Avatar m tn This is pruritus ani. For the itch take an antihistamine to break the itch/scratch cycle. On the anus itself used a mild steroid cream like Hydrocortisone 0.5% When showering be very sparing with your use of soap down there. Congratulations on getting fit and losing weight.

Avatar f tn Anti-itch drugs, often antihistamine, may reduce the itch during a flare up of eczema, and the reduced scratching in turn reduces damage and irritation to the skin. For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid may be used (e.g. hydrocortisone or desonide), whilst more severe cases require a higher-potency steroid (e.g. clobetasol propionate, fluocinonide). Eczema can be exacerbated by dryness of the skin. Moisturizing is one of the most important self-care treatments for sufferers of eczema.
Avatar f tn Histamine- Some individuals with pruritus have higher than normal histamine levels. In recent clinical trials, antihistamines have not been found effective in treating the itching. Serotonin- Serotonin may alter itch perception, which may be why selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been found to help manage pruritus in some people. Bile Salts- Those with liver disease may have higher levels of bile salt building up under the skin, which may cause itching.
Avatar n tn Topical lotions such as calamine decreases pain and pruritus. Topical anesthetic and antihistamine preparations should be avoided as they can sensitize the skin following sun exposure and induce allergic contact sensitivity. Hence, Systemic antihistamines (injection is preferred) and antipruritics such as hydroxyzine or cetirizine against prescription may be helpful. Even addition of corticosteroids has possible benefits.
Avatar f tn ) and permanently scar themselves) but there are a number of things you can do to treat the itching. Make sure if you plan on taking any drugs for pruritus, that you notify your treating doctor before starting and any new drug. NOTE: A number of these drugs are to various degrees toxic to the liver!!!
Avatar f tn you could try an antihistamine such as 4mg piriton. This is used for such things as hayfever and is excellent for itching too. It can cause drowsiness until you get adapted to them, some people such as myself feel no effects. I know it's common for lots of itching around the chest area after bypass surgery because the nerves knit together sending out signals. I've not heard of it being all over the body and I wonder if she is having a slight allergic reaction to some medication.
Avatar m tn I went to see a general surgeon 2 weeks ago because I was having rectal pain, discomfort and itching again. He told me I have pruritus ani. I was wondering if i shouldask to have an anoscopy done when I return to see him for a follow-up in two weeks? I would rather have an anoscopy done before him telling me to have a colonoscopy done. Thanks! .
Avatar n tn Hi, Itching of the arms could be due to atopic dermatitis, xerosis or dry skin and brachioradial pruritus. The latter involves itching on the upper arms, neck and shoulder blades related to sun exposure and nerve damage of the upper spine. Atopic dermatitis is also a very common cause of itching behind the knees. Pruritic rashes of the knees and elbows is commonly caused by psoriasis and dermatitis herpetiformis. Antihistamine may provide relief of the pruritus.
Avatar n tn Direct clinical examination and complete medical history are important in reaching a diagnosis. Over-the-counter antihistamine may also help with the itching, especially if taken at night. Take care and do keep us posted.
612551 tn?1450022175 I had prior to the vet visit above been given Wilson one half Benedryl 25 mg Antihistamine morning and evening, in the hope it would clear up the paw problem. A couple weeks of this did not produce any improvement. I then checked and saw recommendations to use 1 - 2 mg per pound. As Wilson is j20+ pounds my does level was low. I have decided to continue giving him Benadryl but now one 25 mg capsule morning and night. Hope it keeps his paws and general itch problems under control.
Avatar f tn Truthfully, I do not what drugs I can take since I can have either no reaction, hives or swelling. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Any suggestions on how to deal with my allergies? I have many allergies but things have been fairly bearable until pollen season. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Cold packs, anti-itch creams and lotion, or over-the-counter antihistamine medications may help provide relief. Pruritus or itchy skin may be due to dry skin, irritation, or infection. Moisturizing regularly may also help. If it persists, have this evaluated further by your doctor for proper management and to rule out other medical conditions such as diabetes, infection or hormone problems. A complete medical history and physical examination will help with the diagnosis.

Avatar n tn HI, HOw are you? Are there other symptoms present? Aside from dry skin due to cold weather, pruritus without the presence of rash can be due to certain medications, underlying conditions (diabetes mellitus, liver disease, kidney failure, jaundice, thyroid disorders and even blood disorders), parasitic diseases, irritation from soap, detergents, and clothing. The presence of hemorrhoids, anal fissure, or persistent diarrhea may also lead to itching around the anus.
Avatar m tn Cholestyramine (Questran) and Colestipol (Colestid) are commonly prescribed to help manage pruritus. These drugs are bile acid binders that attach to bile acids in the blood and help eliminate them from the body. Since the cholestyramine doseage you are taking is no longer effective you should notify your provider/hepatologist of this change in your symptoms and have them find something that does work.
