Topical lotions such as calamine decreases pain and pruritus. Topical anesthetic and antihistamine preparations should be avoided as they can sensitize the skin following sun exposure and induce allergic contact sensitivity. Hence, Systemic antihistamines (injection is preferred) and antipruritics such as hydroxyzine or cetirizine against prescription may be helpful.
Even addition of corticosteroids has possible benefits.
you could try an antihistamine such as 4mg piriton. This is used for such things as hayfever and is excellent for itching too. It can cause drowsiness until you get adapted to them, some people such as myself feel no effects. I know it's common for lots of itching around the chest area after bypass surgery because the nerves knit together sending out signals. I've not heard of it being all over the body and I wonder if she is having a slight allergic reaction to some medication.
I went to see a general surgeon 2 weeks ago because I was having rectal pain, discomfort and itching again. He told me I have pruritus ani. About 4 months ago I developed a strange itchy feeling all over my body. It started shortly after a risky encounter. I woke up in the middle of the night extremely itchy over my entire body. After about a day the itch went away but seemed to be localized in the scrotum area.

Hi, my dermatologist has prescribed me a antihistamine for my itching and wants me to use it for 4-6 weeks. The med is called hydroxzine. I am concerned because i never heard of anyone using antihistamine for that long. Will this severly affect my liver? Please help!
Does this mean that something has gone wrong with treatment? Is something happening to my liver?
I would doubt that anything is "wrong". Manifestations of pruritus seem to come and go for no known reason. Whether is is associated with HCV and treatment or cirrhosis.
I am not sure how disruptive it is for you, (some cirrhotics scratch with knifes (!) and permanently scar themselves) but there are a number of things you can do to treat the itching.
I believe that I have brachioradial pruritus. I have episodes of itchy arms where I can not stop scratching. The over the counter creams I have tried are useless. Ice does help so I think it is brachioradial pruritus. This is my question-- Sometimes I also feel this itching (not nearly as severe) on my face-- especially after I wash my face. I've changed soaps, used different cleansing products and different moisturizers. Still, sometimes, my face feels itchy.
