Common Questions and Answers about Diabetic diet and carbs

diabetes

Avatar f tn I have been diabetic for 15 years. I have never been on a diabetic diet. I would like to know what I can eat, like how many carbs, fat, fruit, etc. Please help.
Boy Diabetes means your Body can not control the rise of BG. What causes BG to rise... Carbohydrates Carbs raise BG ALL carbs Whole wheat, brown rice, most fruits, potato... all carbs raise BG Steak has very few carbs so it wont effect your BG much, however the mashed potatoes will send BG through the roof. Google "low carb hi fat diet" (LCHF) LOTS of diabetics can control there BG by eating LCHF diet without meds.

Avatar n tn Hey there! I don't think you need to limit yourself to a certain amount of carbs per day. I would recommend trying a high protein and high fiber diet. Also try meal planning. Having a plan will ensure that you aren't going overboard on carbs, and knowing how many carbs you'll have for each meal will help you plan your bolus more correctly.
Avatar m tn I concur completely with WaveRiders advice to you. I also want to reinforce her recommendation of Dreamfield's pasta. I am a diabetic and I love it, my wife is not diabetic and she loves the Dreamfield's. I serve it to my guest and they can't taste any differences. It cost a little more than regular pasta, but my and your health are worth the extra change.
4569680 tn?1359580401 I tried severely cutting down on my carbs for a week or two awhile ago, and felt tired and listless. That being said, every body is different, and some bodies just don't do well with carbs. It's great that you have pinpointed carbohydrates as something your body doesn't like and adjusted your diet accordingly. If the OP finds that she continues to feel off colour, then maybe she is like you and would do well to limit her carb intake even further than I originally thought.
Avatar f tn Hi, thanks for the answer. I already had the thyroid test and I don't have any problem with that, is just the hiperinsulinim and the PCOs, and also I've already been treated with medication but my doctor said that I don't needed anymore.
Avatar n tn What are some great quick and easy meals for breakfast lunch and dinner that are super low carb... I am a type one diabetic and because of the medicine im on its hard to loose weight... But this has worked in the past and I am bored of eating the same meals over and over ... Thank you !
Avatar f tn No starchy or sugary foods like potatoes, rice, pasta and flour. And no low-fat or fat-free processed foods (they are loaded with sugars, carbs and chemicals). Stay away from margarine and other fake manmade fats. Fats containing high proportion of omega 3 is the healthier option (like salmon, olive oil, nuts, coconut, etc) Eat real whole food more than processed food.
Avatar n tn Dear winkster, Actually a diabetic diet is really only what a healthy diet would be for people without diabetes. And fruits are a part of that even though they have sugar it get metabolized like any other carbohydrates.
Avatar n tn Lower carb foods will include meat, non-sweetened dairy (cheese, yoghurt, butter, cream), eggs, nuts, and non-starchy vegetables. Unfortuantely fruits and grains are very high in carbs, and may need to be limited by many. Hope this helps you. Please ask more questions if you need.
107693 tn?1252864443 For me I find I can reduce the dawn effect, by limiting how many carbs I eat. On a low carb diet I can normalise my fasting blood sugars. but on high calorie and/or carb it will go high. I find that a very low carb diet is far more effective at controlling blood sugars than the typical high carb diet that many with diabetes adopt. (ie. American Diabetic Association would say I should eat about 240 g of carbs per day.
2066946 tn?1345523888 Check my blood 2hrs later then a snack of a granola bar 22-36g of carbs and half a banana. Lunch sandwich with wheat bread and maybe a cup of fruit. Check bold two hrs later then another snack of maybe something with total carbs of 11-22g then dinner something total carbs 11-22g and something 23-37g. Check blood then a snack carbs 11-22g. Always have protein with each meal that could ne nuts ir cheese or.meat. hope this helps. Its hard to explain while using my phone. Any questions message me.
Avatar n tn Many dieticians feel that the extremely low carbohydrate count in the Atkins diet can lead eventually to heart disease because the diet is higher in fat than a normal diet with a balance of fruits and grains in addition to smaller portions of meat. So any extreme in diet may be less than ideal in the long run for overall health than the old-fashioned well-balance diet that diabetics are encouraged to eat.
Avatar f tn Northcarolina1 How did the HCG diet work out for you Im a type 2 diabetic and i'm thinking about trying it out.
Avatar m tn Also, Google the Glycemic Index to understand which carbs are good and which are bad. Caution on restricting too much carbs as the potential for kidney damage can surface. The key to all of this is test, test, test with your home glucose meter. "Also, I like weight training ... is it good in such a situation." Yes, daily 30-60 minute exercise helps burn off excess glucose.
Avatar f tn One month ago, I eliminated simple sugars and non whole grain flours and carbs from my diet. I have lost over 10% of my body weight. My mood is more stable and at normal levels. My libido did a 180. My unwanted hair is coming in thinner. Discovering that polycystic ovarian syndrome may be insulin related has saved my body, my mind, and my relationship with my boyfriend. Thank you!
370181 tn?1595629445 These are the good guys. The simple ones found in table sugar and processed foods are the bad guys. For a diabetic diet, complex carbohydrates from vegetables and whole grains are best, as they take more time to break down and contain fiber, which is extremely important for preventing heart disease, promoting weight loss and helps prevent the progression of diabetes type 2.
212161 tn?1599427282 Hi, your fasting levels are diabetic (i think the cut off is about 126), and your post eating are too high. They should always be less than 140 and ideally even lower than 120. So I think you need to work harder at controlling blood sugars (diet - lower carb is best), exercise and weight loss. If you can't manage with these you need to ask your doctor about meds to help.

Avatar n tn for breakfast you can have 2 to 3 net carbs, lunch 3 to 4 net carbs, and for dinner 4 to 5 net carbs. Of course i ususally only have 3 to 4 for lunch and 3 to 4 for dinner. They have put me on a 1800 calorie diet, but i ususally only eat around 1200, but only because im just not that hungry. Also you are supposed to eat about every 4 hours. so for snack you can have 1 to 2 net carbs. a good snack is carrots and lt. ranch or pretzel sticks w' 1 tblspoon of peanut butter.
Evillady There is no "diabetic diet" its Carbohydrates that cause BG to rise. So reducing the carbs you eat will help in BG control. So I eat salad and steak, veggies, no fruit (fruit has a lot of carbs) eggs, bacon, cheese, chicken, fish, garlic, and lots of herbs and spices and hot spices. There are other diabetic news groups with recipe sections.
Avatar f tn Hi...i am 25weeks and detected diabetic due to heridity...i am on diet these days and under control...i can't control my food carvings..m real foody...will this effect my baby..in case my glucose goes up ..
Avatar n tn I have been also on low carb diet for awhile now and everything works great. My blood sugar is normalized and I lost considerable weights too. During the first days of my low-carb diet, I felt bloated too. Take this as a transition period, also since low carb means ingesting more vegetables, some vegs like spinach does cause bloating for me. Increasing fat and meat servings help me a lot. Bloating could also mean you lack some enzymes for particular types of food.
