Common Questions and Answers about Elisa test for proteins

Avatar m tn I had an encounter around 5 weeks ago where I performed oral sex on a female prostitute in Dubai (she was Asian although I am not sure from where exactly). The vaginal sex was protected. I was worried so I got tested for all STD's. Everything was negative except for the HIV ELISA test which showed a weak positive result (average of 1.20 against a cutoff of 1.0). As you can imagine I am freaking out right now and am having trouble functioning/eating/sleeping and working.
Avatar m tn 1. My ELISA may be positive after 3 months? I have to take another test after 180 days? These symptoms can be acute HIV (particularly the increase of liver enzymes, increased blood proteins and pains in the spleen)? Please help me, I am very sad! Sorry for my english, I'm from Brazil!
Avatar m tn Yes, 3 months it the wait time for testing for conclusive.
Avatar f tn Commercial tests rely on a single antigen gG1 for HSV1 and gG2 for HSV2 which are isolated viral proteins that have been identified as predominantly only attracting type specific antibodies but not for everybody. For a small number of people the antigen will attract other proteins in the blood, such as what happened for you.
Avatar f tn It uses all of the proteins produced by the virus in the test. The blood is introduced to the full array of viral proteins and then separated into four different sized bands. This is a comprehensive assessment of whether there are antibodies in your blood reacting to the virus. It is a very detailed process and the results are subjectively assessed by three scientists. You can confidently report to your doctor that they have witnessed a false positive.
Avatar m tn Hello, im suffering from systematic candida for several years. I went to do an HIV rapid test using a blood samples, waited 30min and found NEGETIVE. the lab also sent my blood to an ELISA test and im waiting for the results. I'V heard that systematic candida can cause an alisa test the be false-positive or inconclusive, that beacause candida antibodies are very similar to hiv antibodies . is that true?
Avatar n tn Hey, You probably had an ELISA test. Levels below 0.8-1.0 are considered to be negative. Why would then a negative test result in a value? Thats your question as I got it. Well in the plasma you have several other antibodies and proteins that can lead to unspecific binding so called "bakground noise". So don't worry.. if you were positive you probably would have had a much higher value, like 3.8 or 5.4. Hope it was helpful.
Avatar m tn Positive for HSV-2, negative for others ( HIV, HSV1, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea ). The herpes test kit used was HerpeSelect ELISA for HSV-1 and HSV-2. Specifically, the HerpeSelect 1 ELISA result was 0.35 and the HerpeSelect 2 ELISA result was 8.79 I repeated the tests in September 2009. A different provider who also used HerpeSelect ELISA. Same results as the testing in May - postive for HSV-2, negative for all others.
Avatar f tn Dismiss the WB, it should not have been done. Antibody test done at 3 months is conclusive. Your test at 11 weeks is not going to change.
Avatar n tn You have to wait 28 days for the elisa / duo so test then. Antibody needs 3 months.
Avatar f tn That's a decription of the ELISA test method that is common in commercial testing.
Avatar f tn Hello Dr. My last exposure was more than a year ago and it was unprotected sex. I had an ELISA test performed through quest lab and it came back "repeatedly reactive". The lab then proceeded with a Western blot, which was Negative. Now, they have sent my blood off to another lab so that it can get tested with what is called an immunoblot. My doctor explained that the western blot looks just for hiv 1 and that the immunoblot looks just for hiv 2.
Avatar m tn Hello and thank you in advance for your response. I recently had a HSV2 euroimmun test. The results are as follows: Positive (23.3RU/ml) which is marginally higher than the cut off for a positive (22ru/ml). I gather that Euroimmun has fairly good sensitivity but slightly lower specificity. Any chance this could be a false positive? Never had blisters or lesions on my genital but I do get tinglings from time to time.
Avatar m tn people keep mentioning the tests as though there is one ELISA test for HIV1 and another ELISA test for HIV2. This is not the case, a single ELISA test is looking for antibodies produced for HIV1 and HIV2. In the UK specifically I now know that whether a third or fourth generation test is used they are both testing for HIV1 and HIV2 antibodies (in the fourth generation the anitgen part is only detecting HIV1 I believe).
Avatar f tn The clinic did not do the elisa test only a western blot for hiv-1 which came back with an inderminate result showing non viral bands only. All other antibodies or proteins like p24 showed up negative. Even the doctor was confused and said she was going to have to call the lab because she has never seen that in her 20 year career. I've been a nervous wreck. I've been faithful to one man for years but suspect he's been sleeping around.
Avatar m tn t the ELISA be positive because it looks for all the antibodies in the Western Blot? I am scared to get tested again and the ELISA will find this p55 and I have to go through a series of testing and waiting. 2) If I am not infected, do you know any reason why my blood would have p55 in it? 3) Finally, since my two western blots were done two weeks apart, if I were infected the western blot should have shown a progress in the number of antibodies, correct?
Avatar f tn Doctors offer WB and ELISA at the same time in some countries where the patient pays for all his tests. In Canada they dont offer the WB test as patient is not paying for it, and the health ministry does the WB only when ELISA is positive.
Avatar m tn When persons are tested for HIV they typically are tested in a two step procedure, first with an ELISA which is a general test for antibodies to many proteins which are part of HIV. if this initial test is positive, before it is called "positive" a second test is performed- typically the Western blot test. In this test we can see which of the HIV proteins the person's antibodies are reacting to. If people have HIV, they typically have antibodies to many proteins.
1554517 tn?1297418744 Last set of tests were an Elisa (no antibodes) a western blot (no proteins etc) and a pcr (no virus) but due to the perfect nature of symptoms inc pharyngitus for a year etc - can't move on
Avatar n tn One can go for a HIV test at the 1st month and repeat at the 3rd month for a conclusive result. Both the ELISA and rapid test do follow this criteria and a positive test will need a further screening by a Western Blot, which is the confirmatory test for HIV.
Avatar n tn We just had all of our blood work done, and one of the men got an indeterminate result on his Elisa test. His Western blot and viral load were both negative. His partner also had a neg Elisa and WB; he has not had the viral load test done yet. Previous to this, both men have a history of negative results. From my understanding, both men practice safe sex with each other, and are monogomous in regards to high risk activities...
Avatar f tn Quick question for y'all. Are proteins living organisms? And do they die of exposed to air?
Avatar m tn Though I was quite confident in the 38 day negative result, the reason i paid for expert opinion is that the contributors for the HIV community forum (Teak, amongst others) are quite adamant in that the proper way to get HIV antibody testing is to get an ELISA test first, then followed by a WB only after a positive ELISA, never a standalone western blot, and i couldn't find many posts by people who have only received WB tests.
