Has anyone taken this for constipation? I was on 8 mcg twice a day fir about 2 weeks with no improvement. Dose was raised to 24 mcg twice a day and absolutely no improvement. I may have a small BM if I take a dose of Miralax. I am now having some side effects on the higher dose, some chest and throat tightness, worse bloating, more discomfort. Reported this to the doctor (specialist at a university clinic) abpndcwas told to get an EKG done but stay on the med and give it time to work.

Hello All. I'm really new on the panel and I'm searching for help. In the last two weeks I have not been able to have a BM. My doctor gave me some samples of amitiza 24 mcg. I've been taken them 2 per day for the last 4 days - One at night and another in the A.M. With the 1st tablet I had a BM. I have not had another BM since. It doesn't seem that I'm having any normal digestive sounds or movements. I don't even have the urge to have a BM.

Then my GI doc showed me the discoloration that the laxative did to my colon, this was I believe caused by the laxatives blocking necessary elements in my diet to keep a colon healthy! I did try Amitiza, it does work for me, 8 mcg twice daily. I went off of it due to the cost, and ended up in the hospital.... NOT fun. I am back on Amitiza now, and hoping to be back to normal soon.

They had me on Amitiza 24 MCG capsules and polyethelene gylcol powder. I took the pills and the powder twice a day. I also ate fiber one cereals and bars. I have always ate alot of fruits and vegetables.

My daughter began amitiza and it has worked wonderfully, however, she is spotting in between periods. Is this common?

My doctor just started me on Amitiza last week following a colonoscopy that was fine. I also have had 2 CT scans; one without contrast and the other with contIrast and nothing showed up there. I had and still have a pain in my right lower abdomen. This AM the nausea was so bad I called the GI group and was told to stop taking the Amitiza for a few weeks and that the most common side effect of the drug is extreme nausea and it should ALWAYS be taken on a full stomach.

Have you tried taking magnesium citrate every morning? Have you tried Amitiza? I have not tried Linzess yet, but Amitiza is pretty good for me. You could try taking walnut hull and wormwood preparation for parasites to see if that helps you.

Also take Lactulose and Amitiza. However, in order to take the Amitiza must take a nausea pill before and after. Often times still have nausea with the Amitiza and not convinced it helps all that much. I've been at this for 8 yrs and have done everything but stand on my head. Without pills and powder - bowel movements are difficult and every 3-5 days. And only partial. EXTREMELY bloated. Have difficulty fitting into street clothes later in the day. Makes work life and social life difficult.

I did and its been a month and it still hasnt healed. Having trouble with constipation and I am on amitiza. Any advice is welcome. As well, my doctor told me to take a stool softner twice a day to. Thinking about starting to eat soup.

I went to a gastroenterologist the next day and she thought it was IBS and prescribed me Amitiza and Bentyl. I have been on the Amitiza and it makes me have frequent watery BMs...and the Bentyl does not do much. The pain is constant and I feel like I'm pregnant I'm so bloated (I'm not!) could this really just be IBS? Could the pain be reproductive (i.e. ovarian cysts) I'm going to school for nursing and it is really interfering with my education...

Hi Candy, I really don't know how common it is but I also have IBS that just keeps getting worse... I only have bowel movements once maybe twice a month... I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth.. Also, I used to never have bloating and pain in between those movements... But, in the last few months my stomach stays distended, I cramp until I double over, and nothing seems to help... My doctor said it's a combination of the MS and the medication...

I had an endoscopy and found out I have a large duodenal ulcer with partial outlet obscrtuction.Can I take Amitiza with this ulcer?I was supposed to have a colonoscopy but I couldn't get completely clear.I was put on a drug to help heal the ulcer and a proton pump inhibitor.I just want to know if it is safe to amitiza.I am on opiods so I need it.

Long story short, am now beginning treatment with Gabapentin ( just started and will gradually increase) and Amitiza,which seems to do nothing. On bad days, I use Tigan or Zofran for nausea. Today, I don't feel so bad but Saturday I was in bed all day horribly sick.i now eat very little and am losing more weight. Connection or not, this all seemed to start after treatment for a tooth infection with Clyndamicin. Oh, I was treated twice for SIBO, felt better and now worse again.

I am on milk of magnesia, amitiza, and dulcolax and my doctor wants me to try to get off the milk of magnesia. You can try using other medications for constipation to see if that works better. Amitiza is a new one out there but sometimes certain ones work better than others. Has your doctor ever mentioned abdominal migraines?

As for the constipation, try taking one capful (the little cup thing that comes with the bottle) of milk of magnesia every day. Talk to your GP about Amitiza, you might be a good canidate for that, as well. Not every constipation problem needs fiber as most people (and some doctors believe)-I did that for years and my problem continued. I laid off the fiber as directed by my gastroenterologist, took the Amitiza & m of m each night and my troubles were over.

Long and twisted colon that tends to slow passage of stool and cause constipation that can be quite severe. I take Miralax and Amitiza for mine. They work, but are expensive - especially the latter.

Thanks and yes...I've had all the tests you mentioned above done. The only ones that showed anything was the CT scan showed a small kidney stone and the gastric emptying scan showed moderate to severe gastroparentsis. I need to work on the multiple smaller meals...I typically try to keep semi-healthy snacks at work and just eat dinner. I do try to eat low-fat...maybe I'm eating fiborous things and don't realize it. We tried amitiza and it did nothing...

Had breast reconstruction over 10 years ago - TRAM flap with abdominal muscle. Digestion issues worsen every year. Physician prescribed Amitiza last year but now have to meet new-year deductible before I can benefit from manufacturer coupon. Symptoms now include increased, painful bloating, no burps, no flatulence and no bowel movement after about 5 days drinking only water. Usually fruit or juice will help but nothing is helping or happening. Suggestions welcome and encouraged.

I have these bloated, distention, nausea, constipation (sometimes) for about 20 years. Colonoscopy and gastroenteroscopyn always show clear and fine. I was prescribed Amitiza 8 mg 2 years ago. This looks like "official" matter. What meds are in question? Colonoscopy showed something? IBS is not a disease at all, and there's no drugs for IBS, as I know (my opinion). Zelnorm was even withdrawn from the (U.S.) market last year, now it might be back again.

Actually, you said right thigh. Mine is in the left thigh. Constipation would tend to cause this in the left thigh more often than the right thigh. You need to have your abdomen examined. You might have a cyst or something over there, pressing on the anterolateral cutaneous nerve.

This is on top of a strong oral medication (Amitiza) and magnesium. With Miralax, I get the stuff in the bottle and take 1 1/2 capfuls once a day and as needed.

I also have colonic inertia and a tortuous colon, but I have small intestine, stomach, and rectal problems too so my case is a little different from yours. For the constipation I have tried Miralax, Milk of Magnesia, Magnesium Citrate, Docusate, Doculax, Senokot, Lactulose, Amitiza, and probably some others that I am forgetting. I am tube fed so my diet doesn't really apply.

I have seen 4 different doctors getting various opinions that range from a regular dr who put me on Amitiza low dose and when that didnt work recommended me to see a gi dr. That GI dr told me "oh its just IBS..nothing we can do for you." Then I went to the city to see a dr at a well known university hospital and they ran a million and one tests on me........... 1.

I have tried everything from high fiber diet, miralax, enemas, and I have been on Amitiza and Sentakot for three days and to no avail. I researched some on the internet and I am concerned that the gastrointestinal issues are from macrocyctic anemia (b-12 or pernicious anemia) from what I can figure from my symptons and blood work. What is the treatment for such? Whom would I see regarding this? What other methods will relieve the constipation? I am very miserable and feel awlful 24/7.
