436973 tn?1217947089 The past couple of days I've noticed my cat has a lot of dandruff. she has had a little flakiness before, but this is quite a bit. Is this something I should be concerned about?
1608004 tn?1390770990 All you need to do is go to your local pet store and buy a special shampoo for cats for dandruff, itchiness, and dry skin. And, you can buy some salmon oil or omega 3 oil for cats and give her a half teaspoon a day in her food. This should really help a lot. I have done it myself and my cat looks great!
Avatar n tn Bird mites have to be treated with a bug bomb and the bird or rodent nest removed. Pet mites(or walking dandruff) look like tiny white dandruff that moves. This is treated with a strong flea/mite shampoo weekly for 4 weeks plus the carpet/upholstery must be treated with a flea carpet spray weekly for 4 weeks.
Avatar m tn My 7 yr old female cat has developed what appears to be dandruff thick skin flakes that slough off. Is this a cat's allergy or a dietary problem?
Avatar m tn I am aware of topical medication for mites --Revolution being one-- but are there oral ones, specifically for cats to help combat mites? For the record, the cats don't appear to be infested themselves. I don't see excessive itching, bald spots, mange, etc. Are there other symptoms to look for, and how may I go about treating them? I sprinkled DE outside on the ground where they congregate and in their outdoor housing. I know DE works with fleas, but I'm not sure about mites.
Avatar f tn It should be very easy for your vet to diagnose ear mites. a little mineral oil in the ear (to trap the mites) and then examining a swab under the microscope is all that is needed. you will be able to see the mites swimming around and then the correct medication can be prescribed. If the mite test is negative then a swab can be looked at under the microscope for yeast or bacteria; both of these cause ear infections and should be treated specifically.
784128 tn?1236278645 Thanks 4 answering my question both my cats sleep with me and my daugther so now i wont worry my cats prince and patches love to sleep close to our face i still wanted to be able to give them the attention they love your answer was helpful
277836 tn?1359666174 Dandruff is just the shedding of dead skin cells to expose new cells and is not only normal but necessary. If the shedding is excessive, it may indicate a prior buildup of dead cells that were not properly shed. I agree with others that shampooing is not beneficial and dries out the skin. Frequent light brushing is far better for removing dead cells as well as stimulating oil production.
Avatar f tn How long does it take to get rid of ear mites and worms. And is it a simple blood test to determine a thyroid problem in a cat.A friend gave me a cat(Coby , a big loveable black cat) , because she was moving and didn't tell me he had health issues. I have been using ear mite medicine that I got from pet co and went on line and got herbal wormer. but it seems like it is taking forever it's been a month. And Coby gave earmites to my white cat Appollo.

Avatar n tn Have a vet do a skin scraping of the bald spots to make sure it's not mange. If it's mange, the mite that causes it will show up on the microscope slide and the appropriate treatment can be instituted. You want to have this done as soon as possible, since some types of mange can be transmitted to humans. Demodectic mange is caused by a mite found in the skin of all dogs. Sometimes the mites begin localized infestations and that's when hair loss results.
Avatar n tn Your cat might have ear mites. Look in your cats' ears, if you see black dots or black junk in his ears, then that's what it is. You can buy ear mite med in any store, no need to see the vet for this. If there's no black stuff in the ears, then I'd take the cat to the vet.
372328 tn?1214776427 i posted a question not long ago about this. All my indoor cats somehow got ear mites. Well the vet gave us REVOLUTION. Its suppose to be a 1 time thing. So we got home and put it on all our cats, I even went out and got baby oil to put in their ears to suffocate the mites too. Its been about 2 weeks and my youngest kitten is still scratching her ears. Why isnt this stuff working?? My other cats seem to be ok now. We cant afford to take her to the vet.
1786778 tn?1314987818 t seen any dandruff on her, but my other cat has dandruff. So could it just be the air is dry? This is our first winter/spring in this apartment and this is the first time she started to do this. Is it possible for her to get an allergy from the food that she has been eating for a while now?
Avatar f tn Cats can have a lot of dirt in their ears (dust sticking to their ear wax) without it being mites, but you want to know if mites are there because they can literally chew the tissue.
Avatar f tn ) they are indoor cats, they are all fixed. and they do go to a vet but i cant take them unless its something thats really bad for if there in pain or a strick emergency, yes ear mites are bad but its not the worse thing, ok i am here to ask if there is a good low prised earmite med, that i can get to get rid of my kitties fleas, i have 5 cats and buying the advantage or frontliner is too much money for i do not have it, foster and smiths earmitiside is this a good med.
Avatar m tn I have 4 cats and 2 days ago I noticed my cats scratching their ears often..so i decided i'd check them and i noticed they had ear mites...so i went ahead and put 2 drops of mineral oil in each of their ears (because I heard that it helped kill ear mites) however..after doing so i did a little more research and read up that mineral oil is bad for cats..especially if they inhale it...and what worries me is i noticed all 4 of my cats cleaning their ears with their paws and licking it...
634218 tn?1228151139 yes i took the cats to the vets & he didnt see any fleas, they scratch all over. But the other day a stray cat tried to get in my home & i stroked it so maybe thats where the came from! Thankyou.
Avatar n tn I have always had horrible dandruff(psoriasis) only on my scalp so its hard to tell what is dandruff or if there really could be lice or some other kind of mites crawling up there. How do I tell the difference between scabies, lice, bedbugs, tiny white worms, and dandruff flakes?
Avatar f tn Seeing as this condition is happening in both cats, I would wonder more about an environmental problem (like fleas or ear mites) than allergies. Is the veterinary diet you mentioned a hypoallergenic diet? Are these cats related? You might jump over to the Ask the Expert forums and find the Skin Problems in pets forum. We have a veterinary dermatologist there who can help with these type of issues.
548408 tn?1214692039 the bunny could have mange an infestation of fur mites, which can cause a rabbit's skin to become itchy, with white particles like dandruff appearing in its fur. In some cases, the rabbit will lose its fur in areas of heavy infestation. Also called walking dandruff.
Avatar f tn Scabies cause extreme itching and can be transmitted. Demodex mites are not contagious, usually. Both mites can be normal inhabitants of the skin in very low numbers. They don't cause problems unless they are in very high numbers. In high numbers these mites can set your dog up for secondary skin infections such as pyoderma (yeast or bacterial skin infections) and hair loss. Once they appear in high numbers and definitive diagnosis is made they require treatment.
Avatar f tn It's advantage multi, he was thinking maybe it was walking dandruff but I went back to the vets again yesterday and we did a skin scraping and it's not mites or walking dandruff. Advantage multi kill many mites so were playing safe. We now have moved on thinking its a fungal infection, it's only making one pup really lose hair the other two have the itch but aren't losing near as much hair.
Avatar f tn t see any gunk but he scratches them and they are often red and hot. One of my cats had mites which he was treated for but he had dark brown gunk in his ears and there were not anyblack spots under the skin. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn Also for me, the dust mites bother my asthma 10 times worse than the cat dander (have 2 cats) even though my skin ***** reaction was higher on cats than dust mites.
Avatar m tn t really pin point what is going on. I have read about bird mites, rat mites, cat mites, and dog mites and nothing really seems to match exactly what i am experiencing. Although, the cat mites come very close-but so does the rat mites. The reason i researched all of that is because the owner of the house (who doesn't live here) has 15 cats, and used their house vaccum in my room before i moved. 15 cats living in one house is a breeding ground for diseases!
