587083 tn?1327120262 With menopause your body stops making estrogen. Eating soy products seems to boost the estrogen a bit, but is that good? I was a regular consumer of soy milk, tofu, edamame and flax seed after menopause. After my diagnosis of breast cancer (estrogen positive) my oncologist recommended I avoid soy products because even the weak phytoestrogens may stimulate cancer cells. Research is not conclusive but better to be safe. As the addage goes, 'all things in moderation.
1039061 tn?1257878294 I have read in these forums that soy is not good for people that have thyroid issues. My question is does that include ALL thyroid problems? I had RAI a year ago & I am struggling to lose weight. I wanted to check into medifast just to get a little bit of a jump start on my weight loss. My Dr. Said that I don't have any dietary restrictions but I have heard that soy can compound thyroid issues. That is the last thing I would want to do.
Avatar m tn re already dealing with thryoid issues, as the estrogen levels are still affected by the thryoid and vice versa, whether male or female. It is estrogen in particular that soy affects in a huge way. Dr. Mercola explains more thoroughly and better than I can even begin to repeat why the traditionally fermented soy products are the only soy products that are even safe to consume.

Avatar f tn But, I ate soy meat and drank soy milk. These raise you estrogen. Also I drank bottled water in plastic. WEll laying off of these helped some , got hormone free reg milk and cut down on soy meats but it took taking Indole-3 carbinol 400 mg. a day to work. Everytime I try to quit taking this migraines return. So I know it its working. Now maybe 1 day of my period or rarely two I will have a migraine and sometimes not at all. If I do have them now they are less severe.
Avatar f tn Also, just so you are aware, “natural” hormone replacement has the same risks of estrogen exposure as “clinical” HRT. Estrogen is estrogen, whether it is from soy or the lab. This is why we recommend that women with estrogen receptor positive breast cancer avoid HRT as well as soy and other “natural” estrogen products.
Avatar f tn Everytime I eat a food that contains any amount of soy, soybean oil, soy sauce, soy lecithin, or hydrogenated soybean oil I will have a seizure. I know that soy is estrogen. It takes about 45 minutes for my body to metablize the soy and cause me to have a seizure. I had a total hysterectomy in 1988 and I have no progesterone in my system. I also think that the soy causes my body to retain fluids, and excess fluids in my body will cause me to have seizures. Is my analysis correct?
Avatar n tn By ingesting other estrogens, there is a theoretical concern that a person could be interfering with the therapeutic effect of reducing estrogen and, in fact, give the tumor the food it needs to grow. It is not clear, however, that the types of plant estrogens found in soy and other foods are harmful to women being treated for breast cancer. Oncologists vary in their opinions on this, but many do not restrict foods.
Avatar f tn Please tell me, how can I know if I have estrogen receptor cells active? Why does it affect some women and not others? Can extra bad estrogen cause cancer, or would one have to have cancer type cells? I just don't understand anything. My results will come out tomorrow. In the meantime, I have no peace of mind. Please help me. Thanks.
1065748 tn?1255876527 How long did you do the lidquid? I'm taking the caps & it says that you have to be on it for at least 12wks. Have you tried topical progestrone or Evening PrimRose?
Avatar f tn Here is her whole post, I'm not saying it's true but I'm going to research more just from reading it ************************************************ For this issue I want to share some information on soy, that many may not be aware of.Since soy is natural product, grown from the earth, one would think it's good for you. All the advertisements sure make it sound healthy, huh? Well let me give you some information that might make you think twice about that next soy burger.
363281 tn?1643235611 HMMMM, this is depressing, I have been searching and searching and I can NOT find any brand of the Co gel that does NOT have soy in it. I am wondering now what to do? I think the powder form is a waste of time. Guess I will have to continue taking what I have and put up with the occasional tummy aches. Dang it.
Avatar n tn Estrogen doesn't cause breast cancer but it does feed it. If estrogen was the cause of breast cancer more young women would be being diagnosed with it when their estrogen levels are at their highest. Most diagnosis are made in post menopausal woman. There is one theory of thought that it may be estrone that really feeds breast cancer. Estrone is what our fat cells produce after menopause. Estradiol is what our ovaries made in our 20's and 30's.
Avatar n tn I had a radical hysterectomy followed by chemotherapy for ovarian cancer in '07. I have had a terrible time losing weight, I cry easily, I have hot flashes, and insomnia. I cannot take HRT due to my cancer and family history of breast cancer. Are there any natural products I can use to help any of these symptoms? Will soy milk be of any help or am I putting myself at risk of breast cancer.
Avatar f tn I am a vegetarian and have always eaten soy products. One of the benefits of soy is that it breaks down to a type of estrogen substitute. I have never taken estrogen replacement and my levels have always been great. Try a few soy products (ice cream, appetizers, supplements) and see if you feel better. Also, have you MD test your glucose levels. Both higher and lower levels will make you sweat!!
Avatar f tn I suspected that might be what it was for. The wild yam doesn't really have estrogen in it; it's merely a substance that mimics estrogen. I was on an estrogen patch for quite some time after my hysterectomy, but finally went off that, too. My doctor suggested black cohosh to help manage symptoms. Yes, it's important to read labels carefully, and understand what they say.
Avatar f tn One study found that Chinese ate approximately 2 teaspoons to 2 tablespoons of soy a day. Soy is not eaten in large amounts in Asian countries; rather, it is used as a condiment. Most of the Western food sources contain soy protein isolate, which is a highly processed, devitalized, and toxic food source that needs to be avoided! No newborn child should be fed a soy-based formula.
1310814 tn?1310654901 This is just my opinion but any processed soy could mess with your normal hormone levels as it is like estrogen can mess with your estrogen levels. Any natural soy should be ok.
167426 tn?1254086235 I know this might not help but the 'good' soy herbal supplements should have it. I used to work in the testing lab for Blackmores Nutriceutical company in Australia and used to actually assay genistein (and a couple of other isoflavones) in their supplement. I am not sure that this would translate in the US.
Avatar m tn Last week is when she lost the weight, and this past week, she has gained 6 pounds. Low and behold, the CoQ10 has soy in it! She also has very coarse hair and acne on her forehead which she never had before. Could this be causing her symptoms: weight gain, bloating, constipation, acne, coarse hair, severe headaches, poor concentration, shortness of breath, swelling of the ankles and legs, irregular period(she hasn't had a period in a year and she hasn't grown taller since she was 12).
Avatar f tn I think that we all need to be careful with some of the herbal products in so far as we often don't know where our levels are of hormones. For instance, we can load up on products that stimulate estrogen (such as soy and other herbal preps) which can upset a balance needed between estrogen and progesterone. During menopause, both levels drop but, progesterone drops the most. So, while our estrogen levels fall by a certain percentage, our progesterone may drop far more.
Avatar f tn Common Western foods and beverages are fermented, such as The soy used in our country, however, is primarily non-fermented soy in the form of soy-protein isolate and soy milk. It is the non-fermented form of soy that is causing so many of the problems with soy foods. The soy industry would have you believe that Asians eat lots of soy. Since Asians suffer less chronic illness than most Western people, then soy must be a healthy food. How much soy do Asians actually eat?
209987 tn?1451935465 As usual, I have a responsibility to contradict Gymdandee on the soy issue. While some are allergic to soy, the evidence of soy's harmful effects are theoretical and confined to those of western European ancestry. The concerns were originated by the meat industry, with government backing ironically, to counter the increase in vegetable protein consumption in the US.
Avatar f tn I am not a total expert, but I have recently learned that my habit of eating lots of soy products (soy milk, soy meat, etc) mimics estrogen in the body. I also found out that certain chemicals in soft plastic water bottles (which I had drank out of every day for a year at work) 'leak' into the water and also 'mimic' estrogen. Even stress hormones can lead to further imbalances.
Avatar f tn shtml Transdermal estrogen does not raise HDL and usually does not lower LDL cholesterol as much as oral estrogen, and it does not affect triglycerides, so it may be a better choice in women with elevated triglyceride levels. Avoiding the first pass through the liver also may prevent the increased risk of blood clots and gallbladder problems associated with oral estrogens.
