Dose of acyclovir for shingles

Common Questions and Answers about Dose of acyclovir for shingles

zovirax

Avatar f tn Are you sure it was shingles? Where did you break out at? I ask because I thought I had shingles for years... breaking out on my lower back.... turned out it was genital herpes. My first outbreak was when I was 5 months pregnant and confined to the bed because of preterm contractions. Apparently my ex husband was busy while I was confined to the bed... bless his heart. The doctor that found out it was herpes told me that shingles only breaks out one or two times.
Avatar f tn I've on acyclovir for shingles prevention and had a one night stand 14 weeks ago. I had a blood test at the 7 week mark and it was negative. When should I have my next blood test to be sure I'm negative.
Avatar m tn Since the first experience was not that painful when I first saw the rash on my chest I was not 100% sure what it was at first, I did not think at the time shingles moved locations. Because of this I did not take any medicines for a long time (2 weeks after 1st noticed outbreak), unit the shingles started going up my neck. At this point I took acyclovir, forgot what dosage and how often but whatever was recommended from the net. Thanks for you help.
Avatar m tn give your provider a call and ask them to call in the acyclovir instead. You take it more often but it works just as well. The cheaper generic price is far worth the pain of taking it more often. acyclovir is way cheaper than valtrex. did you have a recurrence of shingles that you are on medications again? if so, did they confirm that it's shingles with testing or were these just visual diagnosis of shingles?
Avatar f tn After partying to hard (only drinking & smoking cig) one weekend this past summer, I developed a case of Shingles on the side of my chest. I'm mid 20s in age. Additionally, my Dermatologist prescribed Acyclovir 800mg x5 Daily for 1 week. When I began taking the medication is when things got a little weird. The first 48 hours, I felt amazing !
Avatar m tn I am having a difficult time managing the pain which is severe and yet my primary care doctor prescribed a very small dose of hydrocodone (1 every 6 hours) which at least took the edge off the pain. The prescription is done and he tells me just to take Advil now. I am confused as to why a Dr. would be reluctant to prescribe pain medications for something as painful as this condition? Should I be seeing a specialist of some sort? I have been taking NSAIDS like candy and very little relief.
Avatar m tn After things got worse he was admitted to the ER the rash was easily recognized as a shingles outbreak on the S2-S3 dermatome area. He was then given a course of Acyclovir to take. Now he is having severe bladder spasms/pain, especially at night. My question is this - is the shingles outbreak related to the bladder spasms/pain, or is the most recent BCG course most likely the cause?
Avatar f tn The dose they are giving you is the shingles dose. Ask if you can try the 400mg 3x/day for 5 day dose instead if this is a recurrence of hsv1. Are you also on suppressive therapy - 400mg 2x/day everyday in between or are you just interested in starting that to avoid this from reoccuring so often?
Avatar n tn Yes they prescribed antiviral meds for shingles called Acyclovir (generic for Zovirax). I guess this med is used also though for herpes, from what I read on the pamphlet we received from the pharmacy. So getting a culture at this point will maybe show negative? Is that because it's already passed several days or???
Avatar n tn I am also 23 and I had shingles when I was 19. Its an adult form of the chicken pox and I know it hurts like hell. Unfortunately it will last for a month after you start your meds. You should see another doctor because if in fact you have shingles, it's a virus like the chicken pox, and antibotics won't do anything. You need a viral med. I was prescribed valtrex.
Avatar f tn She first suggested shingles so gave me the acyclovir and also tested for HIV to see if my immune system was compromised- that came back clear. She then said it wasn't shingles because it happens most months and also happens in the exact same place which cold sores would do. She also said menstruation is a common trigger. I find it odd that she hasn't tested me but have started the acyclovir - should I go back and ask for a test?
Avatar n tn I have had shingles for a week now. 10 spots on back, 10 under arm. They seem to be going away slowly. Minor pain in back muscle. I did not take acyclovir. Is it too late to start now? I feel lightheaded all the time, was wondering what was wrong with me.. could it be from the shingles?? Maybe I should start meds. Don't know. Second time I have had it. First time in 1989 was not stressed at all. This time was very stressed.
Avatar n tn I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?
Avatar n tn My urgent care provider prescribed Acyclovir for 7 days and pain medication. I completed the medication for the 7 days. I saw my physician on 8/25 and he told me that it was healing nicely. On 8/27 it felt like it was coming back, so I saw my physician a second time. The evening before, I called the urgent care clinic that I went to on 8/14 and they prescribed Acyclovir a second time for 10 days.
Avatar n tn I ended up getting my first fever blister 7 years ago and started taking Acyclovir for it, so I decided to try it for my glandular problem and it seemed to work. My last doctor said that it could be shingles, not genital herpes because high fever does not accompany genital herpes. I have a new doctor who has not seen it yet because I always try to nip it in the bud. I just take Acyclovir and it seems to do the trick. Can you tell me what it sounds like I have to you?
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar n tn m a regular athlete who just came down with the shingles for the second time in 15 years, this time I got the rash on my left arm, from the wrist up to my shoulder, rash following the nerve path, I sort of knew what it was and started taking 800 mg of Acyclovir four times a day (it was the weekend and wouldn't see a doctor until Monday) I had read about this, My brother in-law M.D.
Avatar f tn one day i went to go check the pills she gave me because i was on birth control and wanted to know if it would affect it so i looked up the name acyclovir to find out it was for the herpes simplex virus....i freaked out and called and asked them why they gave me a pill for herpes if i didn't have that and the nurse on the phone told me that its for more than one thing and that its best not to google things cause it give me false indications.....
Avatar n tn Thank you for all your answers. Please, let me know what is the chance of getting shingles because of stress. I think i had shingles and not HSV 1. I will definitely do swab test if it recurrs.
Avatar f tn There are other medications out there to manage your shingles - have you tried valtrex or acyclovir? There are medications for nerve pain. I think you should speak to your doctor about a plan to get off if you feel you can, there are meds that will help. For me personally, I've lived with chronic pain for years and the fear of how I would feel without the pills was worse than what I am actually experiencing.
Avatar f tn The doctor thought it might be shingles or a herpes outbreak! She put me on 800 mg of Acyclovir 5 times a day. I have had 9 doses and it seems to be getting worse not better. I have had bumps come up and form blisters within just a few hours today. HELP!!! I have been around about 100 kids under 5 over the past month and at least 2 of them have been diagnosed with chicken pox, which I had as a child and I had the shot... Could this be herpes or is there another explanation?
Avatar n tn There's a vaccine out now for shingles. I have a prescription from the doctor, and the vaccine is commonly given at grocery store and drug store pharmacies. We should all be getting it to avoid shingles. I hope I don't procrastinate until I get them. By the way, the doctor gave my husband a prescription for the vaccine, too, and he had the shingles a few years ago.
Avatar m tn How did they diagnose you as having shingles? Are you taking acyclovir 800mg 5x/day for it? Have you had shingles before?
