Depo provera and migraines

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and migraines

Avatar f tn I have been on the Depo Provera shot for more than 5 years now. I read that the recommended amount of time that a young woman should be on Depo is only 2 years. I am 20 now and I have been on it since I was 15. I have tried to come off of it once. I bled for about 3 weeks and then got back on it. Currently I have all kinds of pain. Back, kness, neck, arms, and I have migraines. I read about a calcium deficiency when doing research about Depo Provera.
Avatar n tn Just from my experence I was on depo shot and you have signs of pregnancy and are not pregnant and there is no way possiable you could feel you baby kick so soon you don't start feeling any movement until your about 4months pregnant I had a baby about 5months ago tomorrow is 5months and well I didn't actually really feel him move until I was 4months along maybe a lil ferther and I had a m/c on the depo shot the shot was in my systom but the shot killed the baby well anyways I don't think a baby
Avatar n tn I was on Depo Provera for about 8 years when my husband and I decided to try for another baby. I received my last injection in September 2006. I was pregnant by March 07 but miscarried at 5 weeks. We waited until December to try again and just miscarried that one at 9 weeks. After having 2 healthy children with no pregnancy complications, I am led to believe that this is an effect of the Depo injections.
Avatar f tn When I was 16 I got on the depo cause I've heard great things about it and even the drs. said it'd be the best for me because I had major migraines where I would see flashing lights and every part of my body would go numb, the said it was due to my menstral cycle. So I started the depo and I had a period for 2 months one HUGE migraine for 3 days and the everything stopped, Well I have given birth to 2 kids and I wasn't on the depo after the first so this is new to me.
232077 tn?1218426943 I just completed my Lupron Depot therapy and now my GYN wants me to go on Depo Provera because he feels this is the best course of treatment to continue with. I had heard that it caused a great amount of weight gain and asked him about that and he said that the drug does increase your appetite and if you reach for cake instead of fruit you WILL gain weight. I did some research on the net and now I wish I never had because I read so many horror stories about the drug.
Avatar f tn Ive been on the depo shot for a little over 4 years now and want to swith to the implanon implant in your arm. i havent really had any side effects from the shot since the first few months i got it except ongoing migraines all the time. i like the shot im just not planning on getting pregnant anytime soon so i figure i should change so i dont have to worry about getting the shot every few months plus im losing health insurance in a few mmonths and dont wanna have to pay for it all the time.
Avatar n tn How was depo provera for you?
Avatar n tn I was given a shot of depo-provera yesterday...and when I asked about side affects all I was told was nausea, headache, and dizziness. After reading quite a few articles online, it seems there are a lot more serious side affects than I was led to believe. I've been having lots of chest pain and shortness of breath, but the doctor doesn't seem to think it's related to the shot.
432411 tn?1206475709 I took depo provera for about 6 years, starting in 2000. Just over three months after I stopped taking the shots I developed a nodule in my neck which was eventually diagnosed as thyroid cancer. I have absolutely no history of thyroid problems of any kind in family and I had had no problems before the depo.
Avatar f tn I used to take Bcp and also depo provera and suffered from migraines since the age of 13. I was never told that Bcp was not a wise choice. I'm 37 now and haven't taken any form of bc for 10 yrs. I still get migraines but any more or less than while on Bcp. I guess you should go with what you are comfortable doing and what your doctor suggests. There are so many different reasons people get migraines. Some of mine are food related.
Avatar n tn here is my web site and depo group web address. please feel free to take a look and ask me questions!!! love...kimmie

Avatar f tn I will never go on Depo Provera again. My daughter was on Depo Provera at college, and discontinued the shot and has lost that weight and is thin again.'s free site has helped me keep up with my carb intake, and also tells me how many calories, how much fat etc. I use. It does this automatically when I put my food in for the day. Also Magic Bus has a forum where you can learn how to lose weight quick and even post on a challenge to keep you honest and responsible.
Avatar n tn Well I got my period immediately after the first pack, went and saw the main doctor and was told that the resident was uninformed about the side effects of Depo, and they were foolish to tell me that I had PCOS. It ABSOLUTELY was an effect of Depo. I've been regular ever since! Like I said, you should be fine. If it takes you a little longer than you were hoping to get back to normal don't freak out.
730465 tn?1281613518 I drink like 1 -2 cups of coffee a day and I'm on the depo provera shot and recently had a baby 3 months ago. I 've never had migrianes like these ones. Should I tell my doctor before i know the causes the migaines or after?
932329 tn?1245432435 Hi Ladies, I recently went to my local family planning clinic and received the Depo provera shot. That was on 12/15/09. No more than ten minutes after I received the shot I got a migraine. It didn't last long but I noticed that the next couple of days I was feeling some what nauseous. I do consider my self to be somewhat anxious at times, and I can get depressed. But I've never been diagnosed. And I can handle my self pretty well.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed at 16 with PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and I got a Depo shot June 3rd of 2010 in an attempt to force my hormonal imbalance to regulate. All was well for the first month, then the excruciating migraines, cramps, mood swings and severe weight gain came on (40lbs in one month!!!) and my hair began to fall out. So when Sept. 3rd came about, I chose NOT to get another shot. And that very afternoon, my period began. It ended on Jan. 3rd of 2011.
Avatar f tn So I got an ultrasound done and was told I had P.C.O.S. So I got really upset and blamed it on the shot and wanted a second opinion, so I went to another docotr and without actually checking me out gave me Beyaz to regulate my period. It was working great and used it for about 6 months. I decided to stop it because we want another baby, and the last I stopped taking Beyaz was July 30, 2011. Which is over a month ago and have not gotten my period yet. I'm really upset and nervous.
Avatar f tn Im now 38 i have 3 to 4 menses a year and i have migraines, depression, cramps monthly , and a host of other symptoms. What can i do? I really wanted children and now i probably will never have them.
280418 tn?1306329510 I stopped the pill and started Depo Provera injections, and the migraines ceased. Now, 10 years later, they started again. I have had 3 in two weeks. Interestingly enough, I had a couple this summer (hadn't been on the pill in years). I started the pill (Yaz) this Jan. and now the migraines have really increased in frequency. I stopped the pill last night to see if they at least decrease in frequency. Does any research support an increase/onset of migraines with taking the pill?
Avatar n tn She told me to never eat anything white (except chicken). Well her advice worked. It's something about the Depo Provera and and inability to metabolize carbs while Depo is still hiding in your tissues. She told me to eat this way until I lost the weight I want, and that then I could eat bread, salad, and the foods I love again. She also said the weight will not come back, as the depo will be gone. So I look forward to that in another month or so. I have already lost 45 lbs!
Avatar n tn Ok I am a day late here, but I hope you get this and it can be of help, I was on Depo for 3 years and when I went off I got AF pretty fast but then it has been irregular since. I was off everything for the year after depo and never really had a normal peroid. THen I went back on the pill and even that didnt really regulate it. It regulated the start date a little but some months would be heavy, others light, sometimes it would last one day and others it could last a week.
Avatar f tn In October, I got my first shot of Depo-Provera. I know several women on depo and they have all told me they have had the same experience: no periods, no spotting and no other side effects whatsoever. My experience has been horrible. For the first 6 weeks, all was well, no bleeding/spotting and no other symptoms. A few weeks ago, however, I began spotting. Every day it became heavier.
Avatar f tn 3 days ago, we learned that the left cyst had shrunk considerably and the right cyst was gone. I gladly took my second shot of Depo and went on my way. I have had an ongoing migraine since the day after the shot (2 days) and began researching this drug. Everything I read says that I should not be getting this shot. I had migraines prior to this, but over the past 3 months they have intensified greatly. My readings also revealed that Depo can cause clots! I'm already high risk for clots, so wth!
363110 tn?1340924019 Hey ladies, I thought I'd put this warning out there since many women DO NOT KNOW about a certain risk with Depo. Depo Provera has been given a Black Box warning label from the FDA because it can cause bone density lost. The makers reccomend that after 3 years of being on depo you begin getting your Bone Density checked 1x a year. Because bone density loss can lead to osteoporosis or brittle bones. Some doctors reccomend Depo for no longer than 3 years because of this risk.
Avatar n tn My body was having a lot of complications to birth control over the several years that I was using it (six years, in which I tried pills, the patch and depo provera) and finally when my body was convinced that I was pregnant after using Depo for almost two years, I decided to quit taking contraceptives (per my Physician’s suggestion).
Avatar n tn I developed a blood clot post operatively in my leg and was also on bc pills which I had to stop. Another gyn had put me on depo-provera (which I guess was a no-no) and from what I was told that once you've developed a clot your likely to get them again and that's what happened.
Avatar f tn So I've been on Depo Provera for nearly a year ; I'm due for my 4th shot in one month. My boyfriend and I typically use condoms when we have sex, but since I'm on birth control, there are times when we don't. Like Valentines Day. This was roughly 5 weeks ago. One week after Valentines Day, we had sex again, unprotected. That day, though, I started what seemed like an extended period (lasted almost four weeks). I assumed it was from the Depo, like always, and paid it no true attention.
902536 tn?1326917850 I was told in some women it could take up to 1 year for it to leave your system and another year to conceive in all honesty i HATE depo-provera and will never take it again for as long as i live
