and the vet will probably prescribe cyclosporine drops to help the eye produce more tears. Before you use the cyclosporine drops, be aware that they will sting your dogs eyes, and long term use may contribute to kidney disease...talk this over with your vet.
Since your dog is 12 years old, please have annual bloodwork done on him to assess liver and kidney functions...bloodwork should be done on all senior dogs.

We immediately put her on an antibiotic ointment and cyclosporine. It has been almost 10 days and while there is less discharge, she is still having some trouble opening her eye, she just keeps it closed (unless she gets excited). At some times you look at her and she looks completely fine, others times she can barely open her eye. Is this normal for KCS? Should we have seen some major improvement by now?
Hi and Welcome ... I am not sure at all but wanted to stop by to welcome you. My dog (yes, I am serious) takes that med for her autoimmune eye disorder, but I'm not sure of its properties, etc. for hives.
(interestingly though, a few days before at the vet, the schirmer test was 12 in both eyes). Now 6 weeks later, the right eye has a 6 and the left eye still has 0. The specialist reviewed all of the options with us - cyclosporine, pilocarpine or tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said that very rarely has she seen any dog respond to cyclosporine after not responding to tacrolimus.

Thank you very much once again Doctor.Up until now I haven't even really needed artificial tears but I know I will need that and more so I tried to find out about Restasis which is cyclosporine 0.05% suspension ( eye drops) but it seems it hasn't been approved in Europe. Cyclosporine is only available for oral intake for other purposes...
t dry eye, it was irritated eye. The US vet made some calls and ordered a new ointment (EDTA - not sure what it stands for) but it's to break up the crystals in her eye. I've had her on that for about 5 days and it seems to be helping. To get rid of the haze, he has me give her another ointment (short form is NPD) every 2 hours for this week. We'll go back Monday to see how it did.
The only eye ointment I am familiar with is called Ottomune (or something close to that - I can look it up, but haven't). It is for "dry eye" which can lead to loss of eye sight. I use it twice a day, every day.
The symptom that led to the dry eye diagnosis was the production of an eye "film" I'll call it, not sure it might also be called "weepy".
05%, I was wondering if it is okay to put the eye drops in my eye, and then after like 10 minutes or more use a warm eye compress, I am very stressed due to my bloodshot eyes from dry eye, and I find that the warm compress helps me to fall asleep but do not want to "wash" away or eliminate the effects of the eye drops with the moisture from the warm compress. any thoughts will be appreciated !
I have been taking Restasis regularly for 2 months now for dry eye treatment. I usually put two drops in my eye at a time instead of just 1. It says it has "Cyclosporine Opthalmic Emulsion .05%. I have taken two Oraquick home tests and they both came up negative for hiv. Would the Cyclosporine be able to cause a false negative?

About 6 months ago, I was finally diagnosed and started taking cyclosporine 100 mg 2x day. After a week, I could eat like a normal person—just about anything I wanted. It was great, it even allowed me to travel to Europe. The cyclosporine I was taking was a powder in a capsule, apparently this has been taken off the market and instead I took the same medication, but it was in the form of a capsule with alcohol. Unfortunately, after a short time, I was right back to before treatment.

So it all started when I was 13 years old (I'm 23 now) when I was diagnosed with (bacterial) conjunctivitis, for which I was prescribed only a number of various antibiotic eye drops, and at other times an antibiotic ointment. I've been struggling with it since then. However, for the first 7 years, it'd only start in spring and end by winter time, which made it kind of bearable. But in the last 3 years, it's become completely chronic and all year round!!
Newer two topical eczema drugs like pimecrolimus (Elidel Cream) and tacrolimus (Protopic Ointment) are reserved only for cases where corticosteroids have not been effective.
Sometimes oral corticosteroids and immunosuppressants like cyclosporine and phototherapy are used for resistant cases. Your doctor may prescribe some sedative-antihistaminics to reduce itching. You may discuss about these treatment options with your doctor.
I am still on 100 mg 2x daily cyclosporine. My cyclosporine through levels have been lower, the last time they were at 79. I Have been on 300 mg ursodiol 3x daily for biliary stricture since tx. I lowered the dose to 300mg once daily but just recently raised it back to 300x 3 daily because right side discomfort an increase in bilirubin. My headaches and fluid in ears have gotten better, still have the vision issues but heart palpitations have also lessened.
On the third day, I applied ointment myself. I realized my right eye started to become pink eye. On the fourth day when I woke up, my left eye totally couldn't open and then able to open after a while. After I closed my left eye for a long time, my left eyelid was stick together and it dropped tears after I opened my left eye. Later I found out my left eye felt pain when seeing light.
