Antihistamine h1 blockers

Common Questions and Answers about Antihistamine h1 blockers

antihistamine

Avatar f tn I know they say that this antihistamine med used as a sleep aid (sold as Unisom) does not have addictive properties, but I am confused. I have been taking this version of Unisom nightly for over 6 years. Some nights, I took 1 and a half or 2. The last year, I have been having increasingly awful Restless Leg Syndrome and researching it one maddening night, I found that nighttime antihistamines can cause or aggravate RLS.
Avatar f tn If you know that you can safely take the OTC meds benadryl as well as either zantac or tagamet, you might try that just to see if it helps. This would be combining an h1 antihistamine (benadryl) with an h2 antihistamine (either of the two "stomach" meds I listed), and is sort of a one-two punch for certain types of allergic responses.
975357 tn?1252704723 I made an appointment with an allergist a couple weeks ago, at the time the receptionist told me to stop all antihistamines 1 week prior to visit. I stopped all my h1 blockers (zyrtec, benadryl etc.) but I stupidly continued to take my pepcid (famotidine) and forgot that this is also in the class of antihistamines known as h2 blockers (includes tagamet, pepcid, zantac etc.
Avatar f tn Hi, Hives are red, itchy welts or swellings on the skin that often come in clusters. In doctor speak, hives are known as "urticaria". Hives can appear anywhere on the body, cropping up either in one small area or covering large patches of skin. They most often occur as part of an allergic reaction. Hives usually appear suddenly and go away on their own in a matter of days, hours, or even minutes. Chronic hives, however, can last for six weeks or more.
Avatar f tn The only medication that works like a miracle for me is Doxepin so that is why I thought maybe this was related to anxiety or the fact that Doxepin is an H1 and H2 antagonist. However doxepin has caused me to gain about 15lbs and I want to get pregnant in the near future so I am not sure what to do and doctors aren't much help. Does Wellbutrin work in a similar way to doxepin? Do you think that would work for my hives?
338416 tn?1420045702 Chances are that the antihistamine was a histamine H1-receptor antagonist. Many protein based allergens (bee/wasp stings, etc.) seem to trigger histamine H2 responses. Since Copaxone is a copolymer, histamine H1-receptor antagonist may not work well. The histamine H2-receptor antagonists, like cimetidine (Tagamet) or ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid) might actually work better. I know, it sounds goofy, but the histamine response causes the acid pumps in the stomach to turn on.
Avatar n tn Elevagted histamine in urine 3x normal amount. Starting antihistamines and H1 and H2 blockers. Possible Mast cell activation disorder? Why woulod immune response continue and I keep feeling worse, aftger Cipro and Diflucan and Nuva ring were discontinued? How is this treated???? I am so exhuasted I cannot function. ALl bloods normal except histamine in urine and malabsorption, ie, Vit B-12, D, anemia. Is IViG indicated?
20315163 tn?1494892428 I thought it was allergies so I started taking antihistamine. I tried every H1/H2 antihistamine but this didnt help. I took guanfacine for my runny nose but that barely did anything. I went to see a primary doctor and he prescribed a nasal spray that would stop the nose from running and an antibiotic. None of which helped at all. I also tried different eye drops for allergies, redness, crusting and they did not help either.
Avatar n tn Many doctors do require their patients to go off H2 blockers (a specific type of antihistamine. H2 blockers inclue Zantac (ranitidine) and Pepcid. I cannot recall the chemical in Pepcid at the moment. Another questionable med is Elavil (amitriptyline). It is an antidepressant but has some antihistamine qualities. Every doctor is different on these meds. Many don't want to cause issues with going off of these meds.
714398 tn?1229666191 Benadryl, or Diphenhydramine, is an antihistamine drug which is an H1 receptor antagonist. In people who are epileptic or otherwise prone to seizures, this drug usually causes a seizure because its mechanism of action reduces the seizure threshold. Alot of people just have one seizure and never have another, in your case it appears to have been provoked by the drug. I would consult a neurologist.
Avatar f tn My boyfriend of nearly two years has antibodies for both H1 and H2. To his knowledge he has never had a genital outbreak but he does get cold sores. Up until a few weeks ago, I had neither H1 nor H2 but a few weeks ago, much to my horror and after a very painful initial outbreak in my vagina, I was diagnosed with genital H1. The diagnostic tool was a culture taken from the active sore.
Avatar m tn It came back neg for H2 and said Indeterminate for h1, That I had an atypical reaction that may or may not have been due to HSV. Said I need to wait 4 more months and take another wb to pair against this wb I just took to see if I have it. This is getting really old. I have had a pos swab for h1, 2 neg igg's for h1 that also said I was pos for h2 4 months apart and a wb that said I was neg for h2 and might have h1. This is not fair.

7205189 tn?1447794738 Do you know what kind of meds they were...a PPI or HII? There are meds for reflux that are histamine blockers...H2 blockers...or HII's...PPI's are Proton pump inhibitors and they did not work for me....but the histamine blockers do...I take them along with the antihistamines b4 bed....when I have excess I take a non drowsy antihistamine during the day. Good luck with the Dr...
Avatar n tn How long can i use antihistamine for my daughter aged 7 months to relieve her of the eczema itching.
666921 tn?1254990618 I personally don't take antihistamine but just some advice I read that - antihistamine suppresses the immune system - never thought about it before - they work like steroids - some very good advice on another forum was - do not take antihistamine if you have lyme I am sure some of you already knew this but just thought I would mention it
Avatar m tn In the mornings I take nonsedating meds Claritin (works on H1) and Zantac (works on H2)...evening I take sedating meds Zrytec (H1). My GI and Derm doctor have been coordinating my care and gave me the following explaination: I have the following underlying health conditions (hayfever, acid reflux/heartburn, urticaria(chronic hives, and Chron's disease) which are all caused by an overactive autoimmune system.
612876 tn?1355514495 Have you tried a second generation H1 antihistamine like Zyrtec or Claritin in lieu of Benadryl (which is a first generation H1 antihistamine)? The second-gens are more selective toward the peripheral nervous system, and with less central nervous system activity (this is what makes them be able to claim less "drowsiness" side effects than the first gens like Benadryl), they're supposed to be safer for people with dysautonomia.
Avatar f tn You are right. Hismanal (astemazole) an H1 histamine receptor blocker was taken off the market because of the occurrence of a number of abnormal heart rhythms, some potentially fatal. Sudafed is still available in the U.S. but not OTC. It is extremely unlikely that the double dosed medication you took would have caused any permanent damage to your heart or any other organ. Therefore the murmur is unrelated to Hismanal or Sudafed.
Avatar n tn d with pots by Mayo Clinic but have improved significantly since beginning a trial of H1 and H1 histamine blockers for suspected mast cell issuess (NOT mastocytosis). The Mayo Clinic said they couldn't detect any mast cell problems but Dr. Akin and Dr. Castels are reporting that trad'l testes (tryptase levels etc.) may not always identify the problem in some people. I think i may be one of those people as getting the Mast cells under control seems to be helping the pots!
Avatar n tn Some of you might want to try taking an H1 and H2 histamine blocker an hour before eating and see if that does any good. Benadryl is an example of an H1 and Pepcid is an H2, both available over the counter. Benadryl will knock you out if you aren't used to taking it. Zyrtec might be a better choice for an H1. It is now OTC. Doing that has allowed me to eat although I also have to take more meds after eating or I will just get a delayed response.
Avatar f tn ve taken benadryl (or for that matter, promethazine or some other 1st generation H1 antihistamine) since the dysautonomia started and had no problems, you're probably in the clear (but may want to double-check with your doc); otherwise, be cautious about those and always ask the doctor if it's okay for you to take. A good alternative for nausea medication is Zofran (generic: ondansetron) but it's expensive so may not be a great option if insurance won't cover it.
231441 tn?1333892766 Hydroxyzine (pronounced /haɪˈdrɒksɨziːn/) is a first-generation antihistamine, of the piperazine class that is an H1 receptor antagonist. It was synthesised in the early 1950s and the medicinal formulation of this drug was announced in the 04 August 1956 issue of Chemistry Week.
