Avatar f tn Also is taking 400mg of Acyclovir enough for suppressing viral shedding, or is 400mg 2x daily going to suppress viral shedding that much more. What is an estimated percentage of suppressing viral shedding with both aforermentioned doses? Also where is a free/cheap place to get a HSV blood test in California? Haven't been able to get much info/ answers from my doctor. Want to take something to suppress it to lessen the chance of passing it on and symptoms. Thank you.
Avatar n tn The thing with me is that I don't have outbreaks at all. The first and last one I ever had was a year ago after I was first exposed and diagnosed. The sores showed up about a week after I was with this person. Since then, it's almost like I don't even have herpes. I'm just VERY confused about this, and how to explain it my boyfriend. I've read information online that says asymptomatic shedding occurs right before, during, and right after outbreaks.
Avatar m tn We assume the other 2 antivirals, acyclovir and famvir , have similar results. anything you do that reduces shedding of the virus reduces the amount of times a partner is likely to come into contact with active herpes and all 3 herpes antivirals reduce shedding similarly.
Avatar f tn Also, I gave oral sex to my boyfriend last night and he has hsv-2. While I was doing it, my armpits were literally resting on his thighs (the inside of my armpits). What is the likelihood that I have armpit herpes?
Avatar n tn For example, some persons not having symptomatic herpes outbreaks have more asymptomatic viral shedding, when transmission can occur, than others. How long your partner has been infected also makes a difference; if she is within the first few months of catching genital HSV-2, the risk is much higher than later -- and if it has been several years, the risk might be quite low.
Avatar m tn oral herpes viral shedding wouldn't cause prodromal symptoms for weeks. really not likely what is going on is due to your oral herpes infection. when you have the genital symptoms, do they test you for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally? either an ENT specialist or a dermatologist would be appropriate follow up for the oral burning issues. I think I'd go with the dermatologist since they can help figure out what is going on orally as well as genitally both.
Avatar n tn ve been taking Acyclovir for the past several months and it seems to be working great for my oral hsv 1 outbreaks. I was wondering though if anyone knows if viral shedding is also reduced when taking this med as daily suppressive? I'd sure like to be less contagious between obvious outbreaks! Also, I've read that long term use may cause kidney damage and hair loss. Anyone experience any of these side effects?
Avatar f tn What is recommended amt of acyclovir to suppress outbreaks and significantly reduce viral shedding? My dr wants me to take 200mg once per day.
Avatar f tn Thanks for all of your input on this site, Terri! I've been pondering the same issue for many years & would love your input. I have oral HSV-1, since I was in high school--roughly 15 years, confirmed by viral culture & blood test. I am HSV-2 negative. My outbreaks were often severe & crossed vertical & horizontal axis, which I've been told is rare/impossible, i.e. I've had it on the left and right side of my face as well as in my eyes & on my chin & neck.
Avatar f tn I have read on this forum that shedding occurs between outbreaks from anywhere on the body. I was under the belief that any viral shedding is coming from site of the outbreaks and genital area. So my question is where is the shedding occurring all over or the site of the outbreak?
Avatar f tn The thing I ammost interested to know is my chances and percentages of viral shedding and transmitting that way ? Because it seems so weird to never have anything ever again yet I can pass it on .
Avatar m tn Last month a started taking 800mg of acyclovir daily to see if that would reduce my outbreaks and shedding. I have a few questions regarding my situation: 1. If I have an outbreak nearly every month, could it be that my immune system is compromised or could it have no relation to it? I am very healthy, don't smoke, seldomly drink, exercise, etc. 2.
Avatar m tn 3- Is there any quick test which can be done on my own in order to check presence of the virus on the skin (Viral Shedding)? This help detecting those Viral Shedding with no visible sore and thus further reducing the chance of spreading the virus.
Avatar f tn Valtrex is an anti-viral, and it reduces the frequency and/or severity of outbreaks, and also will help suppress the virus from shedding. Acyclovir is another anti-viral as well.
Avatar f tn I have read that acyclovir cuts my risk of spreading it, as it cuts down on shedding. Does it also cut my risk of getting hsv 1 ? Specifically, if he has hsv genitally, can I do oral sex and have low risk of getting in the mouth? He (like me before now) has never had an ob that we know of.
Avatar n tn Your acyclovir dosage is correct the way it is now for suppressive therapy: 400mg 2X day. Taking more does not correlate with being more effective.
Avatar m tn valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. when you swallow it, during digestion the body turns it into acyclovir. because of this unique delivery method, you get more active acyclovir available in the body so you don't have to take it as often.
Avatar n tn Hi - No, nothing cures herpes. Antivirals don't cure it, either. They just help prevent outbreaks and reduce shedding if you take them daily. No studies have been done on any of the things you mentioned and transmission, so we can't say how it works for that, but some say L-lysine and Monolaurin really helps them in reducing the frequency of outbreaks. Others don't, so obviously that varies. Be really leery of anything promising a cure.
Avatar n tn I am 43 years old otherwise healthy male and have had genital herpes for almost 22 years now. When I was diagnosed with this disease in 1986 I was told in a nutshell, no sores - no problem (that is in the absence of ALL the stages associated with the disease of course) and I had no reason to think otherwise that is until yesterday.
