neurontin

Avatar m tn I take 2000mg Gabapentin for Neuropathic pain Relief qid(8000mg daily) and 60mg of Cymbalta daily. I have a broken spine due to my service related injury incurred while serving in the Canadian Forces Regular Forces(Army). I take care of three young children while my wife is at work. I am in a level ten pain 24/7. The Gabapentin gives me a couple hours of level 8 pain in the afternoon. Any suggestions?
Avatar n tn They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia. The only way to know if this medication will help is to try it, but I repeat, it is not used to substitute for opiate treatment, so you will most likely continue your morphine and oxycodone while trying it. Pain management, like football, is a game of inches.
Avatar f tn I became addicted to oxycodone 15mg in 2012 after my first back surgery, obviously I was on them while I was in the hospital for 7days after surgery then took them for about 4 days once I got home. I tried to stop and became sick and realized I was addicted. I go to a pain clinic for my chronic pain. Since then I had surgery on my elbow and just 2 weeks ago I had another back surgery. My oxycodone has never been upped in dosage so of course it doesn't help with the pain.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is a good drug for some things, and not for others. General side affects are things like headaches, stomach pain, dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness---the normal things that can happen when you go on any drug. Most of the time, gabapentin doesn't have extreme ill affects on anyone unless you skip a dose. I do know of people who say the drug can be addicted in high doses. Considering that you're just starting the medication, I wouldn't guess you'll be on a high dose.
Avatar f tn I also use Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation and Therapeutic Dressage (horse back riding) for pain control. A lot of my pain is made worse by a weak core and stress. I have to keep my core strong, stretch, and use mindfulness to keep the stress down.
Avatar f tn So at the end of the day have faith in your own feelings as you know what you are feeling and experiencing and I think you will find that most people find Gabapentin is very helpful for nerve pain and MS symptoms and it is just a matter of finding the dose that gives relief to you personally.
1983221 tn?1333506185 I take both gabapentin and amitriptilyne (Elavil) for my neuropathic foot pain. I started with 300mg gabapentin and worked my way up to 3600mg. I take 1200mg 3X/day. By itself it didn't do that much for my pain. We added 25mg amitriptilyne to the gabapentin and I saw some relief. We upped it to 50mg 1X/day and my pain was gone completely! I guess I'm luck not to have any side effects from either drug.
Avatar f tn I'm taking gabapentin for TN and occipital neuralgia (I assume is probably lessens the tingling in my arm and leg as well) and most of the time I have reasonable pain control. However, there are times when the pain really flares up and I'm not sure if there's anything I can do for that. I don't know if gabapentin (neurontin) has a "short term" effect--e.g. if I took an extra dose, would it help?
700067 tn?1332989283 What can I do about pain control? The pain in my hips is the worst and makes it very difficult to walk. Once I do get out and walk even a little bit, the pain is so excruciating that it takes me out for the rest of the day. I also have problems with tissue tearing internally. When I had my hysterectomy performed, my OBGYN said that he had never seen such "poor quality" of tissue. He said whenever he tried to clamp it or move it, it disintegrated and tore in his hands.
Avatar n tn I am a 50 yr old male. I was prescribed Gabapentin for neurological pain management by the VAMC in Tampa, Florida. According to some post I've read, Gabapentin is a med that one must be weened off of. I've been taking Gabapentin off and on to help with pain so I can sleep. I don't take it all the time because of the side effects. Sometimes, but not all the time, I feel like I'm having a bad hangover after the medication wears off.
2034625 tn?1392643292 A few weeks ago at 11 am I was having some TN pain, and discovered I had not taken my 8 am meds, which includes 300mg Gabapentin. I am convinced Gabapentin works for me, and I am at the correct dosage...for now. If your Doc had ever experienced TN he would not postpone a prescription to treat it, guaranteed!
11079760 tn?1483386130 Although I still have side effects from low-dose naltrexone (super sensitive to everything), they are dose related, and I do achieve pretty much 90-100% pain control with it. It was a game changer for me. Typical side effects are insomnia and increased spasticity -- I get both over 3.5 mg/day. Just an idea (although I concur with caregiver -- please make sure you know what kind of pain you are dealing with!).
1858011 tn?1319837353 I have been taking 1200mg a day of gabapentin for 2 1/2 years and same for the zanaflex i take 1/2 tablet by mouth three times a day and 2 at bedtime. 8496079 tn?1398412516 Has the drug Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) worked for Fibromyaglia pain within a few days of taking this medication for the horrible pain from the Fibro? I was put on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) yesterday by my doctor for my Fibromyalgia Condition in addition to the Norco 7.5/325 I can take up to 4 pills day as needed for the massive pain I'm in.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old son was perscribed gabapentin/neurontin (in combination with a few other drugs) for his nerve pain. It definitely helped but the side affects are a huge trade-off. He gained a considerable amount of weight too but I attruibuted that mostly to the fact that all he did was eat, sleep & be foggy - and wasn't able to be his normal active self. He's since been off the meds and the weight has come off too as he's now able to resume most his normal activities.
Avatar f tn The only possible scenario that I can think of to use gabapentin for balance is that it is given for neuropathy (nerve pain ) and the doc thinks perhaps the nerve pain will go away and you will have increased proprioception (the sense that tells us where are body parts, i.e. arms and legs, feet, etc. in relation to the ground and other body parts). Still I think that's a HUGE stretch, even off-label.
Avatar f tn Welcome Jules! Glad you found us. In case you haven't find them yet we have Health Pages in the upper right hand corner of this page , next to the yellow icon, they are filled with a wealth of information. Many members on the the board take amitriptyline (Elavil) or nortriptyline (Pamelor) to their does of gabepentin. It seems to be a good adjunct to the gabapentin and increases its effectiveness. There are other drugs that are used "off-label" for pain control in MS.
Avatar n tn Hi and welcome to MedHelp. I also take percocet along with neurontin (gabapentin). The gabapentin is very similar to lyrica. I drink coffee 4-5 days per week and I haven't encountered any issues and I have been on percocet for almost a year and gabapentin for almost 2 years. I don't think there are any severe reactions when coffee is mixed with percocet or lyrica or both.
Avatar f tn So, this is a wierd sypmptom that has been happening lately. If I wake up at all during the middle of the night, I will end up having to take a 100mg of the gabapentin whcih takes away thep pain, but leaves me so tired and drugged, that I can' function, shower, anythingh for hours.; This happens when my husband is getting ready for work and says goodbye and that wakes me and caused the nerve pain to start. Its usually a horrible aching pain that occurs in right upper chest area/armpit too.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin works for some people and not for others. Compression of a nerve or nerve root typically isn’t helped that much by medications unless the compression is relieved first. Medications can help ease pain but not numbness once the compression is relieved.
Avatar f tn For the most part this dose has been adequate for my pain control but there are some days that I take a third dose. I believe most people would begin to notice a dose is due about 6-8 hours after the last one they had. As with drugs like baclofen though, blood levels fo the drug build when gabapentin is taken on a regular basis. In that case the return of pain might be more subtle. Hope something in here helps.
Avatar m tn My wife Doreen has been prescribed Gabapentin to control this bile duct pain. After reading the info. leaflet she is hesitant to take these capsules. Can anyone advise. thankyou.
Avatar m tn It sounds like you are on appropriate medications but are they at high enough doses to control your pain adequately? You may never be pain free but your pain should be more controlled. My suggestion would be that you discuss an increase or maybe a change of medications with your physician. I'm sorry that I can't think of another suggestion that would be beneficial for you but others will post and offer more input. Please let us know how you are doing.
