After taking acyclovir for 1 week my test result for hsv1 is 0.66 which is negative but hsv2 is 1.
had what appeared to be two bug bites on buttocks, that joined together and formed many vesicles. Acyclovir was begun the 2nd day(1600 to 1200 mg per day) for 12 days. The vesicles never fully developed and over 3 weeks the lesion subsided. No test was done. Two days ago a bug bite appeared on the lower abdomen, above pubic area. It is red and has one blister in the center and is sore. Perhaps more vesicles will develop. . No acyclovir this time.
She said it was possible I have herpes but she not sure so she gave me Acyclovir 400mg for pain. I took it for two days and it doesnt burn when I pee now. Does this mean I have herpes? SN: I have had two boils before after having rough sex.

no, you aren't going to get ribavirin to treat herpes. it also doesn't cure herpes. acyclovir works much better, much cheaper and has less side effects and long term risks.
Hi. I've been taking Acyclovir for the past several months and it seems to be working great for my oral hsv 1 outbreaks. I was wondering though if anyone knows if viral shedding is also reduced when taking this med as daily suppressive? I'd sure like to be less contagious between obvious outbreaks!
Also, I've read that long term use may cause kidney damage and hair loss. Anyone experience any of these side effects?
He currently uses LomaBrit cream which alleviates the symptoms but only momentarily. Is this a common problem? He has been to see doctors but all they say is it's the herpes. He has used thrush creams but his penis reacts to them badly; the tip swells up and gets red.He has also taken oral thrush medication but this doesn't help either. I'm at a loss. I do not suffer the same symptoms apart from HSV outbreaks and thrush.

I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
Does Acyclovir make anyone else feel completely terrible? I get terrible headaches, dizzy, diarrhea and feel just awful. im not sure which is worse sometimes.

From October 2007 until May 10, 2008, we had unprotected sex in the area of 20 times.5 Days after my last contact, I tested with Labcorp for HSV 1 & 2. I had small bumps on the shaft of my penis and scrotum, which my doctor initally determined as HPV and froze. Test results - neg <0.90 for HSV1 and pos 1.17 for HSV 2 using the CAPTIA ELISA IgG test.
The side effects are too severe to continue on Valtrex. Dr. said to try acyclovir, but research shows it has the same ingredients only in lower milligram strength. Has anyone, who couldn't tolerate Valtrex, have success with acyclovir?
At this point I recommend stopping the acyclovir and going to be seen the next time you have symptoms. if they see symptoms, they can culture them for herpes . I'd try following up with a neurologist also.
Acyclovir is always 2x/day for suppressive therapy. You can not take acyclovir just 800mg 1x/day. It's not effective that way. Call your provider up and question that dose. If they say that that dose works too -ask them to please cite the research that backs that. I guarantee you they can't provide any that shows that 800mg once a day is effective for acyclovir!!
do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? How about orally - which one?
Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does.

acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
