Acyclovir dosage for meningitis

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir dosage for meningitis

zovirax

Avatar f tn It is my understanding that Mollarets and recurrent lymphocytic meningitis(my diagnosis for lack of a better one) are interchangeable diagnoses. Acyclovir is also for Herpes meningitis (70% recurrent meningitis is Herpes). My spinal fluid always comes back negative for Herpes, but I was on acyclovir anyway for quite awhile just to try anything and still the meningitis came back. This has been going on for 6 years now,so it is maybe auto immune. anyone with any other ideasto share?
Avatar n tn Acyclovir is always 2x/day for suppressive therapy. You can not take acyclovir just 800mg 1x/day. It's not effective that way. Call your provider up and question that dose. If they say that that dose works too -ask them to please cite the research that backs that. I guarantee you they can't provide any that shows that 800mg once a day is effective for acyclovir!! do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? How about orally - which one?
Avatar m tn ve only had oral outbreaks so far, i asked the doctor for acyclovir and he gave me a prescription for 800mg tablets and to take them 2x daily for a total dose of 1600mg everyday as supressive therapy. i'm concerned this is too high a dose? i thought it should be 400mg and take 2x daily for a total dose of 800mg? it was an ER doctor that gave it to me because i don't have health insurance and went to the county hospital.
Avatar f tn My acyclovir says to take 400mg a day for suppressive and 400mg 2xday for 7days for ob. But she let's me change my script to suit me. Should I up the dosage to 2400mg for 2days for ob & 800 a day for suppressive?????
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar m tn My doctor has perscribed 200mg taken 3 times per day - and has indicated that this is a strong enough dosage for me. My question still remains, is a dosage of 200mg taken 2 times per day effective? I have a strong adversion to taking meds of any kind. I get dizzy, light headed, tired, cranky and can taste metal in my mouth.
Avatar n tn does recurrent hsv 2 infections also trigger radiculitis or sacral neuropathy or menigitis? what is the likelihood of developing hsv encephalitis or meningitis during recurrent attacks? is the neurologic manifestations exclusive only during the primary infection? does taking anti-virals (acyclovir, valacyclovir) decrease the neuropathic complications or no effect at all?
Avatar n tn Your acyclovir dosage is correct the way it is now for suppressive therapy: 400mg 2X day. Taking more does not correlate with being more effective.
Avatar m tn That same day I tripled my dosage of Acyclovir as I had read that for an episodic occurance it can be taken 3 times a day for two days for an outbreak. Would this new outbreak be caused by me not taken the dosage first prescribed by my Dr or is it possible to still have an outbreak while on a daily supresser?
Avatar f tn m a healthy 24 year old female who has been suffering from this since Spring 2007 (came down with meningitis 3x in 3 months - acyclovir and Valtrex treatments did not work and resulted in renal failure). All 3 times, my spinal tap came back positive for HSV II. I am currently (and have been since August 2007) taking 500mg of Famciclovir per day. For the first year, I took 500mg 3x per day. The second year I reduced it to 500mg 2x per day because it was really hard on my body.
Avatar f tn I called the ID doc and the nurse confirmed my HSV-2 test was positive. They direct admitted me for IV acyclovir and pain management. The only thing that helped the pain was dilaudid and solu medrol. I got a PICC line and went home for 14 days of IV acyclovir every 8 hours. I'm still tired, but feeling better and trying to wrap my head around all of this. I've never had an outbreak. Even with the meningitis I didn't have any sores.
Avatar f tn I have been taking different doses of Acyclovir over the past 2 months to get control of the virus and it gets better but does not go away completely. Should I switch meds? Would it be harmful to just increase the dosage of Acyclovir for a longer period as it's recommended for just 10 days.
Avatar m tn you can price the difference at your local pharmacy. the dose for suppressive therapy with acyclovir is 400mg twice a day every single day.
Avatar m tn Hi, I have been taking acyclovir 400mg tablets 2x daily for 2 years now and along with several lifestyle changes (which includes almost no alcohol and good sleeping pattern) I have had pretty much success in suppressing my yearly OBs from 6-8 outbreaks a year to none noticeable outbreaks at all.
Avatar m tn exactly how long is "awhile now"? really, if it's been less than a year, it's completely normal. you have to be patient and wait for the virus to run it's course and continue to follow up on treatments for new symptoms. correct, some old research on cimetidine. it was helpful for about 30% of folks when taken 5x/day for several months if I'm recalling properly.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your reply. The doctor who gave the final (so far) diagnosis to me was an infectious disease specialist. However, he said some things that I know aren't correct, like "50% of the population has HSV2" and "you didn't necessarily get this from having sex." And, as I mentioned, both the specialists and the hospital residents made an early uninformed decision that this must be herpes and then variously tried to prove it.
Avatar m tn I am advised now to increase acyclovir dosage to 3 times a day and have levamisole hydrochloride 75 gms twice a week for another 3 months and check for HSV1 igg again. Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.

Avatar n tn when my daughter was 13 she had bacterial spinal meningitis. she is 29 and has been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. could her tn be from the meningitis? maybe a sid effect?? she is on very strong medication and can not have the dosage increased anymore. she suffers alot with extreme pain. thank you, i need to find out as much as i can about this disease.
Avatar m tn The recommended dosage for the last weeks of pregnancy is not specified in the handbook :(
Avatar m tn Hi all. I have had herpes 2 in my genitals for two years now and my girlfriend recently went to the gynecologist and asked about risks associated with having sex with me, etc. She mentioned that I experience between 8 and 10 outbreaks per year and her gynecologist suggested that I may have another underlying condition, infection perhaps that results in so many outbreaks. Last month a started taking 800mg of acyclovir daily to see if that would reduce my outbreaks and shedding.
Avatar m tn However, fungal meningitis is rare in patients who do not have HIV/AIDS, it can occur but represents a small minority of cases and even then there is usually some other cause of immunosuppression in these people such as chronic alcholism, chemotherapy for cancer, organ transplant with immunosuppression, etc....Fungal meningitis in a non-immunosuppressed person is uncommon. Have you had a lumbar puncture yet? That should give you more answers.
Avatar n tn There is no pain in my neck or any where else. Therapy has not helped. Am taking 800-1200 mg of Advil and 800 mg of Acyclovir daily, plus Alcum for pain at night. All the doctors so far have said it happens with shingles but not genital or simplex herpes.
