Avatar m tn But, while you are there, have him tested for Dry Eye. (my yorkie had dry eye..my vet said it is quite common in older dogs and smaller breeds seem more suseptible to it ) Mucus buildup / discharge from the eyes is the main symptom...also squinting of the eyes, (especially outside from sun and wind ) The test is very simple, painless,inexpensive...(paper strip), and takes about 60 seconds. Dry Eye can be very painful and can lead to eye ulcers and blindness.
Avatar f tn Dry eye in dogs is treated with a drug called cyclosporine, which can only be obtained with a prescription from your vet. Please take her back to her former vet or find a new vet to prescribe this medicine for her. Her vision is in jeopardy without it.
1627010 tn?1299446388 You can check and see if your vet has any Cyclosporine or if he can write you a script for it.It makes the eye produce more tears.I use it for my peke and he has been on it for years .It is really a good med.and since your baby is use to getting meds in her eyes i am sure she will be fine with it.You can also have it compounded into drops if drops are better then the ointment.I use the compounded drops it seems to last longer than the other.I put 2 drops in twice a day.
Avatar m tn I know that you said that your dog has been on cyclosporine in the past for the treatment of KCS, however has she ever used a product called 'Optimmune"? It's a preparation that contains cyclosporine but it's different from the cyclosporine drops. When eyedrop preparations to treat KCS are made up, they have stabilizers put in so that they don't lose their potency too quickly before the whole preparation can be used.
Avatar f tn We immediately put her on an antibiotic ointment and cyclosporine. It has been almost 10 days and while there is less discharge, she is still having some trouble opening her eye, she just keeps it closed (unless she gets excited). At some times you look at her and she looks completely fine, others times she can barely open her eye. Is this normal for KCS? Should we have seen some major improvement by now?
Avatar n tn How iron clad is the expiration date for cyclosporine eye drops for dogs?
12270954 tn?1424407445 I don’t know if his eye will heal and be normal or if I’ll have to give him eye drops for the rest of his life, much less, which eye drops do I give him?! (tear production drops, artificial tears, Tacrolimus, Genteal, I-Drops, Collidad Silver) I don’t know if the Cyclosporine will help produce tears or if it will give him cancer. I don’t know if he will go blind or they will want to take his eye out! I know one thing for sure, the saliva duct surgery sounds awful! Sorry for going on and on.
Avatar m tn Have you tried Optimmune? It contains cyclosporine, but it is an ointment, and far superior to liquid drop formulations that also contain cyclosporine. I have seen animals that have loads of hyperpigmentation in the eye and almost total opacity become almost normal looking eyeballs after a couple of months of Optimmune use. If you did try it, how long did you use it for?
Avatar n tn First of all, you want to stay away from products like Artificial Tears and other over-the-counter eye lubricants, because these products contain a form of soap as a stabilizer, and while they are fine for occasional use in normal eyes that just happen to be in a temporarily drying condition, for the lifelong treatment that will be needed for dry eye, the soap stabilizer will be too irritating. There are special preparations that contain cyclosporine that are used to treat KCS.
Avatar m tn on his eyes and if I see any clouding I go back to twice a day. By itself not a big expense for dry eye, just another of a list of special treatments the dog needs. I think he is typical Westie.
1006035 tn?1485575897 I brought him to the vet and they said it was definitely pink eye and gave him some eye ointment. I find it so odd to put ointment in an eye...he doesn't seem to care though. Do you think he'll have allergies like this every year? He is a 2 year old labradoodle.
Avatar m tn I would not advise trying the angel eye product recommended above...just saying...itsounds like your dog probably has dry eye (keratoconjuctivitis sicca). The solution is not to reduce tears further. It is true this is the only treatment, but I do not know if an ointment is available...be careful with advice on here..
Avatar f tn Hi and Welcome ... I am not sure at all but wanted to stop by to welcome you. My dog (yes, I am serious) takes that med for her autoimmune eye disorder, but I'm not sure of its properties, etc. for hives.
Avatar f tn Can tacrolimus eye drops and Cyclosporine ointment cause cancer in dogs? My precious dog, baby and best friend was diagnosed just last week with Transitional Cell Carcinoma in his bladder. It is a rapid growing cancer. I am completely heartbroken and am wondering if there was something I could've done to prevent this. He has been on these two eye medications for about a year. His name is Duke and he is a beautiful tri-colored collie and is a little over 10 years old.
Avatar m tn (interestingly though, a few days before at the vet, the schirmer test was 12 in both eyes). Now 6 weeks later, the right eye has a 6 and the left eye still has 0. The specialist reviewed all of the options with us - cyclosporine, pilocarpine or tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said that very rarely has she seen any dog respond to cyclosporine after not responding to tacrolimus.
Avatar f tn t know how he could work on an eye with a local, not to mention how stressful that would be for the dog! Ask how long the procedure would take. If relatively short, then possibly a lighter anesthetic can be given.
Avatar f tn Doctor John, thank you for explaining to me what each of my medicines is for. No, I do not wear contacts, but I do wear my glasses when I need them. My eyes are better now that I'm still on my prescribed medicines.. but unfortunately, they start to itch badly (especially the corners and sometimes the tear ducts) if I delay taking them just an hour or something lol.
Avatar f tn Below is one of the medical record of a patient, seek help from ophthalmologist,to see if there is any improvement for the treatment regimen. Thank you very much!!! Admission condition: "Found that elevated blood sugar for more than five years, right eye pain for three months". Physical examination on admission showed the following: general condition, VOD:0.5 (correction). Fundus examination of optic nerve papilla edema, conjunctival hyperemia edema slightly.
Avatar f tn t been approved in Europe. Cyclosporine is only available for oral intake for other purposes...I came across a message of a lady who said it was easier to get cyclosporine drops if you borrowed a dog with dry eyes and took him to the vet lol.I don't really like the idea of buying off the internet but I'll look into it.My eyes are clearing up and though I'm still stuck at home with fever and sore throat, I'm getting better.Root for me, I really want to use my contacts again!
Avatar f tn He came home with OptiVet drops, antibiotic eye ointment, atropine ophthalmic ointment, and Rimadyl. He has not had the atropine ointment in about 48 hours and his pupil is still very dilated. Is this normal?
Avatar n tn Then you might need some antiseptic ointment from the vet. You could bathe his feet with saline solution. For wounds with my dog, I use Echinacea herbal tincture, let down with a little water as a safe antiseptic, to prevent or treat any infection. That works very well.
Avatar m tn Jewel went under surgery and was completely lethargic for days after. The eye vet said it was systemic and not the eyes (although she had just had surgery) so I took her to the ER clinic who said she was dehydrated. Four days post surgery she still is not eating, lethargic and now is acting completely blind. I take her back to the Eye vet who tells me her eye is functioning just like before (so I guess it is all in my mind or my dogs).
574219 tn?1217352418 Hi, I just want to say that my 9 year old shih-tzu Maggie has had some form of Conjunctivitis/dry eye for the past 5 months. I have taken her to the vet 3 times - tried 2 different vets and lastly a pet opthamologist. This was her 4th doctor visit for the same problem. I've been prescribed eye drops, ointment and antibiotics by the different doctors.
495284 tn?1333894042 Hi everyone! I'm Liberty's mom and Dominosarah is my mom! Liberty seems to be doing pretty good. She is squinting a bit but I suppose I would to if I had to have ointment in my eye. She tolerates me applying it to her eye but when I have to "rub" it in, she tries to squirm a bit. Makes me feel good that she trusts me enough to apply the ointment beings I have only had her for about 9 months. I must be doing something right!
Avatar f tn The only eye ointment I am familiar with is called Ottomune (or something close to that - I can look it up, but haven't). It is for "dry eye" which can lead to loss of eye sight. I use it twice a day, every day. The symptom that led to the dry eye diagnosis was the production of an eye "film" I'll call it, not sure it might also be called "weepy".
