tn The only thing I can think of that can cause this low sugar at 1pm is the absorbtion rate of my Novolog from breakfast. This would cause the insulin to start working after the sugar has been absorbed, and a low around lunch. Does this sound feasable? I would appreciate any help, Thanks.
Avatar n tn ve done some research and it looks like the Novolog is the problem, but it could also be the pump. Anyone else had this happen? Thanks.
1273125 tn?1365077526 If it is too much insulin then a side effect of too much insulin can cause hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is not deadly... UNLESS it is severe.
Avatar f tn This has never happened to me, sorry I cant relate. you could try actrapid instead of novolog. Its old school but it might be worth trying a different short acting insulin. It drives me mad when DR's don't listen or hear you out and just assume things. If your feeling like crap only when you use novolog, its obviously whats causing the problem.
Avatar n tn My doctor told me that as long as I take insulin I will gain weight. However the question is; Is it the Lantus or the Novolog. When my glucose levels were out of control and I went in to see the doctor on a Tuesday, by the Friday, I had gained 15 pounds and steadily gaining. I am at the point now where I am trying to cut 95% of the carbs out of my diet and increase my physical activity so that I can reduce the need for Novolog, loose weight and eventually loose my need for Lantus as well.
Avatar n tn I am a type 1 diabetic and I have been using Novolog for the past three years. For the first year I was using it by shots, but the last two years I have been using it in an insulin pump. In the last three to four months I have developed intense itching at the infusion site when I change it. For about 36 hours it itches so much I have scratched it to bleeding. In the last few weeks it has begun itching almost as soon as I put in a new canula.
Avatar n tn Especially children get diagnosed with this type of diabetes. Sometimes young adults also face this problem. Here, the main solution is insulin injection and a proper diet which can bring the level of blood sugar back to normal again.
Avatar n tn I am sorry to sound ignorant, but, although I have heard of 70/30, I am unfamiliar with how it works. I am guessing that 70/30 insulin is in lieu of NPH, but the question is...does he need regular to cover food or does he only get the regular insulin at night as you mentioned? What does his Endocrinologist say? The only thing that comes to mind for me is that he has done a lot of growing from 14 -19 yrs. of age, going through puberty, etc.
