How do anti anxiety drugs work

Common Questions and Answers about How do anti anxiety drugs work

Avatar n tn Is there any medical reason for routinely denying patients anti-anxiety drugs prior to stereotactic core needle biopsy? I thought it was somewhat barbaric to go through the experience with the kind of terror it seems to cause EVERYONE who's ever had it. My radiologist simply didn't "entertain" the idea of tranquilizers, yet I'm reading about other patients who benefitted from them. Are the doctors truly so unaware of the extraordinary level of stress for their patients?
Avatar n tn In the case of anxiety/panic/phobic neuroses or another comparable anxiety-related disorder, do the benefits outweigh the risks? No, as there simply are no benefits. The atypicals are not indicated for the treatment of anxiety states for a good reason...they are not effective. So, why prescribe them? They are "non-habit forming", unlike the Benzodiazepines. That's actually not true (any psychoactive compund will induce some degree of dependence).
1243543 tn?1269127622 Meds like Xanax and Klonopin are highly addictive. I am very anti anxiety medication because i believe to completely rid this condition you must do so without medication. These medications only mask the symptoms of anxiety, when you take the meds away the anxiety returns. There is nothing wrong with taking them, if you use them the way that you are supposed to, just be prepared to take them for the rest of your life.
Avatar m tn I think I could do it without anything if I had to. I would rather have the shorter acting Xanax. How much Xanax do I need for this. I have the.25 pills. And I have 5 mg valium pills. I know you can't say for sure because different people mite need different amounts, but just what ever you think about this. I don't plan on telling the dentist that I took xanax instead of valium. The dental work itself is not the reason I mite need something.
Avatar n tn My doctor prescribed 20 mg of Paroxetine for anti anxiety, which is generic for Apotex I think. I took my first pill last night and had sweats all night and a severe stomach ache. Anybody taking anything that works and doesn't cause these sx. I'm in my 29th week of treatment, geno type 1.
Avatar m tn Hi,i am just wondering,i do know that medications do sometimes work for some sufferes, but from so many point of views, the medical doctors that i have visited so far, they refused to prescribe xanax, benzo and other anti anxiety medications, because they believed medications do nothing on anxiety, they told me that anxiety should not be label as an DISORDER because its not an illness, thats they recommended CBT to overcame Panic disorder etc.
Avatar m tn That's why they do the trials. However, the drugs generally outperform placebo by enough of a percentage to get approval, and placebo effects generally wear off while drugs keep working. Some people also get worse side effects from placebo than from the real drug, just showing how complex the human brain is. Opiates would be a bad choice for depression, as they cause depression in many people because they're a downer drug. Benzos can do the same thing if you take them too often.
Avatar n tn Initially this will be uncomfortable but with time the acupressure will do wonders. Use an analgesic cream or spray. Anti-inflammatory drugs help. A good physiotherapist can teach you some exercises which will help you a lot. A MRI of the cervical spine may be required. Please consult a neurologist. The treatment is to remove the compression.
Avatar f tn I'm sure it won't totally cure me, it certainly won't solve all of the problems I have, but i'm just wondering what anti depressants can do for me, should I not get my hopes up to high, or will they probably have a significant positive affect on how I feel about everything.
Avatar f tn How long have you been on it
Avatar f tn Pretty much how well drugs work. But that shouldn't be taken as the same as saying it doesn't work, it's saying the particular therapist or drug you're using might not work but another therapist or another drug might. There are a lot of drugs out there, and a lot of different types of therapy, and a lot of different therapists. If you find the right one, you only need that one to work, even if in general the type of treatment doesn't work very well.
Avatar n tn If your symptoms have improved then it would suggest that it is anxiety as anti dreppresants to not suppress an actual physical problem within your body.
Avatar m tn I've also been a guinea pig to anti-anxiety/antidepressants on two separate occasions, and neither experience was one I would repeat or ever suggest to someone else. The side effects are not worth it. All you have to do is a little research on the medication you are considering, and you will see thousands of people upset and frustrated with the crap that comes along with it.
Avatar m tn Hey there! I'm not entirely sure how one gets addicted to bath salts, but I DO understand the rest of it! And you can totally do this! You definitely have to get some kind of aftercare and support or you will go through this over and over until you do! (that would be my story!!!!!) We can help support you here too!
Avatar m tn anxiety is ruining my life i cant work or do anything socially anymore and its putting real strain on my relationship with my girlfriend because when i met her i was going through a good spell. I have a constant tight chest, i get heat palpitatioins and all the other usuall symptoms but im worried that there is something the doctors are not seeing.
3867523 tn?1348953285 The Wellbutrin worked marvelously for me and I never got depressed or irritable once during treatment. I am not saying it is the drug for you, just telling you how it worked for me. ADs work differently on different people so it is best to get examined by a psychiatrist and then decide together which drug to take. I am copying and pasting an article from Mayo Clinic about the symptoms of Depression.
Avatar f tn It is an additive in many medicines so people may not be aware how much they are taking. Most people do not have advance fibrosis or cirrhosis therefore you can take which ever you choose just like anyone else. If you have cirrhosis, that is a different matter. Cirrhotics should only take Tylenol and sometimes in reduced doses (<2000 mg) depending on the extent of cirrhosis. Patients with cirrhosis people should avoid using all NSAIDs.
Avatar n tn There are other anti-anxiety drugs that have no sedative side effects. These include the SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors such as Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil), 5-HT1A agonists (buspirone), and TCA's (tricyclic antidepressants) which all affect the concentration of serotonin at certain receptors in the brain. One in particular is Manerix (moclobemide).
717440 tn?1292747342 ) I've never known myself to have anxiety, but then I realized that I don't really know what anxiety is. Can anyone explain it to me? How does anxiety make you feel? All I know is that I stay up much later than before, with my mind going a million kilometers an hour with all the wrong things going on in my life. I've decided to try going to bed tonight with my headphones on so I can think of other things instead. Hopefully it helps.
203342 tn?1328740807 I think doctors are just too quick to hand out the drugs as a pat answer for everything. I don't want to take drugs. I don't like drugs. I barely ever take Tylenol. If anyone has suggestions on better coping techniques or natural alternatives and remedies, I am interested in that. I did have a doctor try to teach me to deep breathe, which I tried and it was ok but I have a hard time letting go, I guess. I guess I need to work on that. Any other suggestions?
Avatar f tn I know you said you were against medication, but I actually was an introvert myself in junior high until I started taking anti drepressents and anti anxiety medication, and it is like it opened up new doors for me, literally and figuartively speaking. It allowed me to cope with things and be the person I am really supposed to be. Good luck.
Avatar n tn How do you really avoid stress its everywhere. Is it normal to use antidepressants and anti anxiety drugs when you have v-tach?
Avatar f tn My doctor gave me an RX for Welbutrin, but he's an internist, and I don't think he knows much about anxiety disorders, and I keep reading that WB doesn't really work for anxiety. For some weird reason, even with all my anxiety and panic, I love public speaking! Can't drive on the freeway, but can talk for an hour in front of 400 people--this disease is just strange and disconcerting.
Avatar f tn Yea i get the same knds of symptoms, sudden depression, anxiety, like the world is just out to get me, like i could be in a crowded room and still be all alone, its the drugs, the meds. they do that to you when you r coming off of them. they r called uppers, they supress the hormones that make you upset, so when u come off of it, or even if your still on it, its like sudden depression, sudden worry. Your dizziness mite be from low blood sugar. eat things with some sugar in it to fix that.
Avatar n tn Learn about the anxiety. How it works and what it is. Anxiety is one of those Bast**d afflictions that feeds on itself and our only hope , with the exception of the medication , is to see it for what it is and dismiss it. My anxiety ,when I started treatment , sky rocketed within the first three weeks and all of the education and medications I have been taking for it didn't seem to have any effect on it at all.
358304 tn?1409713092 Just so he can show me theres nothing wrong. I guess my question is... do you think my anxiety can be triggered by this fear of something in my neck? I researched neck pain and night sweats... and of course all you get is the worst stuff to come up... I found stuff on Lymphoma... and I thought I had cancer. The Dr. took my blood a couple months ago too and said my blood work was GREAT. My white blood cells were awesome etc. And he said If I had lymphoma...
Avatar n tn Alcohol as well as any drugs can significantly effect mental status. Until you have you anxiety under control the best thing to do would be to lay off the booze as much as possible. Don't forget alcohol is a depressant. It makes you feel like **** the next day and continues to effect you until it's toxins have completely left the body. good luck!
