Acyclovir for outbreaks

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir for outbreaks

zovirax

Avatar f tn Grace I would like to know if caffeine is a trigger to a herpes outbreak. The reason why is because I have been drinking coffee for a while I usually don't I had three outbreaks last month. However I have been off acyclovir for a 13 months. I had HSV2 for 4 years and 5 months now my OBGYN said that I shouldn't be experiencing that many outbreaks being that I have had the virus for some time she's saying that is too many outbreaks.
Avatar n tn It's too late for a leision culture but go back because it should've cleared up by now, not continue to keep having recurrences like this back to back even while on acyclovir. Odds are that it's not oral herpes going on after all.
Avatar m tn Last month a started taking 800mg of acyclovir daily to see if that would reduce my outbreaks and shedding. I have a few questions regarding my situation: 1. If I have an outbreak nearly every month, could it be that my immune system is compromised or could it have no relation to it? I am very healthy, don't smoke, seldomly drink, exercise, etc. 2.
Avatar f tn If you just have burning and no obvious lesions then you need to go and be seen by your provider to get it checked out. Also get checked for yeast and bacterial infections too vaginally - they are quite common in us gals. You absolutely do not have to take suppressive therapy for life!!! Most folks only use it for a couple of years - depends on their situatio. It'sdifferent for everyone. As far as cost - without insurance, in the US, you can get acyclovir under $20/month at walmart.
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar f tn s end. My gynecologist is even running a culture for acyclovir-resistance. Could that be the case?
Avatar f tn I have been on Acyclovir once a day 400mg as a preventative for outbreaks for almost 2 years now. It has significantly helped lessen the amount of outbreaks as well as the duration if I do get one. I had to recently switch doctors and this new doctor is not willing to prescribe it to me anymore stating that the FDA has linked Acyclovir to causing cancer after 1 year of use. I can't find anything on FDA website or Google linking long term effects causing cancer.
Avatar f tn Hi All, this is my first post. I had been taking acyclovir successfully for the past six years, for outbreaks about two to three times per year. With all the stress in my life these days, my outbreaks have become much more frequent and for whatever reason, I am now having some unpleasant side effects from acyclovir, like headache (tolerable), weird taste in my mouth and excess salivation, and a heavy feeling in my legs and arms.
632033 tn?1222423034 Is taking the dosages of 800mg twice a day sufficient enough for Acyclovir outbreaks? is it possible to become resistant to Acyclovir if taken at high dosages?
Avatar n tn My initial outbreak was just one painful blister that quickly disappeared with a course of Acyclovir for 5 days. Since then I had some more outbreaks near the top of my penis, which to be honest weren't really that bad and I managed to get rid of them quite fast with Acyclovir. Since I had outbreaks quite often, I was prescribed suppressive treatment of two 200mg Acyclovir tablets per day. Most articles online state that outbreaks typically get less significant and frequent over time.
Avatar n tn I've had herpes for approx 8 years with outbreaks maybe twice a year, but recently my outbreaks are every 3 weeks right before my menstural cycle. The severity of the out break has also increased significantly extremely painful nothing like before. The medication acyclovir doesn.t seem to be helping the out breaks are lasting about 2 weeks to resolve completely. Why is this happening? Is it age related?( i just turned 38) Can it be related to my diet?
Avatar f tn My acyclovir says to take 400mg a day for suppressive and 400mg 2xday for 7days for ob. But she let's me change my script to suit me. Should I up the dosage to 2400mg for 2days for ob & 800 a day for suppressive?????
Avatar f tn You may also want to talk to your doctor about going on valtrex or acyclovir daily to help prevent outbreaks. If you are getting frequent outbreaks, and they take weeks to heal, have your doctor do some testing to make sure you don't have a secondary infection, like yeast or bacterial vaginitis if you are female, or another STD.
Avatar f tn 1000 mg once a day for more than 10 outbreaks per year or 500 mg once a day for those having 9 or less. Doses are taken every day.
Avatar m tn what are the treatments for hsv2/ are they prescribed or can i get them over the counter?
882842 tn?1240600392 I am no longer on a suppressive med although I just found out that Planned Parenthood will prescribe acyclovir for episodic or suppressive. Over the last 2-3 months I have had multiple outbreaks. I did make a lot of changes in my life at the time, but things don't feel to be near as stressful now as they were then and I am still having the recurrences even on daily meds (800 mg/acyclovir).
Avatar m tn I've suffered from multiple outbreaks of oral (Type 1) HSV for years. When I started prophylactic treatment with acyclovir, I saw a reduced occurrence for a few months, then they came back to about 4-5 outbreaks/year. I recently switched prophylactic medication from acyclovir to famciclovir, and had a 18-month period free from outbreak. Come yesterday, I had another terrible outbreak (worse than usual)... will these become more commonplace now? Is this a sign of HSV-resistance to the drug?
Avatar f tn I needed to start taking antidepressants a while back and when I was taking the seration reuptake inhibitors (ie. celexa and lexapro) I started having more frequent outbreaks. I had to stop taking those meds for other reasons, but at the same time the outbreaks eased off. Since then I have started taking over the counter 5htp. This is otherwise known as L-tryptophan and stimulates seratonin production/metabolism. Once again, the herpes is acting up more frequently.
Avatar m tn ve used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks? I have tried 600mg Acyc 3 times a day but it takes 7 days to clear up. Please advise.
Avatar f tn My last outbreak was in September or the beginning of October but it has been a while is that a lot of outbreaks to be experiencing being that I been off the acyclovir for 10 months even though I contracted the virus three years and three months ago.
Avatar f tn have you been to your gyn to get tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally? if not, that's the next step. BV especially has been shown to make herpes more active and about 1/2 of all women who have it, aren't having obvious symptoms to know that they have it which is why proper testing is important. bv is also more common once you go into menopause so it's well worth going to be checked for for that reason also.
