There are different HIV antibody tests. One test is the ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). If the ELISA test is positive, a second test called a Western blot is done to confirm the result. The Western blot takes longer to perform and is more expensive than the ELISA test, but it is more precise.
Correction: I found out (on the next few pages of the report) that I also have been tested for the following:
HSV 1Glycoprotein G Ab, Ig (ELISA) = Negative (0.31)
HSV 2 Glycoprotein G Ab, Ig (ELISA) = Negative (0.09)
Based from the thread here and judging on the unreliability of the combined tests, it looks like I don't have HSV 1 or HSV2. But why did my GP told me that I have a herpes?

A recent medical article stated that the Insti Rapid HIV test can detect the virus nearly 9 days earlier than the Western Blot laboratory test. Furthermore, the test performed rather well against other laboratory based HIV tests. This is due largely to Insti's ability to detect HIV gp41 antibodies, which are produced during early infection. With that said, how accurate is an Insti rapid test at 6.5 weeks after unprotected vaginal sex with a female of unknown status?

It says that you should do another test inmidiatly, so go to the closest testing place, and get another rapid test so you can have a better idea, DO NOT HAVE A Western Blot, unless you have a positive elisa or rapid test, and inconclusive or indeterminate is not a positive, if you continue having indeterminate results on rapid test, get an Elisa and if the Elisa is also indeterminate, seek for and Hiv expert near you to help you on wich test is better for this case, rapid and elisa tes
i have no symptoms untill now, i did Elisa test 52 days after 1st time and 20 days after last time and today it´s been 2 months since 1st time (the day i saw the blood) and 1 month after our last time. i live in africa, the doctor said that the elisa test i did is excellant and it could detect antibodies even 1 week after last time.
Being that the rapid test was taken closer to the 3 month mark, and was negative, why were four tests by the state lab (taken much earlier) indeterminate? Is the rapid test that much different from the EIA/ELISA test? Also, based on my limited research over the past month, I've never come across anything that would indicate that the EIA/ELISA test could be indeterminate. It is usually positive or negative. I also find it strange that the state lab has involved the CDC.
Here is my story 6 months back(in sep 2010) i had sex with a prostitute but unfortunately my condom got ruptured and i got tested 3 months post exposure and now 6 months post exposure and test results are negative(test was performed using 3rd generation elisa kit) and all my symptoms are muscle pains.still i feel these muscle pains especially at the lowe part of my body (both thighs and calf's).

Because of this a second type of HIV test, the Western Blot, is performed on all samples that test positive for HIV antibodies using the ELISA test. The Western Blot test confirms if a sample is positive or negative. Very rarely, a result comes back ‘indeterminate’, meaning a person has just started to develop antibodies to HIV because it is so close to the time when they were infected.
My question is was an ELISA test done and then it was confirmed with a Western Blot test - or was the only test performed the Westerm Blot since this is the only test that showed up on my lab results.
From what I have read, a Western Blot test will not be performed unless there is a positive ELISA test. This has me concerned as Western Blot is the only test on the report. However it did come back negative.
My other question is about Oral HPV.
m not sure the generation of my elisa test. I ask lab and they said me that the test they performed to me it was 3rd generation but i don't trust a lot them , the reason is that i live in Venezuela and i don't belive that for a lab of resources not very high they could have this expensive technology ( 3rd generation test) . In the case the test was practiced to me wasn't 3rd generation but 2nd generation the probably of 95 % still remain? thanks .

Hi. How accurate is the rapid HIV test that uses oral fluid? This is the test I had done and now I am really scared cause I've read that its accuracy is not nearly that of the standard ELISA.
Also- when you get the oral test done, you are supposed to swab once around the upper gums and then once around the lower gums. The nurse who performed my test also swabbed on my cheeks a lot- would this mess up the results?
