6570539 tn?1382536460 Can you remember your dog shaking his head alot before the hair loss started on the rest of his body? Mites can often start in the ear (because of all the places dogs tend to put their heads), but the mites could also have been transferred from another dog or from the bedding of another dog with the infestation.
Avatar f tn It's advantage multi, he was thinking maybe it was walking dandruff but I went back to the vets again yesterday and we did a skin scraping and it's not mites or walking dandruff. Advantage multi kill many mites so were playing safe. We now have moved on thinking its a fungal infection, it's only making one pup really lose hair the other two have the itch but aren't losing near as much hair.
Avatar n tn Also could be small mites in your dog or cat if you have those. Bird mites have to be treated with a bug bomb and the bird or rodent nest removed. Pet mites(or walking dandruff) look like tiny white dandruff that moves. This is treated with a strong flea/mite shampoo weekly for 4 weeks plus the carpet/upholstery must be treated with a flea carpet spray weekly for 4 weeks.

Avatar n tn t seem to have made much of a dent in the dandruff. Like I said, the dandruff is minimal on some days and heavier on other days with seemingly no rhyme or reason. I've tried adding some olive oil to his food, and even rubbing some on him because I read it might help, but really when I massaged some olive oil into his skin it almost seemed to make the dandruff worse. What do you all think? I have read they sell dog balm and dog moisturizers, which I'd never even heard of before.
Avatar f tn It could also be a fungal infection, which is more common in dogs with floppy ears. The ear fold keeps in more moisture than in pointed-eared dogs. It would be a good idea to have your vet take a look so you're not blindly throwing things at the problem that may not work, or may make the situation worse. It's also a good idea to occasionally check for, and remove, any ear wax that is visible. We swab ears with a Q-tip about once a month.

Avatar m tn My 7 yr old female cat has developed what appears to be dandruff thick skin flakes that slough off. Is this a cat's allergy or a dietary problem?
1380814 tn?1285965586 This topical parasiticide is effective in treating a number of different parasitic infestations in dogs and cats. For dogs with scabies, the treatment is applied topically, then repeated 2-4 weeks later. All dogs that have come into contact with an affected animal need to be treated as well. A veterinarian should be consulted about the most appropriate treatment plan. People with suspicious lesions should consult a medical dermatologist for evaluation and treatment.
Avatar m tn I have a 3 year old Dachshund/Tibetan Terrier mix. She was fine until she became a years. She started to scratch & we discovered it was fleas so we got rid of that problem and to date, no flees. Then about 2 month after she started to get some large yellow flakes on her skin & in her ear while at the same time loosing hair. My vet told me that she had mites and we need to increase the dose of worm medicine from one to two tablets (i.e Endolav 200mg).

Avatar f tn t worry because it will not harm the ear and it may even help by suffocating any mites in there if the problem is ear mites. Then, first thing Monday morning, call the vet and get the first appointment they have available.
Avatar n tn I have always had horrible dandruff(psoriasis) only on my scalp so its hard to tell what is dandruff or if there really could be lice or some other kind of mites crawling up there. How do I tell the difference between scabies, lice, bedbugs, tiny white worms, and dandruff flakes?
Avatar f tn Scabies cause extreme itching and can be transmitted. Demodex mites are not contagious, usually. Both mites can be normal inhabitants of the skin in very low numbers. They don't cause problems unless they are in very high numbers. In high numbers these mites can set your dog up for secondary skin infections such as pyoderma (yeast or bacterial skin infections) and hair loss. Once they appear in high numbers and definitive diagnosis is made they require treatment.
Avatar n tn Could be dry skin or mites, like ear mites in your dogs ears. Cats get these mites too. Check the dogs ears and if not, maybe could be simple case of dry skin or possible allergy. Check with your vet of course.
Avatar m tn He will either offer you the medicated shampoo for lice, or make another suggestion. You might have him wash his beard with Listerine; my mother-in-law did that for dry scalp and dandruff and it is a refreshing rinse that will not hurt him. If neither of these work, consult a physician or dermatologist; he could have a skin condition and need to shave to be able to treat it adequately. Consult a professional if it continues.
209987 tn?1451935465 The last time she was here ( last Christmas after dad passed ) I had taken her in because of this...they said it was mites. They never even did a swab! I've had many cats in the past and they ALWAYS did a swab to check for mites. They put the mite drops in her ears and told me to continue doing this for X number of days. It did nothing but make her more irritable, and the shaking was so violent that I thought she would snap her neck.
548408 tn?1214692039 the bunny could have mange an infestation of fur mites, which can cause a rabbit's skin to become itchy, with white particles like dandruff appearing in its fur. In some cases, the rabbit will lose its fur in areas of heavy infestation. Also called walking dandruff.
Avatar m tn So, the thing about fleas and mites and lice is that they tend to be VERY species specific. Not to say one of these creatures can't jump from a animal and onto a person and bite them, but they will not live on a human. Cats and dogs really don't get mites aside from ear mites..
Avatar m tn Revolution is primarily a treatment for fleas in cats and dogs but it is approved for ear mites in both.
Avatar f tn It is important to treat all dogs in the household, since some dogs can be asymptomatic carriers of the mites and then can re-infest the shepherd. If the itching persists despite scabies treatment on all dogs, then I suspect there may be something else going on--demodex mites are more difficult to treat than scabies, but still are usually very treatable using oral ivermectin given daily for 3-6 months.
Avatar f tn it certainly sounds like ear mites as ear infections of that severity occur less in cats then in dogs. It should be very easy for your vet to diagnose ear mites. a little mineral oil in the ear (to trap the mites) and then examining a swab under the microscope is all that is needed. you will be able to see the mites swimming around and then the correct medication can be prescribed.
Avatar m tn Mange can spread to human but mites dies in a couple of weeks. But am scared that i spread human scabies to my dog. I always hug my dog after coming home from work and he sleep on my bed.
Avatar n tn Some types of dog mites can be transmitted to humans. If present in your dogs, have them seen by veterinarian for treatment. In your case, cold packs and antihistamine medication may help with the itching especially when taken at night. Try to avoid scratching to prevent secondary infection. If it persists, have this evaluated by your doctor for proper management. Take care and keep us posted.
