Avatar n tn My two dogs were diagnosed 2 months ago with giardia. They were given baytril and some worming medication that I can't remember (starts with p?) and packages of fortiflora. All seemed well. No diarrea then a week and 1/2 ago the diarrea started again. They began with baytril and the worming stuff again but this time the stools just won't get firm and they are loose again. I pulled them off regular food and am just feed rice with chicken with fortiflora.
Avatar m tn My dog has had giardia. My vet doesn't believe in fenbendazole as a treatment for it. He says, based on some research that was being done at LSU when he was in vet school there, that fenbendazole for giardia just doesn't work. He uses metronidazole (Flagyl). We treated my dog with that, and she hasn't had a recurrence. The Merck Veterinary Manual states that "Metronidazole (25 mg/kg, PO, bid for 5-7 days) is ~65% effective in eliminating Giardia spp from infected dogs.
Avatar m tn I am wanting to know if it is bad for dogs to eat wild bunny poop? My dogs seem to consider the little pellets like they are candy. These rabbits do not have diarrhea. I just had the dogs stools checked and they are negative. They get a monthly dose of Ivermectin. We may have to stick to the road for walks and skip the grass.
Avatar f tn This being said, after much research this is what I was thinking of going, but am nervous as none of these remedies are FDA approved for dogs (i of course will check with his vet but i find that many times hearing other pet owner’s experience is much more beneficial as every dog is different). PLAN OF ACTION: -take him off the vet food.
172023 tn?1334672284 Cheng mentioned that even with a clean flush, there can be tiny bits of feces and bacteria left behind, and that giardia can be spread from humans to dogs in that manner. Is there any chance you or any of your family members also have it? Could be you've got a vicious cycle of infection going back and forth through the toilet. ??!!
Avatar n tn They tested him for Coccidea (which he had when at the breeder) And also for Giardia. He had Giardia. They put him on antibiotics and he has felt much better almost immediately. He hasn't had a poop accident since we started the meds. She said he was bordering on malnourished - with his build (bulldog) it was hard to see how skinny he was. We thought he was just a slighter build than our other bullie.
Avatar n tn I am so sorry about your dog. I do not use the giardia vaccine in my practice. The giardia vaccine is not even meant to prevent the giardiasis but is administered as an adjunct to treatment of the disease. Giardia is ubiquitous in the environment, is found in normal animals, and usually does not cause any problems, because normal flora in the dog can hold the disease in check.
Avatar n tn I was transporting a dog in the back of my car for a rescue, who turns out to have been in the middle of treatments for Giardia. He's been on panacur and last tested positive on Jan 9th. I stupidly put my own dog in the back of the car on the same bedding. He must have been there for roughly an hour. Once I found out, I cursed myself for my lack of brains, put him in the back seat ( not the very back like before), then wiped him with baby wipes. I washed my own hands.
7219853 tn?1389289076 Her stool is normal some days, and when she has an episode, is a pudding consistence, mucousy, and also has had fresh blood in it. Her blood work came back normal, and was tested for parasites as well. She is generally a calm dog, playful at times, and hasn't displayed any other signs of being in pain. I'd love to connect with someone who has gone through the same thing and maybe get some advice as to what I can do to help her.
1028297 tn?1252089571 Yeah i'd suspect giardia honestly...did you just do antibiotics? Usually to treat that they give you flagyl (awful drug...) but if you don't improve you probably do need to get to the ER (hopefully you have insurance) but you probably do have a stomach bug like orangeblossoms said but it could easily be giardia. Make sure you drink fluids just like orange said...

354667 tn?1299137472 Can your doctor CONFIRM, that you have Giardia? There is a stool test for Giardia, did you have that test? I mean, you have to solve this, before thinking about other diagnoses. I hope you have spoken with a doctor about mebendazole (?). Do not ever try to cure yourself with antibiotics by your own.
Avatar n tn I have two full grown boxers and they stay outside and the only thing I feed them is Purina Dog Chow well I have noticed that my dogs stools will be regular for a while then go to diarrhea and it going back and forth with their stools staying hard most of the time. This has been going on since summer with the male and the female just started a few weeks ago.
Avatar f tn I do know that if you have dogs, you can get giardia. One gram of dog poop can contain up to 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, and dog poop is also a common carrier of a lot of bad bacteria, one of which is called Giardia. Humans can get it from loving on their dogs, petting them all the time, and not washing your hands. The symptoms of a human who has Giardia are almost identical to those who have gallbladder issues.
Avatar f tn I am feeling bloated, tired and experiencing changes in my bowel habits (loose stools) for the last 2 months. These symptoms come and go. I went to the Gastroenterologist, she did stool test, blood test and all were normal. I also have history of abnormal paps (ASCUS), HPV negative and colposcopy results were normal. Also, I had two UTIs in the last 2 months. On the first time, I went to the doctor, did an quick exam, which showed an infection and I took Bactrim for 5 days.
Avatar m tn I went back to my GI doctor and he scheduled me for an upper endoscopy and another giardia antigen stool test. The stool test came back negative. However during the upper endo, my doctor took a biopsy of my stomach and duodenum. He also saw a lot of inflammation of the duodenum. The biopsy of the tissue from my duodenum did show giardia under the microscope. I found this out today (01/05/09).
Avatar m tn I went to gastroenterologist a couple months ago and he told me I had Giardia Lamblia which is an intestinal parasite. Avatar f tn In November his stool tested positive giardia. He was treated , In Jan I took him to a specialist for internal medicine, she repeated all of the above test and found nothing. At this point he is till losing weight and his back legs are becoming weak. All though she found nothing with the diagnostics she ran, she noticed an arithymia. he was admitted to the hospital for a week for observation and treated with medications.
