It varies from person to person. Common medications for neuropathy include Gabapentin(as others mentioned--but know that the correct dose for you may be quite different than for someone else), Elavil(Amitryptiline) and Lyrica. There are others also used but these are the most common currently.

Traumatic neuropathy may be managed by systemic administration of gabapentin and/or amitriptyline with titrating dosage.nutritional supplement with Vitamin B1,B6, B12, folic acid and omega 3 fatty acid is helpful for nerve healing. Seeing a neurologist who is experienced in managing traumatic neuropathy is advised.
I have post herpatic neuropathy. I have taken Tegretol and Gabapentin with good effect, however after a few months I developed terrible migranes. I've also tried Lyrica and Lamotragine with the same side effect. My neurologist has prescribed Topamax with these medications but it doesn't help the headaches. Normally I suffer from the very occasional headache and am a very healthy person. Triptans to do not relieve the migrane caused from the gapapentin.
12 and have chronic neuropathy in the right side of my entire body. I was put on Gabapentin by my doctor and was taking the Maximum a person can take in a day which is 3600mg a day now the doctor has backed off the Gabapentin to 900mg + added 450mg of Lyrica so far I don't feel a improvement, the Gabapentin was controlling the Nerve pain with hydrocodone 5-325 tab morning and noon but so far I haven't found any cure to just be normal again.
I was taking Gabapentin 300 mg for extreme nerve pain in my foot, it worked like magic for approx. 3 months then stopped being effective. Any Thoughts - Reasons?
This Lyrica and Elavil is prescribed or peripheral neuropathy bet the side effect makes me confused. Dr. said I could take the Elavil during the day for pain but can't work, drive or concentrate. Anyone know of another antidepressant that helps with the nerve pain that won't cause the side effects that can be taken during the day?
TSH is normal, doctor now told me that to stop all vitamin supplements and only take gabapentin 300 mg three tablets a day for 30 days. but I read this are just anticonvulsants for pain. I am still suffering from the peripheral neuropathy.
I tested all the tests but still there is no clue what exactly happened. earier doctor told me that it wil be irritable bowel syndrome. pls help me out otherwiise I will sucide.
I am not a happy camper using gabapentin, whose risks, in my opinion, outweigh benefits.
In the event of neuropathy one should also consider a mild B-6 supplement.
Keeping your numbers in the target range is important for controlling diabetic neuropathy. Gabapentin is a choice and there are others. Anti seizure drugs have been show to be effective such as Lyrica. But also, antidepressants have worked for some. Tricyclic antidepressants which are an older class have been used and work well but do have a fair number of side effects.
ve currently been diagnosed with Neuropathy. I take Lexapro for depression. They added Elavil and Gabapentin to try to alleviate my symptoms. Here goes the fun part, my symptoms. All opinions are welcome and MS does run in my family.

I was prescribed Vicoden 10/325 for pain as well as flexeril and gabapentin. Neither the flexeril or the gabapentin seem to help with muscle tightness, spasms, or nerve pain. I am seeing my doctor again in two days and I wondered if any one could tell me of medications that have worked for you. I have a high tollerence to medication, most do not make me sleepy at all. I have tried Tizanadine in the past but for some reason that medication gives me bad headaches.
This definitely sounds like Per. Neuropathy. I have it, too. Neurontin (Gabapentin) is the ONLY drug that makes mine bearable. I currently take two 350mg capsules, four times per day. I have a very bad case of the disease, which is common in diabetics and alcoholics. Since I am neither, my Neurologists think mine may be autoimmune related.
Not sure your dose of Cymbalta or Gabapentin… Perhaps you could increase the dosage of one of them??? I used to take Gabapentin, but it caused me to gain weight like there was no tomorrow, so I insisted that I be given something else.
You can also talk to your doctor about Topamax (generic is Topiramate). I was on that for several years and did better than anything else but my neuro wanted me off it, so I agreed to go with the Duloxetine.

if a person with diabetes 2 works out and becomes non diabetic will the neuropathy in there feet and legs go away or once you have it you will always have neuropathy. I had it minor but today was a snow storm and it got like 100 times worse before I kind of ignored it but I really need to do something about this now before it get totally bad.
Currently, the 2 most effective medications for peripheral neuropathy that we have available are gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica). The latter is a newer drug and is more expensive than the first. I generally tend to start with gabapentin and will switch to pregabalin if the gabapentin isn't doing the trick. The mediactions may not take away all of your symptoms, although ideally, they will dampen them considerably.
I am not sure about the weakness of the neuropathy , but gabapentin is one med that can be used for this as well as some anti depression meds.
May I ask, have you had surgery for Chiari or any related condition?

Thank you so much for your response. I am on Gabapentin for the neuropathy, Prilosec for reflux and Fenofibrate for high cholesterol. If I stop taking one of these to see if it is causing the side effects, how long before I would notice an improvement?
i have peripheral neuropathy in my feet and i have horrible pain at nite after dark,i can handle the pain in the day time by staying busy but at night it is unbearable.i am not a diabetic and the cause is unkown,would endocet be a good med to take for the pain.
With the 3 medical issues you have going on, I can see why your dr would want to try neurotin (gabapentin is the generic name). It may well help with your fibro, your neuropathy, any nerve pain in your back and a side benefit CAN be sleep, too (at least when you first go on gabapentin). They usually have you take your first dose at night because it can make you sleepy.
While Gabapentin is used as anticonvulsant, it is also indicated for shingles or postherpetic neuralgiaand also for hyperhidrosis, headaches, diabetic neuropathy, hot flashes, and fibromyalgia. Common side effects of gabapentin include dizziness, somnolence, fatigue, fluid retention, nausea and vomiting. Take as prescribed and check with your doctor if you have any side effects. Last June a semi backed into me on my motorcycle. I had to scramble to jump/crawl out of the way and I believe it jammed my arms into the handle bats in the process. I've already had a spinal fusion. The very same day my left hand/wrist went numb. Within the next week both hands were numb. Over the next few weeks the numbness and tingling spread up my arms. It eventually made its way up to my shoulders across my back and up over my head including my face.
I had a Mri on my neck.
I was on gabapentin for neuropathy. Acyclvior for shingles and canker sores.
