A study done in 2009 by the Department of Behavioral Science at Eastern Virginia Medical School concluded that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, are one type of prescription medication effective for this disorder. Some common SSRIs include
fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine and sertraline. The study listed other pharmacologic treatments for skin picking, such as inositol, clomipramine, doxepin, inositol, lamotrigine, olanzapine, naltrexone and riluzole.
